Chapter 48: What Was in the Library
“I thought I was going to die…”
“You would have if I wasn’t here.”
Inside the cocoon-like darkness that Hecate created, I let out a sigh of relief.
At the moment of the explosion, whatever was preventing me from using magic must have been destroyed. Hecate used a significant amount of magic power to appear in the real world and activated her magic just before I hit the ground.
Thanks to her, I’m somehow still alive.
However, it seemed that even for Hecate, appearing in the real world without my will as her contractor was a huge strain, and for the first time, she looked tired.
“Sigh… I haven’t felt this exhausted in a long time… So, what were you thinking, my Contractor? Do you have a death wish?”
As she dispelled her magic, Hecate gave me a sharp look.
I averted my eyes, trying to come up with a feeble excuse.
“Well, I couldn’t think of any other way to avoid getting caught…”
“Even so! If you die, I’ll have to go back to that unbearably boring world! And Leticia would be sad too, wouldn’t she?”
“Ugh…”
I never expected Hecate to hit me with such an irrefutable argument…
—Has her personality changed because she’s tired?
“Isn’t that a bit rude!? I can be sensible too… I mean, I am a sensible person! Well, I’m not a person, but still.”
“I’d love to debate if you’ve ever been sensible, but can I ask something first?”
I looked around as I spoke.
Looking up, I saw a hole in the ceiling where everything had been blown away by the explosion.
Through the hole, I could see a murky blue sky, partially obscured by something semi-transparent… and a crowd of people peering down at us.
I pointed up and muttered.
“Was this place underground?”
“…Yeah, it seems so.”
Hecate’s hesitant nod made me bury my head in my hands.
I’ve completely messed up…
I hope there aren’t any casualties among the civilians…?
I didn’t feel any sympathy or worry for the soldiers swinging swords at me, but if I killed innocent civilians, I’d feel terrible.
The guilt might just kill me.
“…I’ll make sure to check the location properly next time. Yeah, let’s do that.”
“Though it’s a bit late for that.”
“S-shut uuuuuuuuup!! I don’t want to hear that kind of brutal honesty!”
“That means you already admit it…”
Hecate sighed softly and tapped my shoulder.
I slowly removed my hands from my ears and asked her,
“…What is it? I can’t handle any more harsh truths.”
“I think you should be concerned about—
Hecate pointed to a dimly lit corner.
“—him.”
I followed her gaze to where she was pointing.
There…
“—Hey there, current Proxy.” [TLN: Changed agent to proxy]
“I’m gonna kill you! Prepare yourself, you bastard!!”
The same shopkeeper who tricked me into buying the earrings and teleported me here was sitting there, wrapped in chains.
“…Why can’t I land a single hit on you? You damn cheater.”
“Coming from you, who’s contracted with Hecate, that’s rich…”
“Hey, Hecate. Is there any way to land a hit on this guy?”
I had tried hitting him multiple times, but some sort of invisible barrier blocked all my attacks.
Desperate to land even one punch, I asked Hecate.
Surprisingly, she shook her head.
“It’s impossible. No matter how strong you are, you can’t attack this kind-hearted Spirit God of Light.”
“What? He’s a Spirit God like you? No wonder… Wait. Did you just say he’s a Spirit God like you?”
I couldn’t believe my ears and asked Hecate again.
Did she just call this idiot shopkeeper a spirit god?
And a kind-hearted one at that?
“You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m going to kill you.”
“Wait, wait, my Contractor!”
“What? If you try to stop me, I’ll break our contract.”
“Please don’t! You seem like you could actually break it on your own, and that scares me!”
Got it? Don’t push your luck too far. I have a hardcore player who knows this world inside out, and even if not, there are plenty of people who know the game well enough to understand.
As I was having this exchange with Hecate, the shopkeeper, now revealed as the Spirit God of Light, muttered.
“Haha, it’s the first time I’ve seen Hecate being pushed around like this…”
“Isn’t she supposed to be the one doing the pushing around?”
“Contractor!!”
“Well… actually, Hecate usually teases others. The previous proxy was constantly at her mercy…”
Hearing the Spirit God of Light’s words, which sounded somewhat amused, my eyes widened in surprise.
“To be teased by Hecate… How empty-headed was this previous proxy!?”
“You’re really rude, my Contractor!!”
