Chapter 43: Spirits are Scary
“—Oh, welcome back, my Contractor!”
“…What is going on here?”
I asked reluctantly, looking around at everyone in the hall who were tied up by black vine-like things, and Hecate, who was waving with a smile while using the man who was supposed to be the chancellor as a chair.
Hecate looked down at the chancellor-turned-chair for a moment before replying with a smile.
“He had the same creepy magic as what was in Leticia’s head, so I’m doing this.”
“…That creepy magic, do you mean Leticia’s brainwashing?”
“Yes. That magic has properties that spirits hate. Probably because of this, Leticia’s power was limited until now.”
“Let’s forget the second part for now… I’m just glad it’s been undone.”
I sighed in relief, feeling a weight lift off my chest.
“—Alto!!”
Suddenly, Leticia hugged me tightly.
I braced myself to avoid falling over, but for some reason, she started patting my head.
“Um, Leticia?”
“It must have been hard for you… You did what I couldn’t, right…? I’m sorry…”
So, she figured it all out.
Wait…?
How…? I hid it perfectly—oh, was it Hecate?
“T-That’s not true! I was just as surprised!”
I glanced at Hecate with suspicious eyes, but it seemed she wasn’t involved. Then, how did she find out?
No, more importantly…
I asked Leticia to step back a bit and crouched down to make eye contact with the chancellor, who was completely immobilized by Hecate’s magic.
“Well then… are you the last spy? Sorry, but… I’ve already dealt with all the spies in this country.”
“…!?”
“Oh, right, I forgot I had his mouth sealed because he was so noisy.”
“—Pwah!? What are you talking about…? Stop making false accusations! And get this spirit off me! She’s your spirit, right?!”
With a snap of Hecate’s fingers, the magic sealing the chancellor’s mouth was released, and he started spewing excuses and demands.
Despite his arrogant tone, his face clearly showed unmistakable anxiety, revealing his guilt.
“No way.”
“W-What—I’m the chancellor of this country!”
“Yeah, right… Who in their right mind listens to a spy? The moment Hecate, the Spirit God, sensed the same kind of brainwashing magic on Leticia, you were confirmed as a spy. Or are you saying the Spirit God is lying?”
“T-That’s right! Even if she’s a Spirit God, she’s just a rebel under your command—”
“—Oh dear, that’s something I can’t overlook.”
The hall was suddenly overwhelmed by an immense pressure.
At the same time, the black vines that were restraining everyone started moving as if they had come to life. More vines sprouted from the shadows.
Hecate, the one responsible for this, kept smiling but directed her cold eyes at the chancellor, stepping on his head.
The chancellor’s face smashed into the ground, causing him to groan in pain as blood flowed from his nose and forehead, and several of his teeth were knocked out.
“Gaaah… W-what are you doing…?!”
“You don’t get it, do you? To us spirits, you humans are just interesting little toys. Whether a human has ‘aptitude’ is just about whether a spirit likes that human as a toy. Some, like that wolf (Fenrir) or me, might adore their contractor, but that’s rare. That’s why you humans pray to us when you want to use magic, right? Asking us to let you use it? And even contracts—humans can’t break them, but spirits can if they don’t like their contractor. The word ‘contract’ itself might be wrong. From our perspective, it’s more like ‘ownership.’ So, don’t ever call a spirit a slave, okay? Oh, I know! I’ll punish you.”
Hecate’s tone was bright, but her words were anything but.
“—[In the name of the Spirit God of Darkness, I hereby annul your contract with the spirits. Furthermore, I curse you to never be able to form a contract with any spirit again]—”
As Hecate spoke, an immense amount of magic power flowed from her body, forming countless chains that pierced into the chancellor, absorbing into him.
“Alright, now you can’t use magic or make any contracts with spirits ever again. You can regret your mistakes as much as you like.”
“T-That’s impossible…[Fire Tornado]!! [Fire Arrow]!! This can’t be… why won’t my magic work…?!”
The chancellor tried to cast spells, but nothing happened. He couldn’t even feel any magic power.
“It’s pointless. Your spirit is gone, and the curse has sealed your magic power. You can’t do anything.”
This is all too scary. Everyone around looks horrified.
But… if you think about it, it makes sense that spirits would need to do something like this for their own benefit.
I really need to have a serious talk with Hecate about our future together.
Depending on that, we might need to part ways.
“Don’t look at me like that, my Contractor! I don’t think of you as a toy, and I would never use this curse on you!”
“Just the fact that you considered the first option is enough. Let’s annul the contract.”
“You can’t annul it yourself.”
“Then I’ll never call you again.”
Well, setting that aside…
“So, how about now? Ready to talk?”
“…N-No… w-w-way…”
Uh… he seems to be having a mental breakdown.
But then again, being without magic in this world is a pretty dire situation, so maybe it’s understandable.
Alright, time to pass this problem on.
“Uh, Your Majesty, can you stop pretending to be unconscious and deal with this guy?”
“…We’ll have a lot… really a lot to talk about later.”
“Funny, I also have a lot to discuss. How about the three of us have a nice, long talk?”
“Haha… hahaha…”
When I smiled at the king, he gave a hollow, lifeless laugh.
