- Chapter 43- Don\'t mess things up
Kaori was feeling a little odd, sitting in the classroom.
Today was Thursday and most of the students had already settled on their seats. The homeroom teacher has already taken attendance and informed the absence of three students.
Miyuki, Hiroto, and Yuichi, all three were absent. Additionally, Kaori heard from her friend that even the council president, Ikeda Minami was also absent today even though her sister came.
For some reason, Kaori had a bad feeling about this. When she called Yuichi in the morning, he never responded. All she received half an hour ago, was a simple text; stating:
[Let’s meet after school. My place.]
Kaori has visited Yuichi’s apartment before. Most of the time it was when Hiroto was around and sometimes Kaori was alone with Yuichi at his place. That’s why she wasn’t surprised reading the message.
However, she was a little scared to meet him today. Not like she suspected that Yuichi would do something to her. Far from it.
Kaori trusts Yuichi more than anyone else, as such, she knows that he would never do anything intentionally to make her cry.
….however, that ‘intentionally’ was her reason for concern.
What if something had occurred, which Yuichi didn’t intend to do…yet now, it was going to affect her relationship with him?
‘I hope I am just overthinking this…’

[Yuichi’s POV:]
“So? Did she reply?” Hearing Hiroto’s query, I showed him my chat box with Kaori.
She just said ‘Okay’ in response, which was a concern in itself.
“Hmm…”
Hearing his hum, I asked, “…do you think she knows something?”
It was stupid of me to think that Kaori knew about what I had done last night at Minami-san’s place, but seeing Hiroto not denying my words got me anxious.
“A woman’s institution is dangerous, you know.” Gulping in nervousness I asked him,
“You mean…she already knows something has happened?”
Last night, I slept with Minami-san despite not being in a relationship with her. This was something that goes against my principles yet last night it felt like I had lost all my reasoning.
In the morning I told her that I would contact her once I collected my thoughts. And since Minami-san seemed a little too happy in the morning, she didn’t object.
Leaving her house, the first person I searched for was Hiroto…and for some reason, he also didn’t go to school today.
“So, what are you going to do, Yu? Just tell me whatever comes to your mind first, and then I will give you advice accordingly.”
Hiroto hooked the finger with the coffee mug handle before sipping on the coffee as he asked.
Since we were in a cafe, I leaned slightly forward before answering,
“After what happened between me and Minami-san, I couldn’t just pretend to be nobody to her. However, being in a relationship with Kaori makes me feel like I have cheated on her….and keeping things secret from her also feels like I would be betraying her trust….but then again, I don’t want to hurt Kaori as well-”
My words came to a sudden halt as I looked at Hiroto in mid-sentence and found his eyes drawn toward his phone as he smilingly chatted with someone.
*Bam*
“Hear me out, will ya!”
I slammed my hand in frustration, but it didn’t affect him…rather the people around us turned their heads in my direction.
“I-I am sorry for the display.” Bowing to them, I settled down my seat with a heavy sigh leaving my lips.
“Had enough or want to vent more?”
Hearing Hiroto’s words, I realized that he never stopped listening to me but just didn’t find it important to keep his focus on me.
I couldn’t help chuckling at his behavior. In my life, there have been very few people who treated me not like anything else but just a regular friend. And when I say ‘very few’ then there is only this guy sitting across from me.
“I had enough. So…can you tell me what should I do?”
I feel like I am just trying to burden Hiroto with all my worries and couldn’t decide anything by myself recently. However, after Hiroto had started dating Shirogane-san, there has been a sudden change in him.
He seems more responsible and reliable.
‘I wonder if people change this much once they fall in love…’
Throwing away my needless thoughts, I focused on what Hiroto was about to say,
“From what I summarized, you can’t abandon Minami or Kaori, right?”
Although it was sudden for me, I nodded in assent.
Hiroto sighed before asking, “Let’s say, Minami…did you use protection?”
“…!”
It took me a moment to register his words, but when I did, my face heated up a little.
“Damn…how can you say something like that, with a straight face?” I thought I had enough experience in life to not stutter about these topics. However, looking at Hiroto’s indifference, even I was taken aback.
Hearing my words, Hiroto grinned before he suggested, “You know, this is the most sophisticated way of asking this. Want to hear how direct and vulgar I can be.”
“Yes…I did use protection.”
I answered him truthfully. Although sharing personal things like these was not something I prefer, if it was Hiroto I think I could trust him. And since it was me who came seeking his help, I couldn’t just not answer him.
Hiroto leaned back in his seat with his arms crossed before he advised,
“I think you should first confess everything to Kaori. How and why you ended up in Minami’s bed. Don’t hide anything and don’t add anything. Just be truthful. If she slaps you or even leaves you, don’t panic. ”
“Bu-”
“First listen to me.” I nodded with complicated emotions swirling in my head as he continued.
“If you are serious about not hurting Kaori then you should tell everything to her first. If she gets to know about this from someone else…”
With his eyes turning sharp he concluded, “…she will never be able to trust you again.”
*Gulp*
Not many times I have felt anxious, as much as I was feeling right now. The mere thought of witnessing Kaori’s saddened look makes me feel troubled.
I took my time, before responding to Hiroto in a sincere voice, “I understand. I will tell her everything.”
Hiroto nodded at that as he said, “Good…now about Minami…hmm, let me handle her.”
I blinked in confusion before asking, “Hmm? What are you going to do?”
Hiroto stood up and left some words of advice behind,
“Don’t mess things up, Yuichi. ”
Although Hiroto said that, I knew, not everything was going to turn out fine.
*Sigh*
