Chapter 7: A Captive Life Starting from Zero Trust
Life in captivity was surprisingly comfortable.
If you just abandoned human dignity, you got food without doing anything, no need to clean up, someone else handled chores and laundry, you could lie around all day, and there was always someone to talk to.
There was even a surveillance camera, so security was covered!
Truly, it could be called paradise.
—If you just abandoned human dignity.
In other words, it was, to put it mildly, the worst. Being restrained meant I couldn’t move freely, I always had to be accompanied to the bathroom or bath, and the strict surveillance left no time to relax.
By the way, there was always someone in the shed. They seemed to have a three-shift rotation, with the three girls taking turns.
So, there was never a moment alone. Someone was always on duty. Was this a part-time job or something?
After three days of this, I started to feel anxious.
—What if I’m stuck in captivity for life?
At first, I thought it was a joke. Imprisonment was just a childish game, like a sleepover.
I figured they’d let me go after a day or two, once their anger cooled.
But there was no sign of release.
There was even a poster on the wall titled “Akira Akiyoshi’s Weekly Routine,” and the shift schedule next to it had names filled in until the end of the month.
This meant the lifestyle wasn’t ending anytime soon.
Even now, outside the shed, Mahiru and Toa were arguing about next month’s schedule.
“Mahiru-chan, you’ve got way too many night shifts! That’s totally unfair!”
“Hmph, letting anyone but family take the night shift is dangerous. As your sister, I’d never allow it.”
“But mornings just don’t have that vibe, you know? We’re too sleepy to talk properly, and that’s such a disadvantage!”
“I don’t care.”
“Ugh, Mahiru-chan, you’re so stingy!”
I could easily picture Toa puffing out her cheeks anxiously. The shed’s walls were that thin.
“You can hear everything outside, huh?” Satori said with a smile.
It was her shift now, so she was watching me in the shed, but even in this situation, her hand kept moving, probably writing her next story.
Being diligent was fine, but I wished she’d show a bit more urgency. If we could hear them clearly, they could hear us just as well.
In other words, there was no privacy in this shed. I wished they’d respect my human rights a bit more.
My complaints must have shown on my face because Satori pouted and asked, “What’s got you so dissatisfied? There’s a light, the pillow’s fluffy, and there’s a fan. You have to go to the shrine for the bath and toilet, but that means you get fresh air. There’s food, and only your left foot is handcuffed, so you can draw endlessly. No matter how you look at it, it’s an ideal setup.”
Sure, it wasn’t as restrictive as the word “imprisonment” suggested, and it might even be decent compared to other captivity situations.
But there was a fatal problem that no amount of freedom could fix.
“It’s… hot,” I said.
“Huh?”
“It’s so hot I’m gonna die.”
I shouted with all my strength.
Yeah, the heat was driving me crazy. The window didn’t open, so there was no ventilation, and despite the great sunlight, it turned into a scorching hell during the day. No matter how much I wiped, the sweat wouldn’t stop.
“There’s a fan, you know?” Satori said.
“Don’t underestimate a Japanese summer! A fan’s not gonna cut it! I need an AC—an air conditioner. I can’t survive without one!”
I shouted my frustrations at Satori, who tilted her head curiously.
“I’m gonna die of heatstroke!”
“Wanna… kiss?”
“I didn’t say that! Anyway, I want an AC!”
It was a reasonable demand. It’s the captor’s job to ensure a decent captivity environment.
But since this island lacked all the necessary things…
“What’s not here isn’t here,” Satori said.
“Come on, do something…”
No amount of begging would change that.
“Look, you’re hot too, right, Satori? You’re sweating a lot.”
Having taken off her miko outfit and wearing a rare dress, she was clearly struggling with the heat too, her clothes clinging to her body.
The outline of her figure was visible, and as I tried to swallow, I realized my mouth was too dry.
“Water… please,” I said.
“Here you go.”
She handed me a 2-liter plastic bottle, and I chugged it down greedily. My body felt instantly hydrated, like I’d ascended to heaven.
“Give me some water too,” Satori said.
Before I could agree, she snatched the bottle and drank from the same spot I had, gulping it down.
Then she licked her lips, her face turning red with embarrassment as she mumbled, “Indirect kiss.”
“Y-yeah,” I said.
“Don’t look at me; it’s embarrassing.”
“If it’s embarrassing, don’t do it in the first place!”
Her actions made me feel embarrassed too. She was so blunt yet surprisingly bold, and bold yet shy.
As we stared at each other, the air grew awkward.
“Anyway, it’s too hot, so please, do something about this,” I said, forcing the topic back.
I couldn’t keep dealing with Satori. I had to escape this situation somehow…
“Got it. How about we move the captivity location?” she suggested.
“Move it?”
“Yeah, like a relocation. How about my house? The shrine’s inconvenient, but my place has an AC and should be comfortable. Sound good? Let’s do it!”
Ideally, I’d want to be freed from captivity right now, but that seemed unlikely, so this was a compromise.
No sweating, and a house would be more convenient—a win-win proposal, I thought.
But Satori shook her head.
“No way. Your house wouldn’t count as captivity.”
“Is there really a reason a house can’t work?”
“No, this is about reflection. It’s an opportunity for you to reflect on breaking your promise. That’s what this imprisonment is for.”
“Aren’t you misunderstanding the meaning of imprisonment?”
It sounded more like a prison sentence or something.
Did I really do anything that bad?
“It’s fine. It’s got the vibe of imprisonment too. Unless you swear to the gods you won’t leave the island, we’re absolutely not letting you out.”
“…Got it.”
“Absolutely, okay?”
No need to emphasize it—I got it.
Because the person who owned the surveillance camera on the ceiling of this room was none other than Satori.
She was the main reason I couldn’t escape even if I saw an opening.
“—Absolutely.”
“………………I’m absolutely not letting you escape.”
