Chapter 51: If Only It Were a Dream
“Akira’s the one at fault here.”
“…………Huh?”
“It’s Akira’s fault.”
“…W-Why is Satori here…”
That happened in the middle of the night.
I was sleeping in the bed of a business hotel when I suddenly felt something off inside the covers. Something was wriggling around in there.
Had Mahiru snuck into the bed again?
The moment that thought crossed my mind, I realized something was wrong. This wasn’t home. It was a business hotel.
Mahiru and I were staying in separate rooms, so no matter how sneaky she was, she couldn’t have gotten in.
So what was causing this shaking?
Puzzled, I rubbed my eyes and lifted the covers.
And there she was――
“Whoa!?”
It was Satori.
Her silver hair framed emerald eyes. Dressed in the hotel’s nightwear, she had been hiding under the covers, straddling my body.
“It’s Akira’s fault, Akira.”
Her slender fingertips slowly stroked my cheek.
They felt cold, yet somehow they carried a heat that spread gradually through my skin.
This wasn’t good if it kept going!
With that thought, I tried to scramble away on instinct.
But my hands seemed handcuffed in place, and no matter how hard I struggled, they wouldn’t budge an inch.
“W-Why is Satori here…”
“Because it’s Akira’s fault?”
“No, that’s not what I…”
Even if the person in the hat had been Satori, and even if she was staying at the same hotel, that would still make some sense.
We might have crossed paths by chance in the hotel hallway or run into each other in the elevator.
I could accept that kind of situation, but the problem was that she had boldly broken into my room.
“It’s Akira’s fault.”
It made absolutely no sense at all. Even if it was that Satori, there was no way she could break into a room.
Because…
“I locked the door, didn’t I…”
“Any lock can be undone with a master key, right?”
“A master key!? How would Satori even have something like that…”
As I sat there confused, Satori answered my question in a tone that made it sound like the most obvious thing in the world.
“Because this hotel belongs to the Jindaiji family, you know?”
“No, no, no way…”
Sure, the hotel’s name was Jindaiji Hotel. I wouldn’t deny that it had an unsettling ring to it. I hadn’t wanted to stay here if I could help it.
But I had no choice.
What I really wanted was a room at some big chain like A◯ Hotel or Toyoko ◯n. Unfortunately, every one of them was fully booked, and this was the only place with an opening.
“You’re joking, right?”
“I’m not joking.”
“Please tell me you’re joking…”
I’d finally escaped the island, or so I thought, only to end up imprisoned in a business hotel. I never saw that coming.
“Besides,”
I let out a bit of common sense amid my inner despair.
“You can’t use a business hotel for something like imprisonment.”
“It’s fine. Pets aren’t allowed, but imprisonment is okay.”
“No way that’s true…”
I couldn’t believe it right away.
But in reality, my fate already seemed sealed.
――Imprisoned in a hotel near Kochi Station
That was me now. If the Jindaiji family really ran this hotel, no one would come to rescue me.
They’d probably even arrange a shuttle bus back to the island.
In short, the moment Satori caught me, I was done for.
“It’s Akira’s fault. It’s Akira’s fault.”
She slowly unbuttoned the front of my shirt and slipped off my nightwear.
Once my bare skin was exposed, Satori trailed her fingers across my chest.
A jolt like electricity shot through me as she leaned in close, her face inches from mine.
“Akira needs punishment for escaping the island.”
Her words came with a warm breath that tickled my skin, leaving me itchy and helpless, unable to flee or push her away….
I could do nothing but watch, powerless, as Satori dismantled my dignity.
“Waaaaaaaaaaah! Aaaaaaaaah!”
I bolted upright with a jolt.
When I opened my eyes, I was in a hotel room. A plain business hotel room. The ceiling looked just like it had the night before.
“Hah――”
I glanced around, but there was no sign of anyone else.
No Satori, no handcuffs, no disheveled clothes. Everything was back to normal.
No, not exactly back to normal.
“…A dream.”
It must have all been a dream. I’d been sweating over thoughts of Satori too much, and it had turned into a nightmare.
Which meant my supposedly shattered dignity was intact after all.
“No, really?”
Dignity was another word for my mental state, so it didn’t matter if it was physical or not.
In other words, even in a dream, it could be broken if someone tried hard enough, so calling it “intact” felt like a stretch.
“That Satori… she even destroys my dignity in dreams.”
I had to hand it to one of the three great families. Her skills there were undeniable; I had to respect them, fair and square.
“Still, I wonder if the two of them are okay.”
Mahiru and Toa were sharing a room.
I had a single, and they had a twin. We’d argued quite a bit about the room assignments last night, but let’s set that aside for now.
I worried that Satori might have gotten to them.
Unable to sit still any longer, I ignored my messy bedhead and pressed the chime on the door to the next room over.
But there was no answer.
“…Still asleep, huh.”
It felt rude to keep buzzing the chime and wake them up. They’d traveled a long way yesterday and must be exhausted.
Yawning, I headed back to my room. As I started to undress for a shower,
“…………Huh?”
I caught a strange glimpse of my upper body in the mirror. The skin around my chest looked unnaturally red, spotted like a rash.
“Did a bug bite me or something?”
That had to be it. Bugs were everywhere in the summer.
“Should I grab some bug spray?”
The thought crossed my mind for a second, but then I remembered we’d be traveling all day again. I probably wouldn’t be outside much.
What I really needed was the stamina to handle a long trip, not bug spray.
“Guess I’ll catch some more sleep.”
It was five in the morning. I could nap for another two hours without issue.
I climbed back into bed and pulled the covers up over my face this time, to keep any bugs away, and drifted off to sleep.
