Chapter 13.1: I Got Tempted on the Bed by a Scheming Junior
Toa lived in the island’s only children’s home. She had grown up in an environment without parents and had been there since she could remember, so it was like her real home.
“That building is pretty rundown, so I’m worried the wind might blow it away. Just the other day, the leaks were terrible…”
“That’s concerning.”
I said that, but in the original story, there was no information about the place where she lived suffering any damage.
In the Toa route, you had already escaped the island by that point anyway. The typhoon event did not occur in her route. So even if I wanted to do something, it probably would not cause any problems.
However, that did not erase her anxiety. Logic and emotions were separate things.
So I decided to head there right away. Fortunately, the rain was not that strong yet; it was just a light drizzle at most. Getting a little wet was no issue.
The only problem was…
“Sharing an umbrella with Senpai… it kind of feels like we’re a couple, doesn’t it?”
“We’re not, though.”
That there was only one umbrella.
Before we left Satori’s house, I had brought two on purpose, but before I knew it, Toa had said in an exaggerated way, “I lost it,” and that was how this happened.
Losing something she had borrowed without permission from someone else’s house was honestly crazy. And the owner was one of the three great families. It would not surprise me if it ended up buried in the ground.
“Hehe…”
Despite having done something like that, Toa wore a delighted smile. There was such a thing as being too reckless.
“Senpai, you’re getting wet, so could you move a little closer?”
Toa said in a coquettish voice and pressed even tighter against me.
“We’re close enough already.”
“Not at all.”
The physical pressure was so intense that I could not walk properly.
I had thought sharing an umbrella was supposed to be more elegant and picturesque, but with Toa, her mischievousness was too strong, and it was nothing like I had imagined.
“I can’t help it, so I’ll just cling to you!”
See, she wrapped her arms around my arm without a care for the rain.
“Isn’t this basically not sharing an umbrella anymore?”
“That’s what makes this situation great. We’re sneaking away together on the run, right? Finding happiness in everyday little moments while escaping pursuers. This is it!”
“You read too many manga.”
“I don’t want to hear that from you, Senpai. Not from the one who was about to abandon us for his game…”
For a moment, the grip on my arm tightened.
Her expression was a smile, but why? It did not look like she was smiling at all.
“That hurts…”
“I’m never letting go, okay?”
She rubbed her cheek against me like she was marking her territory, and as I tensed up inside, a nearby speaker broadcast an island-wide announcement.
“This is the Black Tide Island Disaster Prevention Bureau. A typhoon is approaching Black Tide Island. Please refrain from non-essential outings, and if there is concern about flooding or landslides, evacuate immediately. I repeat…”
The island broadcasts came from the community center and were usually used for things like the five o’clock chime, missing child announcements, or emergency communications.
Since the three great families oversaw them, they were sometimes used for personal gain, but most cases were like this one.
“The typhoon seems worse than I thought.”
Toa said with unease.
“Yeah. This one’s pretty bad.”
“I’m getting worried, so is it okay to hurry?”
“Of course.”
We quickened our pace.
After walking for a few minutes, a large building came into view ahead.
The children’s home on the edge of the island–Black Tide Garden–was a two-story concrete structure, and including the yard, it was about half the size of our high school’s playground.
Even considering that our high school was on the brink of closure with barely ten students per class, it was still plenty spacious. If anything, it was too big.
In fact, more than half the students at that high school came from this facility, so the balance of numbers and space made some sense.
However, the building itself was old, with walls dulled from exposure to rain and wind, and the edges of the roof were starting to peel.
It truly had an unsettling appearance. It would not be surprising if the typhoon blew it away.
“This is where I live. It’s because Senpai won’t take me as his bride soon enough…”
She pouted and grumbled in complaint, but before the confinement, Toa had been coming to my house eight days a week. At least, I did not think it was fair to blame me.
“Anyway, let’s set that aside for now…”
“Senpai, that’s so mean.”
We had arrived, but I had not decided what to do specifically. For now, I would just follow Toa.
“Senpai, this way.”
It seemed she was taking me to her room.
The inside of the building had a shared living room, toilet, bath, kitchen, and several six-mat individual rooms.
The hallway walls were decorated with children’s handprint art and caricatures, giving it the feel of an elementary school.
“I finally got my own room when I started middle school. Until then, communal living was such a real stress.”
Toa grumbled as she walked down the hallway.
“I’d totally welcome sharing a room with Senpai, though.”
“I’m definitely a private room guy.”
“Jeez!”
