- Chapter 6 - My Classmate, My Sister/Hinata is a Good Cook/My Mom
My Classmate, My Sister/Hinata is a Good Cook/My Mom
When I returned to the living room, the first thing that caught my attention was this delicious aroma.
I looked and saw Hinata standing in the kitchen, waving with a frying pan.
“Hinata…? Are you cooking?”
“It’s a simple dish. Oh, maybe you didn’t like having someone else in the kitchen?”
“No, that’s not it. I was just surprised.”
When she said she was going to prepare dinner, I thought she was going to buy it somewhere, but she meant she was going to cook it herself.
After a few minutes of waiting, a plate of carbonara was brought to me. I clapped my hands together, twirled the pasta around my fork, and took a bite.
“Delicious.”
The combination of the milk, cheese and black pepper was a perfect match. I used to be satisfied with store-bought sauces, but I never realized how good homemade sauces can be.
“Really? That’s great, it’s the first time you’re eating my cooking, so I was nervous whether you would say it was delicious or not. Oh, by the way, I used your ingredients without permission. Sorry if you were planning to use it for dinner tonight.”
“No, not at all. I wouldn’t have been able to use those ingredients to make something this good, and I’m rather thankful because you cooked for me. I didn’t know Hinata is such a good cook.”
“My mom often works until late at night, so I’ve been making my own meals since I was in middle school. …by the way, this is my way of showing you that if you live with me, you won’t have any trouble with food, right? I think it would be a great deal if you lived with me.”
Unexpectedly, my hand dropped the fork.
“…that’s a good deal.”
“Right? The deal also includes cleaning and laundry as well.”
“That sounds like a newspaper sales pitch.”
My mouth relaxed unexpectedly. After all, Hinata is very considerate to others. She even made jokes like that to make me comfortable.
“Hinata really is my sister, right?”
Hinata nods and pulls out a sheet of paper from her bag – it is a copy of Hinata’s family register.
Indeed, it shows that her father is Tetsuya Minato, my father.
“I guess it’s true after all. …since when Hinata know I’m your half-brother?”
“From the first time we met in student council actually. My mom remarried when I was in middle school, and she told me about Tetsuya and his son. I never thought we would meet in high school, though.”
So, I’m the only one who didn’t know… Well, it must be hard to tell me that we are half sisters and brothers, and I’m sure Hinata had gone through a lot because of it as well.
“Which means my dad had another child. …wow, I have mixed feelings. I like my dad, so I don’t really want to blame him too much.”
“I heard that Tetsuya-san is working overseas right now? So, does that mean you live by yourself, Yuto?”
“Well, yeah…? Wait a minute. My mom passed away a long time ago, but how does Hinata know about it? The only person who knows anything about my mother is Tsukino.”
“—ahh.”
At that moment, Hinata was flustered,
“Um, yeah, why do I know about it! Come to think of it, I think Yuto told me about it a long time ago didn’t you…?!”
I don’t remember I told Hinata about my mom. But sure, I’ve known Hinata since the first grade, and I may have told her about my personal life, maybe I just don’t remember about it.
“Ah, maybe I’ve told you about it. Well, Hinata is my older sister, so I’ll tell you about it again. My mother passed away due to illness. So, I live here all by myself now.”
“…yeah.”
I was only five years old when my mother passed away. She fought her illness to her limits so that she can live with me as long as she could, and I remember her always being there for me.
Even as a child, I somehow understood that my mom didn’t have much time left. However, Mom never once felt pessimistic about her situation.
She was always kind to me, even though she should have been in more pain and scared than anyone else, but she always smiled at me until the moment she passed away.
So, every time I think about my mom, I always remember her smiling.
I always think I want to be like her.
Until this day, she is still my inspiration in life and someone I wanted to be.
“I mean, it was a long time ago, so you don’t have to worry about it. Also, I’d like to ask you one more question, is Hinata still mad at dad for cheating on your mom…?”
“Umm… I have to admit, I don’t really think of him as a father. I hardly ever talk to him, and I think of him more as a kind uncle. He seems to be paying my child support until I’m an adult, so I don’t feel too bad about it, you know?”
I even felt like I was saved by those words. It was my father, who took care of my mother who didn’t have much time left to live, and raised me all these years with his own hands.
I couldn’t blame my dad even if the rest of the world condemned him.
“I can’t believe it, Hinata really is my older sister. But you know, there’s one more thing I’d like to ask–why do you want to live with me after all this time?”
“…I guess I wanted to have a special relationship with Yuto.”
“…eh?”
