- Chapter 13
Episode 13: Her Favorite Food, Mame-Daifuku
TL: lime
ED: Spynine01
It was after school that day.
After finishing my work as a member of the library committee, I was on my way back home.
“I’m home~…”
The library committee works twice a day, once in the afternoon and once in the evening.
Tomi-san seemed to have left school early and so I was left to work alone in the evening.
That’s why I was a little later than usual today.
“Welcome back, Taro.”
Rin, in her casual clothes, greets me with a smile.
“Sorry, I’m late.”
I had to work as a member of the library committee, so I had asked her to leave before me.
“No, don’t worry about it… is that? Taro, what’s that?”
Rin noticed the plastic bag dangling in my hand.
“Well, it’s Mame-Daifuku. I’m sure you’ll have a great time with this.” (TL: a japanese sweet.) [ED: Click here for an image and some more info about what it is. It seems so yum]
Rin rolled her eyes and said,
“You remember…?”
“Of course I remember. That’s obvious, isn’t it?”
Sniff, Rin’s eyes welled up with tears.
“…Thank you.”
“Oh, I think you’re overreacting a little…?”
“No, I’m happy. I think my mother… will be pleased.”
Rin said with a honeyed smile.
We headed towards the living room.
“But we’re in trouble now. I bought some too, you know, mame-daifuku?”
“Eh, ah, was that so? I’m sorry.”
On the living room table, there was a pack of mame-daifuku from “Obuse Sweet Hall” as well. (TL:小布施甘味堂, probably a sweet store.)
“Well. I’ll bring Taro’s half to my mother.”
“Then what about Rin’s?”
“We’ll eat them together after supper.”
If I took two packs, my aunt would get in trouble.
After a while.
After Rin’s delicious dinner, we decided to eat the mame-daifuku.
“Here, hojicha.”(TL: a japanese green tea.)
I grabbed a cup of water for myself and headed to the living room.
“Thank you… Ehehe~♡.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Taro, you remembered.”
“Yes, it’s hojicha with mame-daifuku. I’ll never forget it.”
We sat down with each other side by side.
I could see Rin was sitting right beside me.
It’s a skirt again today.
She wears very short skirts at home. And so her legs are bare to the eyes.
It looks so white and smooth….
“Do you want a lap pillow?”
“I-it’s fine… Look, let’s eat now.”
Rin picked up a piece of mame-daifuku and took a bite.
“~~~~~♪.”
The speed of the limply fluttering, flutters, and she flutters both her feet.
“Fufu~”
“Hmm? What is it, Taro?
“No, it’s the same old thing. You know, Rin always flaps her legs whenever she eats them.”
“R-Really…?”
She didn’t seem to be aware of it at all.
Well, it’s hard to notice your subconscious habits on your own.
“It’s embarrassing… I’ll be careful from now on.”
“Isn’t it okay though? It’s not like you’re doing anything wrong or anything.”
“Y-Yeah…”
Rin carefully brought the mame daifuku to her mouth.
“~~~~♪”
Flutter, flutter.
“Hah~. I did it again… I was being so careful too.”
“A habit is not something you can get rid of so quickly.”
“Ku… This time.”
Paku.
Flutter, flutter.
“I-It’s no good… I can’t control it… It’s because this mame-daifuku is just too delicious.”
The chewy texture, with just the right amount of sweet and saltiness.
This is definitely too delicious.
Hojicha goes really well with this too.
“Yes! You know the difference, don’t you, Taro?”
“What’s the difference, the difference?” [ED: line is literally like this, no clue why.]
We lined up and ate the delicious mame-daifuku.
Rin is usually a small eater, but this Daifuku was special to her.
She finished two of the four Daifuku we had left.
“Fu-u~…”
“You’re as fast as ever.”
“It’s so delicious…”
Glance, glance, Rin glanced at the Daifuku in my hand.
This is also no different than the past huh.
“Okay, Rin. I’ll give you one of mine.”
“Eh? Is that really… okay?”
“Yes. Just one is enough for me.”
I held a Daifuku in front of Rin’s hand.
Pa~a…! and her expression brightened up.
But… she immediately furrows her brow after.
“It would be bad of me to do so…”
“It’s fine. Go ahead.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Rin smiles and takes it in her hand.
“Well, I won’t hesitate then.”
“Yes, please.”
Rin eats the mame-daifuku.
“~~~~~♪.”
Flutter, she flaps her feet again.
“Somehow, Rin is still… Rin.”
“? What a weird thing to say about me.”
“Ah, no. Rin is very beautiful. To be honest, sometimes I feel like you’re a celebrity or maybe you’re a celebrity I don’t know of… but when I look at your old habits like this I go, Ah, that’s right, you’re still the Rin I know.”
Rin and I were childhood friends, but we didn’t live together.
There are many things that we don’t really know about each other, and as we’ve gotten older, we’ve spent less and less time actually playing together.
However, there are many things we do know about each other, especially since we spent so much time together when we were children.
There were times when I felt like I was somewhat like a stranger to the beautifully grown Rin, but…
Ah, I’m so relieved to know that she’s still Rin after all.
“You’re complimenting me too much… Taro…”
“? Does this count as a compliment?
“Yes, it does. Mou~, Taro…you can’t do that, okay? You can’t say the same thing to any other girls. Just keep saying this to your wife.”
“? Yeah, I understand.”
“All right then.”
Rin ate the mame daifuku with relish.
Every time she does, she flaps her feet.
『Come on, Rin, the girl’s not here.』
Aunt’s voice echoes in my mind.
“What time is uncle coming tomorrow?”
“…Dad said he’s too busy to come.”
“Ah… really? Well, it can’t be helped.”
“Un… Ah, but Grandma and Grandpa are coming instead!”
Rin’s expression was a little clouded, but she still said so with a smile.
“You really like your grandparents, don’t you Rin.”
“Un…!”
But I know.
I know that the one she loves the most is Aunt, or should I say Rin’s mother.
“I have to tell her that I got married too.”
“… I guess so. Will she be happy?”
“I’m sure she’ll be happy.”
