Chapter 61 – Cafe Date
Two weeks have passed since I had the meeting with Kasui-san and met Sumire-san’s father.
It took a day to create one illustration, so the basic rough sketch is now complete.
I sent the rough sketch to Kasui-san, got the OK, so all that’s left is to finalize it.
“Youichi-san.”
“Yes?”
“You’ve been cooped up due to work lately, so please take a break soon.”
Being conscious of my tendency to concentrate, I always try to stop and talk to Sumire-san every morning and evening. Thanks to that, I was able to get through the two weeks without getting sick.
Yumi-san has school, so she only comes over on weekends to have meals together.
“Phew, okay. Now that I’ve reached a stopping point, I’ll take a break.”
The illustrations are completed up to the rough stage, and I’ve received approval for the cover and frontispiece.
Since there’s no need to paint the illustrations, it’s okay to take a little break.
“Yes! How about going to eat something delicious once in a while?”
“Something delicious?”
“Yes!”
I was led by Sumire-san, who looked happy, and we came to the cafe.
She wore a fluffy sweater with a long skirt swaying gently, and her boots made a rhythmic sound as she walked.
About a 10-minute walk from Ginza Station, it’s a café with a classic storefront.
The atmosphere is calm and the people talking seem to exude a somewhat mature vibe.
I feel a little overwhelmed being in this wonderful cafe. The name of the café is written in a language I don’t understand, and cute black cat figurines are placed around.
Despite the surprisingly young clientele, the atmosphere feels more sophisticated, making it seem like there’s no need to feel nervous.
I can also see families enjoying themselves.
“I used to come here often with my family. I love the fruit sandwiches here.”
I thought Sumire-san would go for parfait or pancakes, but turns out she’s here for the fruit sandwich. They’re not big, but with a modestly sweet cream and seasonal fruits, they have an elegant taste.
“It’s delicious.”
“That’s right. Everyone in my family loves it too.”
For me, who’s almost a newcomer to Ginza, this café is definitely one I wouldn’t know.
“It’s a taste of home, isn’t it?”
“Yes!”
Sumire-san is in a good mood.
Ever since the cosplay photo session and my meeting with her father, Sumire-san has been in a good mood more often.
Recently, she’s returned to university, so she’s been away from home more often from morning till night.
These past two weeks, we’ve only had time together in the early mornings and evenings.
I was also able to concentrate on my work, so I could see that she was keeping just the right distance from me.
Suddenly, I noticed Sumire-san’s nails were beautifully done.
In my memory, they were simply painted, so I didn’t think there were any decorations.
“Is there something on my hand?”
“Yeah. I noticed you have cute nails.”
“Thank you for noticing. Actually, Yumi did them for me.”
“Eh? Yumi-san?”
“Yes. She wants to get a job in the beauty industry because she doesn’t want to go to college.”
Beauty industry or nails, our way of thinking really is different…
I guess Yumi-san is thinking about the future too.
“Sumire-san wants to be a lawyer, and Yumi-san wants to be a nail artist. That’s amazing.”
“Youichi-san’s talent is also amazing.”
Suddenly, I saw the menu, but there were no prices listed.
“I’m thirsty. Would you like some coffee?”
“Yeah, that sounds good.”
I finished the coffee I ordered along with the fruit sandwich.
The sandwich is indeed delicious, but eating the cream makes me thirsty.
“Ah, Youichi-san, you mustn’t pay.”
“Huh? Why?”
“I still owe you so much for your help. Lately, you’ve been so focused on work, and I haven’t been able to take care of you because of university either. I want to do this much for you.”
Hmm, I also feel like I want to contribute financially, but Sumire-san tends to sulk when I try to pay in situations like this, so it’s probably best to hold back.
“Recently, famous people have been posting the fruit sandwich here on social media, so the number of customers has increased compared to before.”
Social Media… I haven’t kept up with current culture at all.
I use Twitter and Pixiv for work, but I don’t use them at all for personal use.
I wonder if Sumire-san uses Social Media because she is young? I don’t know about Instagram or TikTok, but trendy girls seem to use them.
“Does Sumire-san also use Social Media?”
“Yes. Although I hardly ever post anything myself, I just like to browse.”
“Still, that’s impressive. I have no idea about it at all.”
“Anyone can just browse.”
While listening to a lecture about Social Media at the fashionable cafe, the two of us had a great time for a change of pace, and I felt a happiness I had never experienced before.
However, when Sumire-san pulled out her black card to pay the bill and I saw the four-digit total, it goes without saying that I had to ponder whether I had the courage to come here again.
