Chapter 1
Gghhhh.
As I was cleaning up the dishes in the kitchen, my little sister’s stomach growled, having just eaten dinner.
It was understandable.
The amount of food was far too small.
Our meal this evening consisted of only half a small bowl of rice with some seaweed as seasoning.
We are both 14 and 17 years old respectively and being in our prime age for eating, we really wanted to eat a hearty dinner, but unfortunately, this is the best we can afford in our house.
It has been five years since my parents died.
My after-school part-time job is the only source of income for me and my little sister, forcing us to live a meager life.
“Are you hungry, Miku? You can have my breakfast for tomorrow.”
Feeling sad for my little sister, I suggested this to her as she sat on the tattered sofa looking at a comic book that she had probably read more than ever.
My little sister… Miku Andou shook her head.
“Unn~, it’s okay. I fine.”
“You don’t have to be modest, you know?”
“I’m fine. Rather than that, Onii-chan should eat my breakfast for tomorrow. You’re working to support Miku while also attending school. You need to eat a lot.”
“… uu.”
The little sister’s genuine concern made my eyes burn with tears.
I’m really sorry, Miku.
Because I don’t make enough, I’ve been putting you through a lot of hardship as well.
Just wait a little longer.
Oniichan will going to study hard, get into a top university, get a job at a great company, and make it easy for you with a high salary.
“Okay then…let’s get ready again!”
With that vow in my heart, I finished up washing the dishes and started preparing to head for my late-night part-time job.
“Well, I’ll be off then.”
“Un, see you later, Oniichan.”
I finish getting ready for my part-time job and open the front door.
As I am about to leave the house, my little sister would run up to me and gives me a light hug, as always.
This alone was enough to motivate me to do my best.
I wake up early in the morning and deliver newspapers.
I study hard at school, and when I get home, I get into a late-night job.
I work until around two o’clock and come home at three o’clock.
Then I sleep for about three hours and then get ready to deliver newspapers again.
This is my daily schedule, and it is extremely hard.
Frankly speaking, I am worn out both physically and mentally, and I feel like giving up everything, however, if I were to give up, Miku will starve to death.
That is something I can’t let happen.
As her older brother, I have a duty to make Miku happy, no matter what it takes.
All right, I’ll git it my best again today.
“Take care of housekeeper, Miku. Don’t open the door for strangers, okay?
“Un, understood.”
After having that exchange with Miku, I finally left the apartment I was renting for 30,000 yen.
I went down the rusty iron stairs and walked through the residential area.
“Fu~n~fu~n~fu~n~…”
As I walked skipping along, humming a tune to distract myself from my fatigue.
And just as I was approaching a corner.
“…!?”
A Gun! And suddenly, a shock hit me on the head.
Before I could realize what had happened, I fell and lost consciousness.
Finally, I thought I heard the sound of my own body collapsing and hit the ground.
“The next morning news.”
In a very unfortunate incident,
Early last night, a meteorite of several dozen centimeters fell in the ~ district of ~ and hit Shogo Ando, a sophomore in ~ high school, who happened to be walking nearby, in the head.
Ando san suffered a fractured skull.
He was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after.
The police took into custody Ando’s younger sister, Miku Ando, 14, who had no living relatives.
