Chapter 26: Nursing~A Gentle and Warm Room

The events unfolded in an unexpected way. Neiko-san, who had seemed a bit off since earlier, actually went down with something. Her body felt hot and her breathing was labored. Though she was still able to stand, but she was leaning most of her body weight on me, struggling to walk on her own. 

“We’re almost to the bus stop…! Just hang in there a little longer…!”

I supported Neiko-san by her side while getting us to the bus stop. I considered finding a place for her to rest, but I decided the best place to rest was at home. I could pick up anything we needed at the convenience store near my apartment. So for now, my top priority was to get Neiko-san back home. 

“I’m sorry, A-kun… For ending up… Like this…”

“Don’t worry about it. It’s really okay. And you don’t have to force yourself to talk.”

“…Even though… The two of us… Came all this way here… To have fun…”

“We can always come again. There’s plenty of time for this in the future.”

We soon arrived at the bus stop as Neiko-san apologized. Her voice only came as a whimper. Luckily, we didn’t need to wait long for the bus. Now, Neiko-san only had to hold on for just 30 more minutes. I was filled with both impatience and worry. I took off my jacket and draped it over Neiko-san. Despite the limited space, I positioned Neiko-san so she could rest her head on my lap like a pillow, hoping I could make her a bit comfortable. Her forehead was sweaty and warm to the touch. Her breathing labored and pained.

I wasn’t sure how much I could help her, but I did everything I could as of now. I gently stroked her hair and wiped her sweat with a handkerchief so I could bring her a little relief.

Thirty minutes later, we finally reached the bus stop in front of the university. Neiko-san looked like she was struggling to sit up, but she managed to summon enough strength to stand on her feet. I supported her as we walked. Step by step, we gradually made our way back home. We were moving slowly but steadily. 

Once we were inside, I immediately guided her straight to the bed and helped her lie down. I pulled a small towel from the dresser, dampened it with cool water and gently placed it on her forehead. I had to get to the convenience store to buy some essentials like ice packs and fever-relief jellies. Just as I turned toward the entrance, I heard Neiko-san calling out for me weakly. 

“A-…-kun…”

I stopped in my tracks. I immediately turned my attention back to her. 

“What’s the matter? Do you need anything?”

“No… that’s… not it…”

What is it then?

I kneeled beside her and leaned my ear close so I could hear her more clearly. 

“…I don’t need… Anything… Right now… So…”

“Huh?”

“Your hand…”

“Hand…?”

“Please… Hold… My hand…”

She said while she slowly placed her warm hand over mine. 

“Don’t… Leave me… Alone…”

“…”

“Just stay… By my side…”

Her words were short, but  Neiko-san conveyed her feelings to me as best as she could.  I had to go to the convenience store to buy what she needed, but rather than that… I wanted to honor her wishes more. I nodded and covered her with another disheveled blanket, making sure she was comfortable all the while our hands remained intertwined. 

“If there’s anything you want me to do, just let me know. I’ll do my best to fulfill your wish.”

“…Please… Stay… With me…”

“Yes. I will stay by your side, but I think it’s better if I don’t talk too much. If I start a conversation, I know you will feel the need to respond, Neiko-san. You need to focus on resting for now, Neiko-san.”

“No… In fact… I want you to… Talk to me…”

“But…”

I started to protest, but fell silent for a moment. After pondering my options, I opened my mouth again. 

“Alright. I’m going to talk on my own and you can respond only when you want to. You don’t need to say anything in return. You can just listen to my rambles.”

I said so and a small smile appeared on her face. Her expression looked so soft, even though she must be in great pain. 

“Anyway, regarding our trip today…”

I began to speak and Neiko-san Neiko-san tightened her grip on my hand just a little. The night felt cold during the fall season like this. The light in my room must’ve looked warmer from the outside than usual.

I felt like I had been talking on my own for about 30 minutes. I didn’t keep track of the time, but when I glanced at the clock.. Yeah, seemed about right. Neiko-san was now asleep. Our hands were still intertwined.

I slowly moved away from her so I could head to the convenience store. She never told me what she wanted, but I knew I had to gather a few items she might like, along with some cold remedies. I bought basic things like jelly, yogurt, health drinks, instant porridge, and cooling patches. After making my purchase, I returned home and tiptoed to my bathroom, trying not to make any loud noise. I took a shower and a thought crossed my mind.

Neiko-san… Did she already wipe her body…? But… There are places she can’t reach, like her back… Not to mention, there’s no way she can shower in her current state… No, for real? Then, what should I…?

“No, no… What am I thinking?!”

Neiko-san had a cold. She wasn’t feeling well. It was downright shameful for me to have lewd thoughts about someone who wasn’t feeling well. Absolutely ridiculous. 

“Well… I’ll figure something out. She could turn her body around or I could step outside for a bit. Ahhh, this is bad…”

Sighing, I buried my head in my hands in frustration. Even though I didn’t have the luxury of taking my time in the bathroom, but I couldn’t stop myself from recalling how cute Neiko-san looked while we were walking together in Sannomiya. From outsiders’ perspective, we must’ve looked like a couple.

“No, no. She’s the confined and I’m the one confining. That’s the nature of our relationship…. Nothing more, nothing less…”

I thought to myself, trying to ignore the feelings that were welling up inside of me to no avail.
