Chapter 02: The Structure of This World and Unique Magic “Light”

After returning home and having dinner with my family, I took a bath in the huge bathhouse and thought about my future.

Once awakened, one can only use their unique magic and everyday magic (non-attribute magic). However, their magical power increases dramatically, so if they master it, they can gain enough strength to crush troublesome matters head-on.

Given the number of foreign spies hidden in this country, it’s safe to assume that my awakening is known worldwide. So, why did the priest announce it in such a public setting? Because in this world, an awakened individual is like a “nuclear weapon” in the old world.

Announcing the presence of an awakened person becomes a deterrent to prevent wars.

Of course, the Kanan Empire won’t let such a deterrent slip away easily. By tomorrow, envoys from the imperial capital will arrive to recruit me into the military and check on my future plans.

“Ugh, what a hassle. But the Kanan Empire doesn’t want to anger an awakened person, so I’ll deal with them appropriately. For now, I guess I’ll focus on training my magic and swordsmanship.”

That’s right. The Ainsberg Marquisate, also known as the “Border Marquis,” is the only territory that borders another country. Therefore, it is considered crucial for national defense, with a massive fortress and the authority for my father, the commander, to make decisions during wartime.

When another country attacks, there’s no time to seek approval from the high-ranking officials in the imperial capital. War is not that lenient.

There are also an absurdly large number of troops. The Kanan Empire’s military mainly consists of the navy and the army. Within the army, the Ainsberg Marquisate’s forces are the second largest.

The largest army is the Imperial Capital’s army, which operates around the capital city. It has about 200,000 soldiers in total, split evenly with 100,000 in the magical division and 100,000 in the knight division.

The Kanan Empire is located on the west side of the largest continent in the world. The country’s west side is surrounded by the sea, while the east side is bordered by the massive Heavenly Dragon Mountain Range that runs vertically across the continent.

In other words, it’s a natural fortress. This is one of the reasons why Kanan has risen to be one of the top three empires in the world.

There are only two ways to invade the empire: one is by attacking from the sea, and the other is by passing through the great canyon in the Heavenly Dragon Mountain Range. 

The Ainsberg Marquisate is the only territory facing this great canyon and has repelled all past invasions, making the Ainsberg family uniquely famous and highly trusted by the royal family.

The Ainsbergs have significant political influence, so no one is foolish enough to openly challenge them. Anyone who does would face the wrath of the royal family and other great nobles, and I wouldn’t allow it either.

“But I don’t plan to join any army, and once things are peaceful enough that I don’t have to worry about war, I’d like to travel the world as an adventurer. Since being alone would be lonely, maybe I’ll find a human companion or a magical beast as a partner.”

The next morning, since I woke up early, I had Kael bring me breakfast. I ate while shaking my messy hair.

During the meal, since I had no one to talk to, I spent the whole time thinking about my unique magic, “Light.” Unique magic is special because only the person who has it can use it, so unlike other elemental or non-elemental magic, there are no magic books for it. You have to create and use the magic yourself.

I was eager to use elemental and non-elemental magic, so I spent a lot of time in the large library in the marquisate and the study at home, gaining a considerable amount of knowledge (though I say “considerable,” it’s actually pretty thorough).

My mother, who used to be part of the magic corps, has already taught me how to control magical power and use non-elemental magic. I’ve learned several non-elemental spells, but I still can’t use the particularly difficult “body enhancement” spell. 

However, I’ve been watching and sometimes joining the training of the marquisate’s knights, led by my father, since I was little. So, I think I’ll be able to use it eventually.

Incidentally, I heard that my mother also sometimes shows up at the magic division of the Marquis’ army. My mother is a former captain, so I guess she is looked up to.

Attribute magic cannot be used without undergoing the ritual of selection, so what you learn will not be of much use. But it is important to anticipate what kind of attack the enemy will make when fighting them, so it is not considered a loss.

By the way, my mother occasionally shows up at the marquisate’s magic corps. Since she used to be a captain, she probably commands respect.

Elemental magic can’t be used without undergoing the selection ritual, so what I’ve learned isn’t very useful for now. But it’s important to predict what kind of attacks the enemy might use in battle, so it’s not a waste of time.

“Last night, before bed, I thought a bit about my unique magic. When I combine it with my knowledge from my previous life, it seems like it could become pretty powerful.”

As I finished breakfast and headed towards the study, I ran into my older brother, Lloyd.

“Good morning, Al. Your hair is even messier than usual today. Haha.”

“Morning, Brother. Stop it… By the way, when you hear ‘Light,’ what do you normally think of?”

“Oh, my brilliant little brother is already thinking about his unique magic, huh? Well, the only things that come to mind are the light of the sun and moon, and how plants absorb light to grow.”

“Yeah, I figured. It might not be very versatile.”

“But I believe you’ll become top-notch as an awakened one, Al. It would also help if you could take over as the head of the marquisate.”

“Thanks. But no way, I’m not doing that.”

“That’s too bad. But do your best, I’m cheering for you.”

“Yeah, thanks.”

After that, I went to the grand library with Kael and some knights as guards. I spent the rest of the day reading up on past awakened individuals.
