- Chapter 7: Honoka's Subtle Reaction
“How did it go, Honoka-senpai?”
“Ah, yeah. It’s all good. They’ve accepted the job offer.”
“Really? That’s great! Congratulations!”
“Thanks.”
It looked like the job seeker who had the interview earlier had accepted the job offer from the company. Kosakai-san seemed really happy, smiling brightly.
She had been looking rather grim just a moment ago, but when she smiled, she was incredibly cute. Paired with her delicate white blouse with frills, she almost looked like a popular idol.
A recruitment agency introduced job seekers to companies looking for talent. Only once the candidate was hired did the agency receive a fee, which was the success fee.
Simply introducing a candidate didn’t generate revenue.
Therefore, it was very important for the candidate to have an interview, receive a job offer, and then accept it, committing to join the company. This was how the agency earned its success fee.
“Kosakai-san, good for you. Congratulations.”
“Ah, yeah.”
Wait, why did she respond with such a thin reaction when I congratulated her?
Kosakai-san began rummaging through the drawer of the shared supply cabinet by the wall. She was so small that she looked like a child searching for toys… though I probably shouldn’t think that.
“Ah…”
“What happened, Honoka-senpai?”
“I don’t have any more erasers. I lost mine yesterday. This is a problem.”
“Ah, sorry, Honoka-senpai. I forgot to order the stock.”
“Well, it’s fine. I’ll go buy some. But it looks hot outside, so I’m not thrilled… my skin might get sunburned.”
Kosakai-san looked out the window, a troubled expression on her face.
She even sighed.
I felt a bit sorry for her.
It was not that I was trying to get her to like me or anything… I just happened to want a drink, so maybe I’d go to the convenience store and pick up an eraser while I was at it.
“Hey, Kosakai-san, Aido-san, I’m going to grab a drink from the convenience store. I’ll pick up an eraser too.”
“Eh, really? Thank you, Hirabayashi-san!”
Aido-san said that, but next to her, Kosakai-san flatly replied, “I don’t really need anything.”
However, I ignored her and left the office.
I was sure she was just being polite.
〈Girls’ Side〉
“See, Honoka-senpai, Hirabayashi-san is a good person, right?”
“What are you talking about, Ruka-tan? He’s just trying to flatter us to get us to like him.”
“I don’t think so.”
“No, I’m absolutely sure that’s the case.”
“How can you be so certain?”
“Well… like I said earlier, when an unattractive guy is kind to you, it’s always because he has an ulterior motive.”
“Here we go again with the Honoka Theory. That’s an extreme argument. I think Hirabayashi-san is different though.”
“He’s not.”
“Well, Hirabayashi-san helped me out yesterday, didn’t he?”
“Yesterday? What are you talking about?”
Ruka then explained the events from the previous evening to Honoka.
“Even so, that guy just wanted to get close to cute Ruka-tan.”
“I don’t think that’s true. After he helped me, he didn’t linger or try to talk to me too much. He didn’t even ask for my contact details.”
“But still… Well, anyway… and seriously, ‘Hirarin’ is a weird name.”
“That’s not even a logical argument anymore, senpai. The Honoka Theory has been defeated. Hehe…”
“Ugh…”
“Well, you don’t have to decide right away. If you hang out with Hirabayashi-san for a while, you’ll understand what kind of person he is.”
“Well… I guess so…”
Honoka’s idol-like face looked a bit frustrated, but she didn’t say anything more and sat at her desk to start working.
“I’m back. Here, Kosakai-san, I got this for you.”
Rinta came back and handed an eraser to Honoka.
“Oh… thanks.”
Honoka, realizing it would be rude not to react, thanked him, though her face remained neutral.
“Also, I bought these. Feel free to have them during snack time.”
From the convenience store bag, Rinta pulled out four fancy-looking dessert puddings.
Truth be told, Rinta loved pudding.
“They look delicious. Thank you, Hirabayashi-san. I’ll put them in the fridge.”
Ruka thanked him politely, but next to her, Honoka muttered in a flat tone.
“I don’t need them.”
“Hmm. Well, I’ll have them then. These are a new release, and they’re a bit expensive, so I was curious. Thanks, Honoka-senpai.”
“Eh…? Ah…”
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, really…”
As Rinta looked at the two of them in confusion, Ruka spoke to him.
“Honoka-senpai doesn’t like sweets, you know. So I’ll take them instead. Is that okay, Hirabayashi-san?”
“Ah, yeah. Of course. I didn’t realize Honoka-san didn’t like sweets. Sorry for not checking before I bought them.”
“Yes, that’s right. So from now on, don’t buy any sweets for Honoka-senpai, okay?”
“O-okay. Got it.”
When Ruka said this, Honoka grumbled in a slightly bitter tone, “Ugh…”
Rinta scratched his head awkwardly, sitting back down at his desk. Ruka took the four puddings, put them in the fridge, and then returned to her desk.
Rinta’s desk faced Honoka and Ruka’s desks. Honoka leaned toward Ruka and whispered quietly, so that Rinta couldn’t hear, giving her a glare.
“Hey, Ruka-tan. You know I love sweets, so why did you do that?”
“Well, Honoka-senpai, it’s your fault for refusing them. Or do you want Hirabayashi-san to buy you sweets from now on?”
“No, that’s not it.”
“Well, then it’s fine, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, I guess so…”
Honoka’s face showed a bit of frustration. It was obvious that she really wanted the sweets.
The three of them then started working.
A little while after lunch break, the phone rang.
“Yes, this is Kosakai from Rikuado Company.”
Honoka answered the phone cheerfully, but as she listened to the other person’s words, her expression changed to one of concern.
“Eh…? W-wait a minute. Where are you right now? …Okay, well, please come to our office again right now… Yes… Yes, thank you.”
As Honoka handled the call with a rushed tone, a slight tension spread through the office.
