- Chapter 59: Did You Get a Girlfriend?
“Hey Hirarin. Did you get a girlfriend?”
“What’s with that sudden question, Totsuka?”
“Well, Nakajima and I were just talking about it. This guy broke up with his girlfriend last month, apparently.”
“Is that true, Nakajima?”
“Yeah, it’s true. I’m officially on the girlfriend hunt.”
Nakajima laughed heartily. He was a positive guy, not getting depressed about it.
“I see. As for me… I don’t have a girlfriend.”
“You must at least have someone you like?”
“I don’t!”
“Really? Aren’t there any lovely girls at your company?”
“Well, that’s… there are.”
—To be honest, they were all wonderful women. But…
“But there’s no way someone like me would have a chance with them.”
“Come on, Hirarin. Don’t be so down. You’ve always been shy around girls.”
“No, I’m not particularly depressed about it.”
“Actually, I don’t have a girlfriend or anyone I like right now either. Which means…”
Totsuka, for some reason, looked toward a group of girls standing a short distance away.
Three girls wearing rather short skirts and somewhat flashy clothes could be heard chatting noisily, saying things like “Where should we go?”
They were a bit younger than us and looked cute.
“Let’s go talk to those girls and invite them to drink with us.”
What!? Picking up girls?
Totsuka was always a bit of a player back in high school… He was slim and didn’t look bad, but he was pretty ordinary. Not exactly what you’d call handsome.
Nakajima, a former rugby player, had a wild look about him, but as a forward player, he was stocky. He was not ugly, but he was not the type women flocked to either.
And then there was me. That went without saying.
Could three guys like us really succeed at picking up girls?
—Besides, I didn’t want to drink with girls badly enough to go hitting on strangers.
Even if we did pick up some girls, I wouldn’t know how to make clever conversation or what topics to talk about.
“Hey, Totsuka. I’m fine with just us guys.”
I said that, but Totsuka smiled mischievously.
“That’s why you can’t get a girlfriend, Hirarin. Just watch. I’ll go talk to them.”
With those words, Totsuka approached the three somewhat flashy girls.
“Hey, Nakajima. Will Totsuka be okay?”
“Well, it’ll be interesting. If it works out, we might meet someone new, and if he crashes and burns, it’ll make for a good laugh, right?”
“I guess so, haha.”
As Nakajima and I watched from a distance, Totsuka fearlessly approached the girls. However, their reaction didn’t seem very positive, as they were shaking their heads and shrugging.
Then Totsuka turned toward us and pointed. The three girls also looked in our direction.
And then… with what seemed like exasperated expressions, they shook their heads firmly.
—Ah, rejected.
I didn’t particularly want to pick up girls anyway, but that response was still a bit sad. Being sized up and found wanting.
Totsuka came trudging back to us, and Nakajima called out to him.
“Haha, total failure, Totsuka.”
“Yeah. It didn’t work out. Well, they were pretty cute, so maybe the bar was set too high.”
“True. Can’t be helped. They were such cute girls after all.”
When Nakajima said that, I took a good look at the girls’ faces.
They were indeed cute. But… just moderately cute… right?
—Whoa, this was bad.
My sense of judgment had been warped from being surrounded by absolutely stunning women lately. Who was I to be so judgmental when I couldn’t even get a girlfriend?
—While I was thinking this, three young men who had been loitering near us started moving and passed by.
“Tch, how lame…”
“Aww, it’s sad to see guys who can’t get girls.”
“So true. They should just stay quiet instead of trying to act cool by hitting on girls.”
—Huh?
By the time I processed what they’d said, they had already passed by us and were heading toward the girls Totsuka had just approached.
All three had long, dyed blonde or spiky hair and looked extremely flashy. While not extremely handsome, they had faces that could be considered fairly good-looking.
“What’s with those guys? They’re annoying.”
After Nakajima spat out those words, he shouted, “Look, they’re talking to those girls!” Indeed, looking closer, they were hitting on the same girls as Totsuka had.
“Hmph. They’re going to get rejected too… Actually, I hope they get rejected!”
Totsuka laughed through his nose, saying something terrible. Well, I understood how he felt.
But the girls who were approached by the flashy guys seemed happy, unlike their reaction to us. They appeared to be having quite an animated conversation.
After a while, all of them, both girls and guys, looked back at us, pointing and laughing.
“Ugh, what’s with them? They’re making fun of us.”
Totsuka raised his voice, sounding extremely frustrated. Nakajima agreed.
“They really are. What awful guys! So irritating!”
“Let’s just go drinking by ourselves. Come to think of it, it’s better with just us classmates. Right, Nakajima?”
“Yeah, Totsuka. Hahaha…”
That’s right. It was better with just us classmates.
Let’s hurry up and go have a drink, just the three of us…
—Just as I was about to say this to them, Totsuka suddenly let out a strange cry.
“Whoa… she’s… gorgeous…”
Huh? What was it…?
Totsuka’s gaze was fixed on a spot a little distance away from the pickup group. Nakajima also chimed in, sounding dazed.
“You’re right. Those girls from earlier don’t even compare, right, Totsuka?”
“Yeah… no comparison…”
“Go talk to them, Totsuka.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, Nakajima. A group of beauties like that must be models or celebrities. There’s no way they’d give guys like us the time of day…”
“Y-you’re right… sorry, Totsuka.”
I followed Totsuka’s gaze. And there, to my surprise—
I saw the three beauties from my company walking together.
