- Chapter 55: Shochou, It's Time to Go Home
“Shochou! Shochou! Please wake up!”
I shook the shoulders of Jinguji-shochou who had collapsed onto the table, but she didn’t move an inch. This was bad.
The yakiniku restaurant table was covered in splattered oil. The Shochou’s white blouse would get dirty.
Despite my concern and constant nudging, Jinguji-shochou didn’t move at all. Looking at her face from the side, I could see that she was breathing peacefully, fast asleep.
—Hmm, what should I do?
I think it was better not to let her drink any more today. Looking around the table, we’d finished eating everything, so maybe we should call it a night.
With that in mind, I went to the cashier and paid the bill first.
It was supposed to be the Shochou’s treat, but oh well. She’d helped me a lot, and she’d continue to help me in various ways, so I’d just cover tonight.
Returning to the table, I placed both hands on the shoulders of the still collapsed and sleeping woman from behind, and shook her more firmly than before.
“Shochou! Please wake up! It’s time to go home!”
“Huh…?”
Jinguji-shochou raised her upper body, letting out a silly sound that didn’t match her model-like beauty. I felt slightly relieved.
“Come on, let’s go.”
“O-Okay…”
She still seemed drunk, but she managed to stand up, albeit unsteadily.
I retrieved her business bag and suit jacket from the neighboring chair and handed them to her. Jinguji-shochou struggled but somehow managed to put on her jacket and sling the bag’s shoulder strap over her shoulder.
“This way, Shochou.”
“Ah, yes…”
I pointed to the entrance of the restaurant, and she began walking unsteadily, but her eyes were vacant. This was bad.
We exited the store, and the station was just a short distance away. She should be able to manage that distance… right?
During my welcome party, Honoka had mentioned that Shochou “always manages to get home properly even when she can’t remember anything”.
If I recalled correctly, Shochou’s home was one station away by train, and very close to that station as well. I was a bit worried, so I’d escort her to the station.
Although my place was in the opposite direction, with worry in mind, I walked with her to the station.
Jinguji-shochou continued to walk unsteadily, swaying left and right, which looked dangerous. I was pretty nervous that she might twist her ankle in those high heels of hers, so reluctantly, I supported her. She didn’t say anything in particular and allowed herself to be guided, walking with uncertain steps.
—I wonder if she was so drunk that she didn’t even realize I was supporting her shoulders?
Still… I was surprised at how delicate women’s bodies were, like they might break if I applied too much pressure. Shochou was about 10 centimeters shorter than me, so around 165 centimeters, which was tall for a woman. Even so, her shoulders were narrow and slender.
“Are you okay?”
“What?”
“What do you mean ‘what’… Can you walk straight?”
“What are you talking about? I’m walking perfectly straight.”
Jinguji-shochou looked up at me and gave me a vacant stare.
—Wow, this was bad. She was completely drunk. She couldn’t even speak clearly.
When we reached the station and arrived at the ticket gates, as soon as I removed my hands from her shoulders, her body suddenly became unsteady. I quickly supported her once more as she almost fell. Shochou regained her balance, managing not to fall, and I felt relieved.
“Are you okay?”
“What?”
“What do you mean ‘what’… Can you walk straight?”
“What are you talking about? I’m walking perfectly straight.”
—Ah, déjà vu.
We were having exactly the same conversation as before. Was this a comedy routine?
—Wait, did Shochou seriously think she was walking straight? Even though she was swaying this much… This was really bad.
Shochou fumbled in her bag and took out her train pass case. I was strangely impressed that even while drunk and unsteady, she still managed to remember this.
Fearfully, I let go of her again thinking she might be okay now, but again her body tilted to the side, and she let out a sultry sound.
“Ahh…”
Oh no! Jinguji-shochou was going to fall! I hurriedly supported her once again.
It was too dangerous to let her ride the train alone like this. If Jinguji-shochou were to fall onto the tracks, I would regret it for the rest of my life. I had no choice. I’d escort her at least to her nearest station.
With that thought, I quickly removed just one hand from Shochou’s shoulder and took my wallet out from my suit’s inner pocket. My wallet contained a pre-charged transit IC card, so we could pass through the ticket gate right away.
And so I went through the ticket gate with Shochou and boarded the train.
After getting off the train one station away, I supported her as she walked with an unsteady gait, passing through the ticket gate and exiting the station building. I’d heard that Shochou’s home was very close to the station. Should I escort her all the way home?
However—I hesitated.
Even if we were boss and subordinate, was it okay to go to the home of a drunk single woman? But I was also worried about letting her go home alone…
Stopping momentarily just outside the station building, I peered at Shochou’s face and asked, “Shochou, are you okay? Should I walk you home…?”
Jinguji-shochou, who had been looking down until then, raised her face and slowly turned to face me standing beside her. Her face was still bright red, and she was also breathing a bit heavily, looking like she was in pain.
Honoka and Ruka had said that no matter how drunk Shochou got, she always managed to get home on her own, so I thought she’d be fine… But seeing her like this, I was definitely a bit worried.
If Shochou said “please take me home”… Then I should definitely escort her home.
Her eyes were moist as she looked at me. She seemed to be suffering from the alcohol, but Shochou really was beautiful.
She slowly opened her mouth—
“Uuugh… I feel sick… I can’t walk…”
—Huh…?
Shochou’s slurred speech was incredibly cute, but when someone said that they felt sick, I couldn’t just find it endearing.
“What? Are you going to throw up?!”
“I don’t know… Ah, I’ll rest over there…”
I looked in the direction Shochou was pointing at. Next to the station’s rotary was a small plaza surrounded by planters, with a lone bench placed there.
“O-Okay. Let’s rest for now.”
I supported her shoulders and moved to the bench, then I slowly helped her sit down, and I sat beside her.
“Are you okay?”
“I think I’ll feel better if I rest a bit…”
After saying that, Shochou closed her eyes, lowered her head, and remained still. She was probably trying to fight off the nausea. I watched over her from the side.
After a while, she seemed to doze off, and her head began swaying slowly back and forth like a rocking boat.
And then—
Shochou’s body tilted toward me. She rested her head on my left arm and began breathing steadily in her sleep.
Wow… what should I do…
—Well, there was nothing I could do. I guess I’d let her rest here for a while.
In the late-night station plaza, feeling the weight and warmth of Jinguji-shochou’s head on my upper arm, I gazed at her sleeping face for a while.
