ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
We chatted for a bit after dinner before calling it a night. By the time I realized it, it had already gotten quite late, so I decided to walk Shizuku to the station. However, once we left the house, the flow of conversation between us came to a sudden stop. Shizuku occasionally glanced at me from the corner of her eyes but aside from that, she didn’t show any signs of actually going to speak to me, which was very unusual of her. I didn’t mind the silence, but I could feel something was off. This made me feel a bit uncomfortable. So, just before we reached a more crowded area, I decided to ask her.
“Shizuku, is there something you want to say to me?”
“Huh?! Wh-Why?! Why all of a sudden?!”
“No, it’s just… You’ve been glancing at me every now and then. Plus, you’ve been unusually quiet with me since a while ago. I thought maybe something was on your mind.”
Then, Shizuku’s face turned a bit red. She began opening and closing her mouth repeatedly, as if she was struggling to find the right words to say. After hesitating for several times, she seemed to give up and finally spoke.
“…Of course you’d notice. Did you hate it?”
“No. Not at all. I just thought it was unusual for you to act like that. That’s all.”
I peered into Shizuku’s face as I said that and she quickly averted her gaze from me.
Yeah. She’s definitely hiding something.
Although I knew that for certain, but I pushed the accusation to the back of my head and turned my gaze forward. Soon after, Shizuku finally asked me.
“…Aren’t you going to ask me why?”
She sounded genuinely confused.
“No. If you don’t want to say it, then it must be something that you find hard to talk about. I’m not going to force you to say it.”
“I see… Suou-kun, you really know how to take a step back even at times like this, huh? It’s just like you.”
“You don’t look like you’re beating yourself with your own thoughts, so I thought I could let you be.”
I had to admit, I was aware I sounded a bit cold, but still. I thought this was the better option than forcing Shizuku to say it when she wasn’t ready yet. That was what I thought, but Shizuku was still staring at me, like she wanted to say something. However, since she didn’t say it in her own words, we just continued walking in silence, side by side. Silence ensued between us and just as we were about to reach the mainstreet near the station…
“Suou-kun.”
She called my name. Judging from the tone of her voice, it seemed she had made up her mind. I turned to face her, but before I could fully turn around, she already pressed my face with both hands, forcing me to face her. I had seen this scenery before, but unlike at that time, Shizuku was donned in makeup. She looked even more beautiful and my whole field of vision was filled with the sight of Shizuku’s beautiful eyes. I found myself drawn to her crystal blue eyes.
Suddenly, my heart started beating wildly. My pulse quickened to the point I was afraid my heart was going to burst out of control. I had the illusion that the sound of my heartbeat might get transmitted through Shizuku’s palms on my face, which felt a bit cold against my flushed cheek.
“I will only say it once, so listen carefully.”
“O-Okay.”
The core of my body grew heated. Then, after a brief pause, Shizuku flashed me a beaming smile.
“Suou-kun, right now… You’re like, super cool!”
“Huh…?”
My thoughts froze still. Before I could say anything in return, Shizuku’s palms slipped away from my cheeks. Without missing a beat, she ran off toward the station.
“I’m good here! You can head back now! Thanks a lot for everything today!”
Waving her hand excitedly, Shizuku turned around only to looked back at me again.
“Oh! And make sure you come dressed like you normally do next week!”
And with that, Shizuku disappeared toward the station. I stood there, dazed. I didn’t know how long I stood there. Whether it was a few seconds or a few minutes. I kept standing there even after she was completely gone from my sight.
“….Haa… The heck with that?”
Once my heartbeat finally calmed down, I crouched down and covered my face with one hand.
“…Darn it. That was a foul play.”
After she said something like that, there was no way I could remain oblivious of it. I thought I had known all along that Shizuku was cute, but an attack with that level of destructive power made me realize how much I had underestimated Shizuku. Shizuku didn’t have any boyfriend right now and precisely because of that…
“I’m starting to get the wrong idea…”
I could still feel the warmth of Shizuku’s touch on my cheek. In an effort to distract myself, I let out a deep breath, exhaling all the air from my lungs.
* * *
I know he’s only seeing me as nothing but a friend.
His kindness, his consideration of never forcing himself and staying at a safe distance, it all made Shizuku happy but at the same time, also left Shizuku feeling frustrated.
“…I said it. I really said it.”
Shizuku murmured quietly under her breath as she pressed her head against the train door. The words she had said to him earlier definitely came from her heart. It was her true feelings. She never expected she’d get so captivated by him just from seeing him with his hair styled.
Suou-kun… He probably thought I was weird… But! I couldn’t help it!!! I never expected he’d look that cool!
“Geez… That was a foul play, Suou-kun…”
She said again in a hushed voice. The reason she was conscious of him was definitely not because of his appearance. It was his kindness, the way he acted with her in mind and the soft smile he would give her when they were eating that had captured Shizuku’s heart. When she saw the reflection of her face at the train window in front of her, she saw her face was as red as a ripe apple. She then remembered. When she had readied her heart and touched Gakuto’s voice in sheer desperation, his face was also flushed, though not as red as hers.
“I wonder if Suou-kun is conscious of me too…”
Shizuku sincerely hoped he did and at the same time, she found herself slipping into a state of self-loathing. It was because of the thought that crossed her mind.
She didn’t want anyone else to know just how cool Suou-kun actually was.
“Noooo… I didn’t know I was this cunning…”
As she let out a soft sigh, the train came to a stop. The doors opened and she decided to step off onto the platform and started walking slowly to her home.
