Chapter 5: The Hungry Gyaru Returning the Favor

After school, I obediently followed Kushina’s command and headed to the station. The current time was 17:50. There was still some time before our meeting time, but since I had nothing else to do, I decided to arrive a bit early. 

…But still, why 6 o’clock?

Even if Kushina wanted us to meet up, we could meet up at a much earlier time. I wanted to ask her the reason, but ever since lunchtime, I hadn’t been able to talk with Kushina at all. She quickly left the classroom in a hurry right after school ended. Hence why, I was left in the dark as to why she wanted us to meet at precisely 6 o’clock.

Well, I don’t have anything better to do anyway. This is a good enough reason to kill time on something more productive than lazing around. 

I thought to myself when I saw a blonde girl walking towards me. Just as expected, she stood out no matter where she was. Even within the dim light, I could tell right away that it was Kushina. 

I raised my hand lightly, hoping she’d notice me, but she was already running towards me with a joyful expression, just a moment before I could raise my hand to get her attention. 

“Suou-kun! Thank you for waiting! Did you wait long?”

“No, not really.”

“You should’ve said ‘I just got here myself!'”

She lightly nudged me in the side with her elbow. She was laughing, so it seemed she wasn’t really mad at me, but… 

If there’s a next time, I will need to choose my response more carefully.

“Ah, right. Suou-kun, look, look!”

Kushina said as she pulled out her smartphone from her pocket.

“Tada! My new phone! I bought a new one just now!”

“…Ah, right. Now that you mention it, you did say you were going to get a new phone today. That’s great. I’m glad you can get a new phone this fast.”

So that was the reason why she scheduled our meeting at this time. She had to stop by the phone shop beforehand. I finally understood the reason now.

“So? What are we going to do now?”

I asked, but for some reason, Kushina sighed and gave me a clear side-eye.

“…What is it?”

“Suou-kun… You really don’t pay any attention to things you’re not interested in, huh? I already said it during lunch, but I’m serious now. You really need to do something about that cold attitude of yours… But well, I guess this side of you is what makes you… You. It’s actually a good thing, I guess.”

She shrugged, seemingly exasperated before she started walking into the station. 

“Well then, let’s go! Suou-kun!”

“Go? Go where exactly…?”

“It’s a secret! You will know when we get there!”

Kushina grinned mischievously as she pulled me along.

“Sorry to keep you waiting. Here’s your order of the Triple Impact Hamburger!”

“Whoa… Amazing…”

With a wry smile on her face, the waitress placed a heavy looking hamburg set on a sizzling hot iron plate in front of us. This hamburg set was no ordinary hamburg set. As its name suggested, it consisted of three hamburg patties, each weighing 400 grams. Each set was topped with a fried egg, cheese and grated daikon. The sheer size of the hamburg patty made the side dishes—mixed vegetables, french fries, daikon salad, and onion soup—look almost cute in comparison. That being said, even the side dishes were on the larger side. To top it all off, the hamburg set came with a mountain of rice. It was truly a mountain of rice. Just looking at it was enough to make any ordinary man feel full. 

Kushina had brought me to a hamburg specialized restaurant a few stations away. This restaurant was located in the busy downtown area. It turned out that she wanted to treat me to dinner as a thank-you for the lunch and the ramen on Saturday.

I had my suspicions when I looked at the menu, but it seemed this restaurant was famous for its large servings. There were numerous autographs on the wall at the back of the shop. Those autographs were probably from famous people in the competitive eating world. 

“Alright! It’s finally here!~ Let’s eat, let’s eat!~”

And then, there was the same exact dish right in front of Kishina, who was sitting across from me. This must be the reason why the waitress from earlier had a wry smile on her face. She was in disbelief, rightfully so. 

I mean, it’s one thing for me, but there’s no way a delicate girl like Kushina can finish a meal that weighs almost two kilograms in total. 

I would probably have the same reaction as the waitress from before if I were to see frail-looking high school boys and girls trying to tackle the eating challenge at my part-time job. 

“Thank you for the food.”

Kushina clasped her hands together before she poured the sauce from a small stainless container all over her hamburg steak. Then, she immediately took a bite of her hamburg steak. 

“Mmmh!~ So good! This is the best!~”

Her face lit up with a smile full of bliss. Watching her eat joyfully made me feel all warm inside. 

“Ah, Suou-kun. No need to hold back. Eat as much as you want. It’s my treat today.”

“..Ri-Right.”

Encouraged by Kushina, I followed her lead. I poured the sauce all over my hamburg steak and cut them into bite-sized pieces and…

“Delicious.”

In an instant, the meaty richness of the beef patty filled my mouth, combined with the mildly sweet and salty flavor of the sauce that coated the hamburg. The sauce enhanced the taste even further, making me crave for more and more. I couldn’t stop myself from shoving a mouthful of rice into my mouth next. Seeing my reaction, Kushina smiled proudly at herself. 

“I know, right?~ It’s super good, isn’t it?”

“Yeah. It’s really delicious. I’m not even kidding. This is really delicious. I can see why this place has all those autographs up.”

That being said, aside from a few competitive eaters who showed up on TV, I didn’t recognize most of the names there. 

“…But, why did you tell me to get this ridiculously big set too?”

I asked Kushina again as I continued eating. After all, I didn’t choose this set meal myself. Kushina was the one who practically urged me to get it, saying things like,”Suou-kun,let’s get this together. Okay? Okay?????” so, I ended up ordering the same thing as her. 

I had tried to ask why she insisted on making me order it when we were ordering, but she just brushed it off, saying, “Don’t worry about it,” even though she was the one who forced it on me. 

“I mean, ordinary people won’t be able to finish this.”

“Hmmm… Well, you’re right. But Suou-kun, you can finish it, right?”

“…What makes you so sure about that?”

“Your lunch box. Just looking at it, anyone could tell the owner of that lunch box is a big eater. You’re not even in a sports club, but that’s your ordinary serving size? It’s pretty unusual for people to eat that much for lunch, you know?”

She was right on the money. Her keen observation left me momentarily speechless. Trying to say I ate the average amount of food like other people would’ve been pointless at this point. 

“So? I’m right, right? You can eat a lot, right?”

“…Well, more or less.”

Since I didn’t have any reason to hide it, I decided to nod honestly. It might seem odd to say this myself, but while I wasn’t at the level of a competitive eater, but I could eat a lot. That lunch was my usual portion, but if I wanted to, I could eat even more. In fact, I could finish the eating challenge at my part-time job with ease. I was the one who determined the portion size and time limit after trying it myself after all. So… Yeah. I could definitely devour this hamburg set easily. 

“See, I knew it!”

“But that doesn’t mean we had to get the same thing—”

“There is! Absolutely, there is!”

Kushina quickly countered before I could finish speaking.

“I mean, don’t you want to eat delicious food together? Especially with someone who can eat just as much as you!”

“Hmm… I guess you have a point there.”

“That’s right… Besides, you also shared your lunch with me, remember? It was so good that I ended up finishing all your side dishes. It was only after I finished everything that I realized you only had white rice left… So, I wanted to make up for it. 

Kushina explained, her voice gradually becoming more apologetic as she went on. I couldn’t stop myself from laughing out loud at that. 

“Oh? So you were worried about that?”

“Of course! It’s a big deal! I have to be worried about it! Not having side dishes is a serious problem!”

“…Well, yeah, I guess you have a point.”

Thinking back, I could understand her feelings. Eating two bowls of plain rice without any side dishes was a bit hard indeed. 

“But still, I did that out of my own accord. Seeing you enjoy the meal I made made it all worth it. So, relax. It wasn’t a big deal.”

I said with a smile and Kushina’s eyes widened as she stared at me.

“Hm? What’s wrong?”

“Ah… No… It’s just… Your face looks pretty cute when you smile… That’s all.”

“…Hey, I think you need to get your eyes checked too.”

“How rude! If you keep saying stuff like that, I’ll take one of your hamburg steaks!”

“My bad, I’m sorry. Please, forgive me.”

Since Kushina was treating me, I really couldn’t complain if she were to actually take one of my hamburg steak. Realizing my comment was going a bit out of line, I quickly apologized. 

“Geez. I was just joking though.”

Kushina said with a smile. She then continued on. 

“I’m not going to take anything from your plate. I brought you here because I wanted you to enjoy this delicious food. If you feel guilty, then make sure you savor every bite!”

“Alright. I’ll be sure to do that.”

With that, I picked up my chopsticks and reached for another bite of the remaining pile of hamburg steak.
