“I’m really looking forward to eating your cooking for dinner tonight, Suou-kun!”
Shizuku said cheerfully as we were nearing the house. Starting today, she’d be staying for dinner on the condition that I didn’t have a part-time job in the evening.
“I won’t make as much as I did for lunch, though. Is that okay?”
“Totally fine! Actually, if you always cook that much, I will end up gaining weight.”
Shizuku’s soft laugh made me smile in return.
“True. You’re right about that.”
As a big eater myself, I could relate with her. I didn’t always eat a huge portion of food for every meal. I kept track of my daily calorie intake and adjusted my meals accordingly to control both food costs and maintain my current weight. That being said, I was still eating more than the average person did.
I was thinking about my food plan when Shizuku asked me something gingerly.
“…By the way, Suou-kun…. I know it’s a bit late to be asking you this now, but are you sure it’s okay for me to have dinner at your place tonight?”
“Yeah. It’s better than you eating alone at home, right?”
“Well, that’s true, but still…”
“Then, you don’t need to hold back. My older sister and Ichika will be happy to have you over and besides, having you eating my food makes it more worthwhile for me to cook.”
I said as I stepped inside the house. The moment we entered, I noticed a pair of neatly placed pump shoes by the entrance. These weren’t my older sister’s. The instant I saw them, I had the sudden urge to look up at the ceiling and sigh.
“…Oh, great. Just my luck.”
“What’s wrong, Suou-kun?”
“Ah, it’s just… Looks like things are going to get a bit complicated. I’m sorry in advance, Shizuku.”
I glanced at Shizuku, who blinked at me in confusion, before I stepped further into the house. Feeling a growing sense of dread, I quickened my pace towards the living room.
“Shizuku, sorry, but could you wait here for a moment?”
“O-Okay… I don’t mind…”
“Thanks and once again, sorry about this.”
After apologizing again, I opened the door to the room.”
“Oh my. Welcome back. You’re back earlier than I expected.”
A woman in a suit said while sipping her coffee elegantly. This woman had black hair, just like my older sister. However, her whole demeanor was far more elegant than my older sister.
Ah, I knew it. I knew it’s going to end up like this…
She was smiling calmly, like nothing was out of the ordinary. Seeing that smile, I couldn’t stop myself from asking her a question.
“Huh? Why are you here though?”
“Why, you ask? How cruel… I already told Mio-chan during our phone call this morning that I’d be coming back around evening… Oh? Perhaps you didn’t hear about my arrival from Mio-chan?”
“I didn’t and don’t just tell Big Sis only. You know there’s a big chance that she won’t relay that information to Ichika or me.”
“You’re right. I always forgot how similar she is to Kuuga-san. They both can be so careless at times. Truly, what a blunder on my part.”
The woman spoke with a tone of feigned regret, accompanied by a troubled expression that didn’t feel genuine in the slightest. Her attitude alone was enough to confirm my suspicion: she had knowingly let my older sister keep this information away from me.
While sighing, I asked her another question.
“By the way, where are Big Sis and Ichika?”
“Mio-chan and Chii-chan? They went to the supermarket together to do some shopping. But forget about them. Gakkun… Let me ask you this question. How long do you plan on keeping your friend waiting outside the room? Leaving them out like that even though you were the one who invited them over is a rude thing to do, you know.”
“Well, I couldn’t exactly let her in with you here.”
Of course she already knew about Shizuku. Just as I expected. Not that I had planned on hiding anything from her, especially after this. After I prepared my resolution, I gestured for Shizuku to come in from where she was waiting outside.
“Shizuku, come here for a moment.”
“I can come in now?”
“Yeah, or to be precise… This is where things are going to get rocky… Anyway, just come with me first.”
Though puzzled by my hesitant tone, Shizuku obediently followed me into the living room. The moment she stepped inside, the woman rose from her chair and gave a deep bow to Shizuku.
“You must be Shizuku-san. Thank you for always looking after our Gakuto.”
“Huh? A-Ah… Ye-Yes. I’m the one who should be saying thank you. Suou-kun has been a great help to me.”
Shizuku replied by bowing slightly in return. Then, with a hint of nervousness in her voice and demeanor, Shizuku gingerly asked.
“U-Ummm… I’m sorry if I’m wrong, but are you Suou-kun’s other older sister…?”
In response to that question, the woman gave Shizuku a warm and gentle smile.
“My, my, what a lovely thing to say. Thank you for your kind words, but… You see, Gakuto only has two sisters.”
“Huh? Then, that means…”
“Indeed. I’m Gakuto’s mother.”
The room instantly enveloped in silence. I glanced at Shizuku and her eyes were wide open. Her expression turned completely blank from shock. Then, after a good few seconds of processing the information, her eyes opened even wider and she exclaimed.
“Suou-kun’s mother? But you look so young!!”
