Chapter 44: The Hungry Gyaru and Summer Vacation Plans

This was the second time Shizuku had finished a huge portion of food at my home. But still, the sight of a delicate girl like her easily devouring such a large amount of food still left a strong impact on my older sister and Ichika. Both of them were staring alternately at the empty plate and Shizuku with their eyes wide open. The plate was completely wiped clean, not a single grain of rice was left behind. 

“I already knew about your big appetite, but wow. You can really eat a lot, huh?’

“Shizuku-oneechan, you’re so amazing..!”

In response to that, Shizuku chuckled happily. 

“Ehehehe~ Well, it’s thanks to Suou-kun! Anything he makes tastes super delicious! I could eat it forever!”

“Ah, so you can still eat more, huh…?”

“Yes!”

She said excitedly as she reached for a glass of lassi. Yes. I had made lassi to enhance the authentic feeling of the curry. I made it when I was cooking the curry. Indeed, the lassi was a perfect match for the curry. 

“Mmh! So delish!~ This yogurt drink tastes so refreshing! Ahh~ This is the best!”

“It’s called lassi. Well, I’m glad to know it suits your palate.”

I smiled and Shizuku quickly averted her gaze, seemingly a bit embarrassed. 

“…Shizuku-oneechan, your face is red. What’s wrong?”

“Nope! Nothing’s wrong!”

However, she immediately turned her gaze back to me and asked me a question.”

“By the way, have you decided what you’re going to do during summer vacation, Suou-kun?”

“…What a pretty abrupt change of topic.”

“Well, well~ I just realized I hadn’t asked you that question yet~”

With a small chuckle, Shizuku then continued on. 

“…So? Any plans yet?”

Plans for summer vacation, huh… As of now, my plans are…

“Going to my part-time job, cooking, competitive eating, training my muscles and… That’s about it.”

The moment I finished speaking, a tangible silence ensued between me and Shizuku.

Eh? What’s with this mood…?

My older sister, who was nearby, slapped her forehead with her own hands, looking obviously exasperated. As for Shizuku, she was blinking her blue eyes repeatedly, staring at me for a moment before opening her mouth awkwardly. 

“Suou-kun… Umm… A-Are you… For real?”

“Hm? Yeah. Those are my plans for real.”

“Ah… I-I see… U-Umm… Okay…”

“Umm… If there’s something you want to say, then please say it. It’s worse to see you hold back. It feels more awkward like that.”

It’s better for me if she shows her shock bluntly, rather than holding back.

I thought to myself and my older sister let out a big sigh.

“Gaku has always been like this. He doesn’t care about other people’s opinion and being alone doesn’t bother him in the slightest. So he’s always spending his summer vacation like this. So boring, right? It pains me to see him wasting his youth like that.”

“Don’t call it boring. Besides, it’s up to me how I spend my time.”

I answered curtly and my older sister slammed both hands down on the table.

“Nope! This is definitely not okay!”

She stood up with more force than needed and then, she fired back at me. 

“I mean, sure, it’s your life and you’re free to live your life. I can’t say anything against that, but!! Just imagine! If one of Ichika’s friends sees your dull, lifeless lifestyle and thinks,’Wow, Ichika-chan’s older brother is a loner…” just imagine what will happen to Ichika! She will be the one embarrassed on your behalf!”

“No, no… That’s an exaggeration. There’s no way that’s going to happen.”

“Well, yeah. I kinda exaggerated it a bit just now.”

“Oi.”

“But still, it’s better for Ichika to hear ‘Wow, Ichika! Your big brother is so cool!’ than for her to hear ‘Euw, Ichika, your big brother is so lame!’ right??”

“…I guess you’re right.”

I didn’t care about how other people perceived me, but if my lifestyle could affect Ichika’s reputation… Of course that was a whole different story. At the very least, as a big brother, I didn’t want to drag my little sister down. 

“Right?! If Ichika is going to introduce her big brother to her friends, of course she’d prefer to have a cool big brother to introduce, right?!”

My older sister then glanced at Ichika. 

“Right, Ichika?”

Ichika actually took a moment to think before nodding.

“…Yeah. If Gaku-nii gets praised, I’d be happy too.”

“See?!”

Somehow, I feel like she’s skillfully steering this conversation into a certain direction… 

Though I felt a bit irritated because I felt like I was dancing in the palm of her hand, but I didn’t have any other choice but to go along with it. 

“…Big Sis, I get what you’re trying to say, but what do you want me to do? Even if you tell me to come up with some exciting summer plans, I can’t possibly do it on my own.”

“Don’t worry. I’ve got an idea.”

“Huh? Really? It’s rare for you to already have a plan in mind.”

“Don’t say it’s rare. I’m always thinking ahead, you know.”

With that, my older sister turned to Shizuku. She clasped her hands together and bowed her head at Shizuku. 

“Sorry, Shizuku-chan! If you’ve got any free time this summer, could you please take this useless little brother of mine out?! Please take him to go have fun somewhere?!”

“So your plan is to dump it all on Shizuku?!”

“But, it’s not like you have any friends other than Shizuku-chan here.”

“Ugh…”

Darn it, she’s hitting me right where it hurts. I can’t argue back if she put it like that…!

“You can make him carry your stuff or just use him however you like! Just, please! I’m begging you, please take him out!”

“Okay! Leave it to me!”

An immediate reply. As soon as she said that, Shizuku pulled out her phone and started fiddling with it. 

“And so… Suou-kun, are you free at the end of the month or at the beginning of the next month?”

“…Are you sure? I mean, inviting me?”

“Of course! I was already thinking maybe it’d be fun to hang out with you if our schedules lined up. Mio-oneesan’s suggestion just now couldn’t come at a better timing! A total god-tier timing! Oh, there will be other people too though. Are you okay with that?”

“I mean, as long as they’re fine with me tagging along then I don’t mind.”

“It’ll be fine, it’ll be fine! It’s an instant yes if it’s you, Suou-kun! But yeah, I will double-check with them first, so you can check your schedule too, okay?”

“… Got it.”

After I gave her my answer, I left the room and headed to my own room to grab my shift schedule. Upon returning to the living room, I quickly told Shizuku my days off. 

“For now… I’m free on the 29th, 30th, 1sst and 3rd.”

“The 30th then! Great! I’m so glad it doesn’t overlap with your work schedule. Oh! I got confirmation on my end too. They said it’s totally fine for you to join!”

Shizuku exclaimed while giving me a cheerful thumbs-up. She was absolutely beaming. 

“So, Suou-kun, you’ll be coming to the pool with us on the 30th!”

“The pool, huh. Alright. I see, the pool, huh…”

I couldn’t help but tilt my head back and stare at the ceiling.

Darn it. I should’ve asked where they’re going first. 

Noticing my reaction, Shizuku looked at me with a slightly guilty expression on her face. 

“…Huh? Do you not like the pools?”

“Well,  it’s not that I hate them or anything, but—”

“Actually~ Gaku is an extremely bad swimmer~”

“…Oi, you don’t need to say that to her.”

“No, no, you’re going to get exposed anyway. Might as well expose you now and save everyone the trouble.”

“I mean… Yeah. I guess you’re right.”

Why does she always hit me with actual solid logic at times like this…?

I was lamenting my fate in my heart when Shizuku nervously said to me. 

“Suou-kun, if you think it’s too much for you to bear, it’s okay if you say no, okay? You don’t need to force yourself. We’re still in the planning stage anyway, so you can back out anytime you want.”

“Shizuku…”

Well, but it doesn’t feel right to turn them down at this point. 

“No, no. You already invited me, so I will take you up on the offer. It’s only right for me to do so.”

“Huh? Really? I mean, you’re not forcing yourself, are you?”

“Not at all. Even if I can’t swim, I can still have fun somehow anyway.”

If Shizuku is going to the pool with her other friends, then they are probably heading to a city pool. In that case, there are likely spaces for eating or maybe shallow pools to hang out in. In the worst-case scenario, I can just watch over everyone’s stuff and chill by the poolside.

I was pondering all my options when…

“Yay!!”

Shizuku beamed, looking absolutely thrilled.
