ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
The next morning, I headed to Yamachi’s classroom before the homeroom started. Sure enough, he was surrounded by a group of girls.
“Yamachi-kun, the inter-high is in two weeks, right? Good luck! You’re going to become a regular player, right?!”
“Maybe I should get your autograph now??”
“Yamachi-kun, if you do well at the inter-high, I will give you a reward~”
Ever since he and Shizuku broke up, the number of girls flocking to Yamachi had increased. Well, it wasn’t a surprise. Their greatest and most formidable obstacle—Kushina Shizuku—was no longer in the picture. Yamachi was a handsome guy and he was the future ace of the soccer club. It was only natural for girls to aim for him.
Not that he’s actually single or that they have any real chance though.
Suppressing the irritation that rose just from looking at his face, I stepped into the classroom. Brushing past desks and the wary stares from the surrounding students, I headed straight toward Yamachi and opened my mouth to speak to him.
“—Yamachi.”
“…Huh?”
He growled, his voice was tinged with anger. However, the moment he looked into my eyes…
“You’re…?!”
He finally realized who I was. An expression of anxiety flickered across his face for a second.
“There’s something I want to talk to you about. Can you spare me some time after school?”
“Huh? I don’t get it. Who will just nods and says, ‘Sure, okay,’ when someone springs that on them—”
“I see. You leave me with no other choice. I guess I will just—”
I said while reaching into my pocket and pulled out my phone.
“…Tch. So annoying.”
Yamachi clicked his tongue in irritation, but he reluctantly agreed to meet me after school. This unexpected reaction seemed to make the surrounding students confused, but with just one word from Yamachi, the awkward mood vanished as if it was never there in the first place.
“Then, after school, at the rooftop of the third building. If you don’t show up, you know what’ll happen, right?”
Yamachi glared at me. He didn’t say anything, but his eyes were burning with hostility. The stares from the surrounding students weren’t much different from him too.
I guess I’m the villain to them. Well, I’m about to do something pretty villainous anyway, so it’s okay.
I thought to myself as I turned on my heel. Since I had said what I had to say, I didn’t have any other reason to linger any longer.
…And that’s fine. I’m not the hero type anyway.
I was only trying to do what I could for those close to me. Hence why, I would put an end to everything today, no matter how dirty I had to get.
Gathering my resolve once more, I quickly walked back to my own classroom.
“Suou, how did it go?”
The first to speak to me after I sat on my chair was Miura. From behind her, Sasamoto, Suzuki and Shizuku peeked out cautiously.
“I managed to get him to agree to meet me. All that’s left is to talk with him after school.”
“….So it’s finally happening. But seriously, why do you bother orchestrating a meeting with him after school? Wouldn’t it be more efficient if you were to tell everyone the truth already? We could be your witnesses and I’m pretty sure our testimony will make your proof credible enough.”
Miura asked me a good question. It was a very logical one. Now that I had made up my mind to expose him, I really didn’t have any reason to hesitate, but…
“There’s one thing I need to confirm first. Only after that will I take action against him.”
“Is it… more important than clearing Shizuku’s name as soon as possible?”
“Not more important, but… It’s just as important.”
Glancing at Shizuku, I gave her a firm nod. Yesterday, I told her that I didn’t care about her past with Yamachi, but still… I had to know.
So she can move forward.
Shizuku stared at me, looking confused. However, I decided to keep the last part to myself.

The school was finally over. After I finished the final checks with Shizuku and the others, I was about to leave the classroom when…
“Suou-kun.”
Shizuku called out to me, stopping me in my tracks. I turned around and she had a somber smile on her face.
“Be careful.”
“…Sure thing.”
I responded with a single wave of my hand and finally left the classroom. That simple gesture from Shizuku made my resolve to get this done and over with grew even stronger. I headed straight for the stairs leading to the rooftop of the third building. It didn’t take long for me to arrive at my destination, but there was no one around. It seemed Yamachi hadn’t arrived yet. So, I decided to wait in front of the door for now. The sunlight streaming through the small window in the door was tinted with the hues of the setting sun. The hallway of the school was cast in its gentle shadow. It didn’t take long for Yamachi to show up at the door where I was waiting.
“…So, you actually came, just like you promised.”
“Tch, you sure have the nerve to say that after threatening me. So? What’s this about? Spit it out already—I’ve got practice to get to.”
Yamachi said, looking obviously disgruntled. I didn’t have any intention to waste my time having idle talk with him either, so I cut straight to the point.
“Stop the rumors about Kushina.”
“Huh? Why the hell should I do that? Stupid gossip like that, just leave it alone and it will die down on its own.”
“The fact that the rumors have spread so far is because you ignored those remarks on purpose. The rumor is your responsibility to fix.”
“Are you trying to accuse me of something I never did? If you ask me, I think the rumors are spreading because of you. You know, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. You’re the smoke.”
Yamachi sneered with a mocking laugh. The way he was being openly disrespectful at me sparked a glint of anger within me, but I found myself more exasperated than enraged. After all, I had expected he would act like this.
“…Well, I won’t deny it. I guess it’s true my existence might add spice to the noise.”
“Exactly. Then this conversation is over—”
“But, that’s a whole different issue entirely. Don’t try to dodge your own sin with lame excuses.”
I took out my phone and continued.
“Did you forget? I have evidence of your sin.”
I showed him the video of him trying to drag Shizuku into a hotel. As soon as he saw it, Yamachi’s face stiffened.
“If you swear to stop the rumors from spreading and actually follow through on your promise, I won’t spread this video. But if you refuse or try to lie your way out of it, I’ll share it immediately.”
Yamachi glared at me. His face was twisting in anger and his fists were clenched tightly.
“…That said, I’m not that heartless. If you agree to my one more condition, I might consider deleting the video file altogether.”
His eyes widened instantly.
Got him.
“And? What’s your other condition?”
“I want you to tell me everything. Why did you help Kushina when she didn’t have any friends in middle school and yet, you still went on to cheat on her with Katagiri. I want you to explain your reason to me.”
“…Why the hell are you asking something like that?”
“Just out of pure curiosity. But hey, I will stop threatening you after this. It’s not a bad deal for you. No one is going to overhear us here, so you can speak freely.”
After a moment of hesitation, Yamachi finally…
“…Alright. I will tell you.”
He nodded and the corner of his lips were slowly pulled into a sinister grin.
