Chapter 2: The Hungry Gyaru’s Boyfriend’s Infidelity

I left everything to Gouda-san, the shop manager, who was busy staring at his laptop in the office, and quickly headed home. Then, I noticed a familiar couple on my way back. I was walking through the love hotel district, just outside the bustling downtown area. The love hotel district was a shortcut to my house, but I still felt a bit awkward passing through this area since I was still a minor. Well, I didn’t have any plan to do anything here anyway. I only wanted to get home quicker. So, I decided to walk down this path without thinking too much about it. 

While justifying my own choice, I saw someone I knew coming out from a love hotel in front of me. I immediately hid behind a nearby corner.

“That’s…”

It was a couple. A boy and a girl with their arms linked together. I knew who they were. The girl was Rika Katagiri, a girl from the same grade as me, known for beauty. She was as popular as Kushina. The boy was Takashi Yamachi, who was known as the soccer club’s promising ace and he was also… Kushina’s boyfriend.

Did they just come out of a love hotel together…? Why…? No, wait, wait. He’s definitely cheating on Kushina, isn’t he? 

I gulped nervously. Even I, someone who was known to be a loner, knew about Kushina and Yamachi. The two of them were very popular. I knew they were dating each other. In fact, I heard they had been dating since middle school. They were known as the perfect couple. Both of them were good looking and they looked happy together. However, the one standing next to Yamachi wasn’t Kushina, but Katagiri. Moreover, Yamachi and Katagiri were practically glued together. It was clear to see what they had been doing in that love hotel. I was shocked. After all, Katagiri gave me the impression of the pure beauty type. She didn’t appear to be someone who would do something as shrewd as this. 

Geez. You really can’t judge someone by their cover, huh? Both in good ways and bad ways… 

“Ah, look, look, Taa-kun. The rain has stopped.”

“Oh, lucky us~ When it started pouring, I didn’t have any umbrella with me. I was wondering what to do, but luckily, the rain has stopped. Well, I got to have a fun time with Rika, so all’s good.”

“Geez~ Taa-kun..!”

…Taa-kun, she said. The two of them seemed pretty close. I knew I shouldn’t do this, but I couldn’t stop myself from eavesdropping on their conversation while staying hidden in the corner. At the same time, I took out my smartphone to record a video of the two of them in secret. Recording someone in secret was not a good thing. If I get caught, things would get super troublesome for me and there was no benefit for me in playing detective like this. But still, after seeing Kushina weeping by herself like that… I felt the need to get proof of her boyfriend’s infidelity, whether this infidelity was the reason behind her tears or not.

“What is it?”

“Your official girlfriend. You’re still ignoring her messages, right?”

“Oh, Shizuku… Well, it’s fine. I don’t know why, but she suddenly canceled our date at the last minute. I can just message her back after I get back home.”

Just from that exchange alone, I could know for certain that the two of them had been doing it behind Kushina. Not to mention, Yamachi looked completely infatuated with Katagiri. The moment I realized that, I felt so irritated at them, even though their relationships didn’t have anything to do with me. I was so disgusted at Yamachi and Katagiri.

“Anyway, I just want to focus on my beloved Rika right now. Since my date with that girl got canceled, I get to spend more time with my beloved Rika instead.”

“Geez~ Taa-kun~ Then… How about if we continue the rest at home?”

“Sure. There’s no one’s home at your place today, right?”

“Yeah. No one’s coming back until late tonight.”

The two of them were walking toward my direction, chatting happily about something. I quickly turned around to avoid being seen, but I kept my camera going, pointing it behind me. My breath hitched and my heart raced. Their voices passed by me. Luckily the two of them were so absorbed in each other, so they didn’t pay any attention to their surroundings. After watching them disappear toward the direction of the station, I continued walking home and began sorting through the information I had gathered in my head. 

First of all, Yamachi wasn’t just cheating on Kushina. He had gone all the way with Katagiri. Based on their conversation, Kushina probably didn’t know about the infidelity.

Second, the two of them had entered the hotel to escape the sudden rain and most probably, they had done what couples normally do inside the love hotel. Moreover, based on their conversation, it seemed this wasn’t their first time nor their last. The two of them seemed really close, so this wasn’t something they did on a whim. The affair must have already happened long before today. 

“…Tch. How disgusting.”

And one more thing. Originally, Kushina and Yamachi were supposed to go on a date, but Kushina suddenly canceled their date. However, unbeknownst to them, Kushina had actually come near this area. The fact that she had come to my part-time job looking obviously dejected and soaking wet without an umbrella meant… 

“…Don’t tell me…”

The dots connected in my mind and my feet came to a stop. 

Kushina had witnessed her boyfriend’s affair with her own eyes. The affair between Yamachi and Katagiri. In that case, it was only natural why Kushina was crying like that. But then… Why didn’t she confront them right away? I was still full of questions, but those questions could wait. I turned around and dashed back down the same path I had gone through. 

“If I hurry, I can still—”

I ran to my part-time job place with all of my might and practically burst through the door open. I looked toward the back of the shop. Fortunately, I came just in time. Kushina had just finished the challenge and had stopped the timer.

Wow. Amazing. She actually finished everything within the time limit? No, no. This is not the time to be impressed by that. 

“Kushina!”

“Hue-!? Wha-What? Suou-kun…?”

I shouted and not only did I startle Kushina, but also the other customers. No. Even the manager was shocked as well. I felt a bit bad for startling everyone, but I didn’t stop. I continued on, although I was still out of breath. 

“I came here just to say this. If you ever need someone to talk to… I’m here for you. You can come to me anytime you want. So… If there’s something you’re dealing with… Especially if you’re having a hard time… Don’t try to carry it all on your own. You can come talk to me.”

I told her everything I needed to say, then quickly left the store. I didn’t even care how strange I must have been acting. I didn’t care if that was the last interaction I ever had with her. I just wanted Kushina to know I was on her side. 

Well, I’m just doing it for my own self-satisfaction anyway, but still…

A small self-deprecating smile appeared on my face, but still, I had no regrets.
