ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
As promised, from the next day onward, I didn’t speak a single word to Kushina at school. While we still exchanged messages on LINE, we kept it minimal to avoid drawing any attention and refrained from making calls. Thanks to that, no one knew that I had been spending my time together with Kushina.
Our eyes would meet occasionally in the classroom, but neither of us did any further than that. Kushina also stopped coming to the emergency stairs during lunch breaks. As a result, I returned to eating lunch alone, just like before. Eating by myself for a few days didn’t make the food feel bland. The food still tasted as good as usual. After all, the reason why I went all the way to the emergency stairs in the third building was so I could enjoy a calm meal all by myself. There was no way my food would suddenly taste bland just because Kushina stopped barging in. In fact, I could finally enjoy my food at my own pace again. It felt nice and relaxing.
That being said… I did feel somewhat dissatisfied. Eating lunch with Kushina didn’t feel bad… It wasn’t bad, but… I pushed those unnecessary thoughts aside and made it through the week somehow.
And so, the planned day finally arrived. On a Sunday afternoon, I waited for Kushina and Yamachi to arrive in a corner of a café within the bustling downtown area. The sky was the color of a dull gray. It wasn’t long before Kushina and Yamachi appeared.
Here they are…!
Tension made my chest tighten as I observed the two of them from a distance. Kushina was wearing an off-shoulder black lace top. Her silky blonde hair was loosely curled. Her whole look was completed with sharp makeup. Beside her, Yamachi sported a gray jacket over a wine-red V-neck shirt with a wide neckline. To anyone unaware of their circumstances, they looked like the perfect couple. Both of them were stunning. Glancing around, I noticed a few nearby customers had been drawn to them. Their curious eyes followed the pair with great interest.
Even though the two of them are here to have a breakup talk..
I mulled over that thought when Kushina noticed me sitting in the corner of the café. Our eyes met each other for a moment and she gave me a small, but determined nod. After placing their orders and waiting for their drinks to be prepared, they moved to a table just two seats away from mine.
…So close, but well, it can’t be helped.
I didn’t see any other suitable empty spots nearby after all. Although they were sitting so close to me, but Yamachi didn’t seem to notice me. It must be thanks to the cap that I had pulled low to cover my face. Then again, maybe Yamachi didn’t even know who I was. In any case, this worked perfectly in my favor.
“—So, what did you want to talk about?”
After taking a sip of his drink, Yamachi shot that question to Kushina. With no one seated at the table between me and them, I could hear their conversation clearly.
“Yeah, well…”
Kushina hesitated. She was struggling to find the right words until eventually, she managed to find the courage to say the words she had been waiting to say.
“I’m sorry. Let’s break up.”
Straight to the point. Yamachi’s eyes widened in shock. He clearly didn’t expect Kushina would ask to break up all of a sudden like this.
“…Shizuku? Why? It’s so sudden… You’re joking, right…?”
Kushina shook her head slowly, but firmly.
“I’ve been mulling over this for a while now. I can’t keep pretending to be the girl you want me to be, Takashi.”
“Pretending? What do you mean by that?”
“A lot. Like supporting your dreams or pretending to be someone who doesn’t eat much…”
Although there was some truth in her words, but it was mostly a front to hide the real truth. She had come up with this excuse to avoid talking about Yamachi’s infidelity. Kushina seemed to be suppressing her emotions as she spoke. Of course, Yamachi wouldn’t accept the break up so easily.
“What’s with that? I don’t get it. You want to break up over something like that?”
“…I’m sorry for being selfish, but I just can’t be with you anymore.”
She apologized again and Yamachi let out an exaggerated sigh.
“Your sorry won’t cut it. Come on. You need to give me a proper explanation.”
Without bothering to conceal his irritations, Yamachi pressed on. Kushina was well aware her reasoning sounded so abrupt and trivial, so she couldn’t argue back.
“…I’m sorry.”
“I told you, ‘sorry’ doesn’t cut it.”
Yamachi’s voice grew more agitated while Kushina remained silent. Her gaze cast downward.
“Stop giving me the silent treatment. You make me look like the bad guy here.”
Saying that would only make her clam up even more. Anger was welling up inside me. Kushina was taking the blame to protect him, choosing to shoulder the guilt herself and yet, Yamachi had the audacity to act like that even though he was the one who cheated on Kushina.
That being said, Kushina was the stupid one here. She deliberately picked a path that would leave her hurt just to protect someone like him.
Goodness… What a self-sacrificing fool you are.. Should I step in?
That thought crossed my mind, but then again, this was a private problem between Kushina and Yamachi. I was well aware as an outsider, I didn’t have the right to interfere. In fact, I would only make things more complicated if I were to step in now. But still, just sitting here and doing nothing didn’t feel right either.
While I was wavering over what I should do, Yamachi spoke up.
“…Don’t tell me… Is it because of a guy?”
“…Huh?”
“I’m asking you if you have some other guy or something.”
Oi… This guy… Is he for real?!
He was the one who had been sneaking around and cheating on Kushina with Katagiri and yet, he was accusing Kushina for cheating instead? The sheer hypocrisy was staggering.
“Just be honest with me. You’re breaking up with me because you’ve got another guy—”
“No! That’s not it!”
Kushina shouted before he could finish speaking. Her voice trembled and tears were streaming down her face.
“Shizuku..?”
“Cruel… You’re so cruel…!”
Kushina’s voice was breaking. She was straining to speak because she was trying to hold her tears back. Even though she had every right to expose the infidelity, but she made a visible effort to avoid talking about it. Instead, she chose to swallow her anger and pain.
“I’m really thankful to you, Takashi. I really am. Back in middle school, you reached out to me when I had no friends. You saved me. That feeling hasn’t changed, even now. That’s the one thing I can say from the bottom of my heart.”
“…Sorry. I guess I let my suspicions get the better of me.”
“No, I’m sorry too, for suddenly raising my voice. But… I really can’t be with you anymore… I’m sorry.”
Silence ensued between them again. Though this time, Yamachi looked significantly less overbearing. He seemed to soften. A hint of resignation could be seen from him. He sighed and…
“…I understand your feelings, Shizuku. Thank you for everything up until now.”
“Yeah, me too…”
“But you see, there’s one last place I want to go with you. Will you come with me?”
“…Sure, but where is it?”
“It’s a secret.”
Yamachi said with a smile. Kushina tilted her head to the side, confused by his evasiveness. But in the end, she agreed to it. Since this was his final request as her boyfriend, she decided to go along with his whim. The two then left the café together.
