Goddess-Sama Vs. Childhood Friend. (Part 1)
“Good morning, Mikoto-san.”
“Good morning to you too, Akihara-kun.”
At 7:00 a.m. the next day, while I was preparing breakfast, Mikoto-san woke up.
She was quite cute as she rubbed her eyes sleepily.
Unlike her usual appearance at school, where she is known as the ice goddess, she was quite defenseless right now.
Mikoto-san walked past me and seemed to be about to go to the washroom.
But at that moment, Mikoto-san’s body suddenly swayed and she almost fell on the spot.
If she fell as she was, she might crash into the wall.
I hurried to support her.
I thought it was a sprain, but it shouldn’t have been that serious, and I don’t think it would have lasted long enough for today.
“Mikoto-san, what happened?”
The face of Mikoto-san, who was in my arms, turned red.
No, I think her face was red to begin with.
I put my hand on her forehead to check.
“Ak-Akihara-kun? St-stop it.”
“You are burning up.”
I groaned.
It seems that Mikoto-san has finally caught a real cold.
And not just a mild one.
No wonder, since she was out and about during this cold winter without any warm clothes.
“I-I’m fine.”
After saying that, Mikoto-san then coughed with pain.
I don’t think she was okay at all.
I then took some utensils out of the cupboard.
“Here, a thermometer. Measure your temperature.”
“I can go to school.”
“Even though you feel dizzy from just a little bit of walking?”
When I said this, Mikoto-san glared at me.
“I’m fine, I’m fine. Let go of me, Akihara-kun!”
After she shook me off, Mikoto-san took two or three steps, then stumbled again and almost fell down.
I had no choice but to hold her in my arms.
“Just take it easy and stay in bed.”
Mikoto-san nodded reluctantly with tears in her eyes.
At this rate, Mikoto-san would probably fall down again on the way back to the futon.
I took Mikoto-san onto the futon.
I measured her temperature with a thermometer and found it to be 39.4 degrees Celsius.
That’s a high fever.
“Guess you have to take the day off from school.”
“…Can’t help it.”
Mikoto-san pulled up the blanket and hid her face in embarrassment.
Then Mikoto-san said,
“Will you go to school though, Akihara-kun?”
“Ah, Hmm. I don’t know.”
“Stay by my side…”
I was surprised with what Mikoto-san, who was lying right before me, said.. Gazing intently into her face as she mumbled something that sounded like she was upset.
Mikoto-san said, “Forget what I just said,” her face turning redder and redder.
I guess it must have slipped out from her mouth, but I wondered if she really meant that she wanted me to stay here.
“Do you want me to stay home with you?”
“I-I didn’t say that.”
Saying so, Mikoto-san coughed with a red face.
It is true that it’s awkward to leave a sick person with a high fever alone at school.
If something were to happen, I’d have to take her to the hospital, and if her condition worsened further and no one was there to help her, I wouldn’t be able to count on anyone’s help either.
When Amane-nee san fell ill and collapsed, I had to take a day off just to take care of her.
I thought I would take a day off too today, so I called the school and lied that I had a cold too.
I had to be careful, though, because if I caught Mikoto-san’s cold, it would turn into the truth.
Then I sent a message to Kaho on my phone saying I was taking the day off.
And of course, there was no way I would tell her that Mikoto-san would be absent too.
The place where Mikoto-san’s phone was being charged was a little far away from her futon.
It must be hard for her to get up and pick it up, so I picked up Mikoto-san’s smartphone and handed it to her in the futon.
“I know you are having a hard time, but can you call the school?”
“Yes.”
While Mikoto-san was coughing and talking on the phone to the school, I took a plastic bottle of sports drink from the refrigerator.
I put it in a cup and offered it to Mikoto-san after she finished the phone call.
“You should drink some water for now. Can you drink it?”
“Thanks…”
Mikoto-san slightly raised her body, put her mouth on the cup and started to drink.
She looked very tired and her shoulders were slumped.
She seemed to be having a hard time.
Then, Mizukoto-san looked at me.
“I didn’t say I wanted you to take a day off from school, Akihara-kun.”
“I’m not taking a day off because you asked me to, Mikoto-san. I’m taking a day off because I want to.”
“Liar. You took the day off to take care of me, didn’t you?”
Mikoto-san interrupted.
I think it’s so hard for her to even speak.
I shook my head.
“Mikoto-san, you should get some sleep.”
“I’m sorry…”
“Why are you apologizing?”
“The day before yesterday, when it was cold, you prepared clothes, a drink, a bath, and food for me so that I wouldn’t catch a cold. But in the end, I caught a cold.”
“I don’t think that’s something you should apologize for, Mikoto-san. Well, it would have been better if you had borrowed my coat yesterday and gone out.”
“That’s… a bad manner.”
“You know, I think when people make an offer with good intentions, sometimes it’s best to accept it with an open heart.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes, that’s right. So, you don’t have to worry about it, Mikoto-san. Do you have an appetite? I’ll make you some porridge or something for now.”
Mikoto-san shook her head.
I guess she doesn’t have an appetite right now.
That’s what happens when you have a high fever.
I wished I had some cooling sheets or masks, but unfortunately I was out of them.
“I’m going to the pharmacy for a while, so please be patient while I’m gone.”
“I feel like I’m being treated like a child…”
Mikoto-san murmured in embarrassment.
