Living Together With The Goddess-Sama. (Part 4)
The goddess said she can’t go back to her own home.
If that were true, I should probably ask her about the situation.
But when I asked about it, Mikoto-san’s beautiful blue eyes were then downcast and she was trembling as if frightened.
I could not insensitively ask such a girl with such a painful look on her face.
We are just distant relatives, strangers.
I didn’t know what to say to her, and for a moment, silence reigned.
At that moment, the sound of the water heater’s automatic hot-water supply was heard echoing through the room.
It seemed that the bath water was ready.
Relieved, I smiled at Mikoto-san.
“Why don’t you go take a bath first?”
“But… I…”
“Don’t worry about explaining the situation later. Warming yourself up is the most important thing right now. Oh, that’s right. I need to give you some change of clothes.”
I took a set of red jerseys from the top of the closet.
Then I turned and glanced at Mikoto-san.
Looking at her again, I realized that she was quite stylish and tall for a girl.
Still, I think my clothes would be very bulky for a girl.
Well, it can’t be helped.
I don’t know what she plans to do with her underwear, but of course I won’t ask her about that.
When Mikoto-san accepted the jersey, she said, “Thanks,” in a whisper and looked at it.
“Is this yours? Akihara-kun?”
“That’s right. I only have my clothes and my father’s old clothes in this room. You’ll have to bear with it.”
“Are they washed?”
“Of course. I’m a very organized person.”
Mikoto-san looked around the room, then nodded in agreement.
For a single male high school student living alone, I think the room is pretty tidy.
Even the laundry and cooking are not too shabby.
Before I had her soaking in the bathtub, there was one thing I needed to ask her first.
“Mikoto-san, have you eaten dinner yet?”
“I haven’t.”
I knew that she probably hadn’t had dinner yet, since she had apparently made it here at night with no luggage at all.
I doubt if she even had her wallet with her.
Also, I hadn’t eaten dinner yet either.
I smiled.
“Do you have an appetite?”
“I? I’m hungry but what about it?”
“No, nothing.”
Mizukoto-san looked at me strangely because of my words, but eventually vanished into the bathroom with unsteady steps.
I sat down on a chair at the dining table.
Then I sighed.
What in the world is going on?
Whatever the future holds, it is almost certain that Mikoto-san will be staying here today.
But I had a feeling that that would be a bad idea in more ways than one.
I questioned the decency of adults who would encourage a man and a woman of her age to sleep in the same room.
Well, I’m talking about Amane-nee san.
I took out my smart phone and called her, the source of all of this.
It would be an international call since she was in the U.S., but it shouldn’t cost that much because of the plan I have.
The problem was that it was early in the morning on the other side of the world, considering the time difference.
I was worried whether she would be awake or not, but I heard from Mikoto-san that Amane-nee san called Mikoto-san’s place a while ago.
If that’s the case, it’ll probably be fine.
Within one call, the phone was answered.
“Hello? This is Amane Akihara.”
The words were beautifully pronounced.
When I called her and received a response like that, I once again realized that she was actually studying abroad.
Unlike me, she is studying at a prestigious university in the U.S., and she is extremely talented.
However, she lacks common sense.
“I am Haruto. Akihara Haruto. I’m sorry for calling so early in the morning. I see you’re already up.”
When I spoke, a cheerful voice came back with an, “Oh!”
“Long time no see! I’m fine as I should be without needing you to ask me, but how are you doing, Haruto?”
I giggled, thinking to myself, You don’t have to emphasize that you are fine.
But talking with Amane-nee san makes me feel a little more energetic, too.
I answered her question.
“I’m all fine too, thank you. Anyway, didn’t you have my number on your phone?”
“I did, but I didn’t check who it was and hit the answer button.”
“Why didn’t you check it…”
“It’s about time Haruto-kun calls me, is what I thought.”
I could imagine Amane-nee san smiling at me on the other end of the phone.
She was the kind of person who always had weird thoughts, always wanted to do whatever she wanted, and always acted as she pleased without thinking of the trouble she might cause others.
But I didn’t dislike that free spirit of hers.
“I heard you gave my classmate the key to our house.”
“I did. I gave it to our cousin, Mikoto Rei.”
“Why did you do that?”
“Because it would be a waste.”
“Ehh?”
“If I study abroad, there would be a bunch of keys left over that no one would use. So I thought it would be better to give it to someone who might use it.”
“Don’t treat our keys like expired pudding…”
“Isn’t it alright? It’s my key to the house, too. “
“I’m the only one living there right now. In addition, isn’t it bad for two high school students, a boy and a girl, to be alone in the same house?”
“Oh, you’re thinking of something dirty, aren’t you? But if you put it that way, you and I were living in the same house alone just a little while ago too, right, Haruto-kun?”
Well, it is true that since my father moved out on his own, it has been just the two of us in this house.
But that’s not the same thing.
Amane-nee san continued in a happy, cheerful voice.
“Perhaps, Haruto, when you were alone with me, you imagined that we might be able to have sex?”
“I didn’t! But I don’t know what my father would think if he heard about me living with Mikoto-san…”
“Don’t worry, uncle knows that I gave the key to Mikoto-san.”
I almost dropped the phone from my hand.
According to Amane-nee san, her uncle, in other words, my father, had already given his consent.
I was getting more and more puzzled.
Unlike my sister, my father is supposed to be a sensible person.
I asked her.
“I heard that Mikoto-san can no longer live in her previous house. Was that also your suggestion? Amane-nee san?”
“That’s right. She is the young lady of the Tomi family.”
She said casually.
Ah, I see.
I had heard rumors that Mikoto-san was the daughter of the president of a large company, and to some extent, it was true.
The Tomi family was the family that owned the largest business group in this local city.
The Tomi Group is involved in a number of businesses, including construction, telecommunications, real estate, and retail, and boasts consolidated group sales of several hundred billion yen.
The Tomis were the original members of the Akihara family.
The Akihara family split off from the Tomi family in the latter half of the Edo period. In addition, our grandfather’s wife, or our grandmother, was also a member of the Tomi family.
Unfortunately, unlike the Tomis, the Akiharas had no wealth of their own.
That is why my father is a regular government employee and I am living in this cheap apartment.
Nowadays, the terms “main family” and “branch family” are becoming obsolete, and I myself am not close to the Tomi family and rarely visit them.
But still, it is strange.
“Mikoto-san’s last name is different. If she is from the Tomi family, why isn’t her family name Tomi?”
“There are complicated circumstances. I can’t explain now.”
I sighed once more.
“If it had been just a quarrel between parents and children that made her run away from home, I would have sent her back to the Tomi mansion right now. But it’s not like that, is it?”
“She’s not a normal runaway girl. That girl really can’t go back to the mansion. So, protect her.”
“Protect Mikoto-san? Me?”
“Don’t worry. You can do it, Haruto-kun. Because you are a kind kid.”
Then she said, “I’m busy,” and hung up the phone.
I understand that her academic work is so hard that she has to study from early in the morning, but please consider my situation as well, Amane-nee san.
She said I was “kind” and that that was why I could protect Mikoto-san.
But being kind is of no use to me.
Kaho always told me that I was a kind person as well.
But she still rejected me.
I then tried calling my father, but there was no answer.
Maybe he was working late.
I heard the shower running.
I guessed that Mikoto-san was washing her body.
I couldn’t afford to blush at the thought of that.
Tomi mansion, huh?
Crossing the river to the west from the city center, at the foot of the mountain, was the Tomi mansion.
Whenever someone hears the name of the mansion across the river, everyone in this town thinks of the Tomi family’s mansion.
I remember when I visited Tomi’s mansion when I was in elementary school.
Behind the large, old-fashioned gate was a large, purely Japanese-style house and garden.
It was a large mansion, but somehow the house was covered with a dark, somber atmosphere.
I broke off my train of thought.
I was hungry.
I had planned to eat dinner as soon as I got home, but it was already too late.
Well, let’s prepare a meal, though a simple one.
Of course, I’ll prepare one for Mikoto-san, too.
