Chapter 53: She’s Back to Her Usual Self
“Ara…? Where is this?”
It was a strange space.
Arisu stood in an indescribable darkness, a place so eerie that she couldn’t sense the presence of anything—or anyone—besides herself.
“…Well, something like this isn’t so bad once in a while, I guess?”
It was certainly an unsettling place, but not frightening in the least.
Wearing a challenging smile that seemed out of place here, Arisu stepped forward with confidence.
And then, appearing before her was a familiar face.
“…You are…”
“A-Arisu…?”
It was Akito.
Normally, no matter where she was, the sight of him would fill her heart with joy. But this time was different.
Why?
Because the Akito standing before her now was not the one she longed for.
“Why now, of all times…? Ah, I see. Dreams aren’t always pleasant, are they? Ugh, how disgusting… Absolutely revolting.”
A nauseating feeling churned in her chest—one born from memories of the past.
Even though she had accepted the engagement for the sake of her family, even though she had maintained her indifference toward Akito, the revulsion she once felt for him was immeasurable.
The more she came to know the Akito who now stood by her side, the more she understood—she no longer needed the one standing in front of her now. Words far too cruel to say threatened to spill from her lips.
“Arisu! What the hell is this?! You—did you do something to me?!”
“…Haa.”
What an oddly realistic dream, Arisu thought as she let out a sigh.
The way he spoke, his demeanor, even the condescending gaze he directed at her—it was all just like the Akito from before.
“You.”
“What?”
“Exactly what position do you think you’re looking down on me from?”
“…Hah?”
Arisu considered this a good opportunity.
At the end of the day, it was still just a dream. The Akito before her wasn’t the real one—he had long since disappeared.
Even so, if this dream was going to be so vivid, if he was going to respond as if he were real, then she might as well enjoy it.
“What do you mean by that…?”
“Exactly what I said. You look down on me… and since it’s you, I’ll say this—your family ranks below mine. Even as your fiancée, I could cast you out into the streets with a single word.”
She no longer bothered to choose her words.
For so long, she had wanted to say it. But for the sake of her family, she had held back.
Now, she finally had the chance to let it all out—though in the end, she blamed herself for not saying it sooner.
“Hah?! What the hell are you talking about? Our engagement isn’t something that can be broken so easily. Besides, I’m a man, and you’re just a woman—my position is naturally higher than yours.”
“…………”
I see, so that’s how he thinks, Arisu nodded to herself.
Come to think of it, they had never spoken this openly before.
So this was what he truly believed.
How could someone raised by those parents end up like this…?
Then again, if he was this much of a piece of trash, she could cut him off without hesitation.
“We never talked about things like this, did we? No wonder you think that way. But now I understand—there’s no way you and I could ever see eye to eye. Comparing you to him is laughable… No, it’s downright insulting to him.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“The one I love.”
At those words, Akito’s eyes widened in shock.
She briefly considered drowning him in declarations of her love for him—just to make him suffer—but honestly, she’d rather wake up right now and talk to Akito. Even if it was just over the phone.
“Well then, I’ll be going.”
“Hey, wait—”
“I won’t. This place… isn’t where I belong.”
Turning away, Arisu let out a quiet snort.
She didn’t know what kind of fate had befallen him, but for someone as broken as this, the darkness suited him well.
“Goodbye.”
With a voice dripping in mockery, in farewell, she left.
Her beautiful silver hair swayed as she walked away, her parting glance one so bewitching that any man would be captivated.
And just like that, Arisu departed from the world of dreams.

“…! Arisu is coming!”
Morning.
I woke up with those words bursting from my mouth.
If anyone had been nearby, they’d definitely be startled, but for some reason, I had a strong feeling that Arisu was on her way here.
“…Yeah, no way, right?”
Or so I thought—until I heard a light knock, knock.
Normally, she’d call out while knocking, but this time, she was completely silent. It was clear she was trying to be as quiet as possible.
I remained still in bed, not answering, and watched as the door slowly creaked open.
“…Ara?”
The one who entered was Arisu.
Her eyes widened when she saw me, and behind her, even Amane-san let out a surprised Ara?
Too.
“You’re awake?”
“I had a feeling you were coming… never thought I’d actually be right, though.”
“How boring… but still, not bad. That’s good in it’s own way.”
“Is this… the special connection between fiancés? Fufu, I’m honestly jealous.”
“Oh my, what are you saying? Amane-san, you’ve grown quite close to Akito-san yourself, haven’t you?”
“…!”
At Arisu’s words, Amane-san turned bright red. But despite her embarrassment, she smiled as she took a step back to wait by the door.
Arisu, on the other hand, walked right up to me—and wrapped her arms around my head.
“Arisu?”
“While you were sick and I couldn’t see you, I missed you so much. Every single second without you was unbearable… And I couldn’t stop worrying—what if you started looking at someone else while I was gone?”
“Hey, like hell that would happen. You, of all people, should know that.”
“Fufu, that’s true.”
Arisu let out a small chuckle and sat down beside me.
Since I’d just woken up, my hair was a mess and I was still in my pajamas. Honestly, I wanted to freshen up quickly.
But right now, no matter what I said, she wasn’t going to let go of me.
“While you were gone, Sophia and Filia kept me company.”
“I asked them to. Thanks to that, you weren’t lonely, right?”
“Yeah. But still… having you here is completely different.”
“Is it really… that much?”
“It really is.”
I had genuinely missed her, after all.
(…I can’t believe I’m saying stuff like this so naturally now.)
The words I spoke to Arisu were surprisingly honest.
Maybe it was because I had finally told her I loved her. Because she had told me the same in return.
Or maybe it was because I had truly made up my mind—to walk toward the future together with her.
“…Hah, to think it all started with lies and bluffs.”
“Lies and bluffs?”
“Nothing, forget it.”
As Arisu tilted her head in confusion, I simply smiled and got up to start getting ready for school.
And so, after breakfast, we rode in the car driven by Sakuragi-san, spending a peaceful moment together.
“Y’know,”
“Hm?”
“For a world like this… it sure feels peaceful.”
“Peace is a good thing. It’s always better to have nothing unpleasant or dangerous happen.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
I wasn’t sure why I brought it up.
But I knew one thing—this world was filled with schemes and conspiracies.
“Hey,”
“Hmm?”
As I was lost in thought, Arisu leaned against my shoulder.
“Stop thinking about difficult things. Look at me, your fiancée. Focus on me and only me.”
“…Yeah. Got it.”
It seemed that she had missed me far more than I realized.
And I couldn’t help but wonder—if we were ever separated for months… just how would Arisu handle it?
