Chapter 19 What helped with my sudden headache
First, I tried casting Perfect Heal.
The symptoms eased, and my classmate stopped writhing in pain.
“Phew… Th-thank you—”
However, just as she stood up to express her gratitude,
“Ah…!”
With the end of Perfect Heal’s duration, she began to suffer again.
So Perfect Heal didn’t fully work. It seemed to alleviate the pain while it was active, so it wasn’t entirely ineffective, but it only provided temporary relief and didn’t cure the underlying issue.
That leaves me with two options. Either use a higher-level healing spell or a specialized spell tailored to her symptoms instead of a general-purpose one like Perfect Heal.
While continuously casting Perfect Heal could help for now, it wouldn’t be a permanent solution. Ideally, I should try to address the root cause rather than just the symptoms.
She kept holding her head. It seemed like she was experiencing severe headaches.
But what kind of headache wouldn’t be cured by Perfect Heal? The usual suspects for severe headaches are brain hemorrhages or early symptoms of a stroke, but those should be cured by Perfect Heal.
There must be some hint. Reflecting on her words, I considered one possibility.
Cluster headaches.
Cluster headaches are severe headaches caused by abnormalities in the brain’s nerves, so painful that they are also known as “suicide headaches.” Such fine neurological issues are one of the few things Perfect Heal can’t cure.
To fully cure it, an even higher-level spell is needed. However, sedative potions or tranquilizers can serve as a symptomatic treatment. That’s likely why she asked for a calming spell earlier.
But if a full cure is possible, relying on symptomatic treatment seems odd. Perfect Heal might not work, but a higher-level spell should be able to cure it. So, I should cast that.
I cast a spell called Absolute Heal.
This time, her headache completely subsided.
“You saved me…”
Relieved from the pain, she let out a sigh of relief.
“The symptoms had only been appearing about once a month lately… so I forgot to carry my tranquilizers…”
I see.
Indeed, it was odd that she didn’t have any treatment with her despite having such a chronic condition, but given her explanation, it made sense. Cluster headaches have an unclear cause and can start or stop suddenly.
“Thank you so much. You’re my lifesaver.”
“Oh, it’s not that big of a deal…”
Though they are nicknamed “suicide headaches,” they usually only cause fainting. Death is rare unless there’s a secondary accident, like hitting one’s head and causing severe bleeding.
“By the way… you tried two different spells, right? The first one was Perfect Heal, but what was the second?”
“Absolute Heal.”
“What!?”
Upon hearing the name of the spell, not just my classmate but also the surrounding healers were synchronized in their surprise.
“Absolute Heal…!? It’s true that it can cure almost anything at its root, but isn’t that the spell that the Holy Maiden takes an hour to construct and only has a one-third success rate?”
“I can’t believe I made you use such a spell! I’m so sorry, a simple tranquilizing spell would’ve been enough…”
While the healers stood in shock, my classmate kept bowing repeatedly in apology.
…Well, sure, Absolute Heal consumed more magic power than Perfect Heal, but it wasn’t as arduous as they made it out to be.
