Chapter 17 Royalty Income
When the first period of Potion Brewing ended, I began moving to the classroom for my second period.
The second period class was… coincidentally, Magic Tool Creation Practicum.
Even so, since the content of the class would be predetermined, I likely wouldn’t finish my own project during the session. More importantly, today’s classes end after the second period—meaning I have the afternoon off, which is a nice bonus. Considering I had to attend the first period, it’s more or less a break-even.
Lost in these trivial thoughts, I entered the classroom.
Then, unexpectedly, the teacher approached me.
“Ah, you’re the student who created that gravity manipulation device during the entrance exam, right?”
It seems the instructor was the same examiner from that time.
“There’s nothing I can teach you. You’d probably be bored attending the class as usual, so feel free to do whatever you want. I’ll give you the credits regardless. If you need any materials, just ask—I’ll provide anything within my reach.”
Once again, it seems I’ve secured credits for a subject right from the start.
…Don’t I have a lot of subjects like this?
Nevertheless, having the class time to myself is a blessing. I can use it to create the molecular separation magic tool.
“Thank you.”
To avoid disrupting the others, I took a seat at the back of the class. When the class began, I used that time to complete the molecular separation magic tool.
◇
After the second period ended, I immediately went to inform the Potions professor that I had completed the magic tool. The professor was quite surprised and said, “Already done?” He then mentioned that he would contact me once he had secured an appointment with the president of his acquaintance’s pharmaceutical company.
Two days later, the appointment was set, and the president visited the academy. I was to meet him in the school’s reception room.
“Nice to meet you. I am Robert Jason, president of Jason & Jason Pharmaceuticals.”
The president began by giving a brief overview of his company, showing some documents. In short, Jason & Jason Pharmaceuticals is a leading company, handling 60% of the global potion sales.
Next, President Robert showed an estimate of the economic impact if their traditional potions were replaced with those using Aarl grass. According to him, the cost of materials and labor would be about one-third of the current potions. This reduction in labor costs is due to the simpler brewing process.
“…Therefore, we plan to set the final potion price at two-thirds of the current price and offer you 50% of the sales revenue from the molecular separation magic tool as a perpetual royalty. What do you think?”
The president proposed these terms. I see, it’s not just about selling the magic tool; I would also receive ongoing royalty income.
I remembered my mother saying that the wealthiest people in human society are those with assets. With passive income, one doesn’t need to work, leading to a comfortable life. However, she also mentioned that less than 1% of the world’s population achieves this lifestyle.
Aiming for that was quite ambitious, so I initially aimed to work for a decent company. But now, it seemed like I was taking my first step towards becoming wealthy.
“Thank you. I accept those terms.”
I decided to agree to the conditions.
“Now, can you show me the magic tool you created?”
Prompted by the president, it was my turn to explain.
“Here it is.”
I used storage magic to take out the magic tool.
“The potion liquid poured in from the upper inlet will be separated at this section and stored in the two tanks below. The tank labeled ‘Heal’ will store the healing potion, and the tank labeled ‘Intoxicate’ will store the substance causing side effects. Each tank has an internal subspace, allowing for a maximum storage capacity of 4 million liters. The separation efficiency reaches up to 200,000 liters per hour at full operation.”
I briefly explained the specifications of the magic tool.
“One machine can process 200,000 liters per hour…!” President Robert exclaimed, wide-eyed at the specs.
“What kind of magic stone do you use to achieve such performance?”
“I used a griffon’s magic stone as the core.”
“A griffon!? You used such an incredible material…”
Of course, I had obtained that griffon during a magic combat class when I shot it down. It was flying at a conveniently low altitude, allowing me to use its high-quality magic stone as material.
“If its specs are that high… this single unit could cover our company’s entire share. Initially, I thought we might have you mass-produce identical magic tools if the test run went well. But if it’s this powerful, we can order additional units only if the ‘Aarl Grass Potion’ helps expand our market share and we can’t keep up with demand.”
While saying this, the president pulled out a contract from his pocket. It seemed like the magic tool would indeed be purchased.
“If you sign this, we’ll finalize the contract.”
I carefully read through the contract, ensuring it matched the initial explanation, then signed the signature line. Once the contract was signed, the president stored the magic tool in his personal magic bag and left the academy.
It’s still uncertain how much income this will generate, but it feels like my life is heading in a better direction.
