Chapter 2: The Weak Demon Lord Appears in His Subordinate’s Time of Crisis
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“Wh-What is going on here!? Isn’t this supposed to be a distinguished dungeon!?”
I was speechless as I arrived at the Tokyo Dungeon in Japan. According to what I had heard from the Great Demon Lord, Ivriel-sama, Tokyo Dungeon had existed for centuries and was a place of great renown.
So what in the world had happened? The walls, floor, and ceiling were crumbling and looked ready to collapse at any moment. All the treasure chests were empty. Trash likely discarded by explorers littered the floor, and there was even a putrid stench, as if something had rotted.
It was an absolute mess.
“Um, excuse me. This is the Tokyo Dungeon, right?”
“Huh?”
I addressed a slime trembling at the edge of the hallway. The slime looked me over like it was appraising me, then let out a sigh in a strangely gravelly voice.
“You one of the new monsters? Heh. Look at you, wearing some fancy-looking robe like you’re hot stuff.”
“Eh? N-No, I’m actu—”
“Yeah yeah, save it. Spare me the self-intro. I don’t give a damn what your name is. Lemme guess, you came here thinking it was some friendly, community-style dungeon, right?”
“Well, actually, I’m the new Demon Lo—”
“If you’re looking to fight glorious battles against humans or whatever, pack your bags and go back to the demon world before your dreams get crushed.”
Without so much as listening to me, the slime slithered off somewhere.
Huh? Wait, what?
I had imagined that dungeon monsters would be more passionate, working hard for Ivriel-sama’s cause. That was when it happened.
“So you’re over here, new Demon Lord-sama.”
“Huh?”
A voice called out from behind me. I turned to see a cute girl dressed in a maid outfit. Her sky-blue hair and eyes were striking, and her expression didn’t move a muscle. She was a flawless beauty.
Her appearance was quite close to that of a human. However, it was clear to anyone that she wasn’t human. Small horns protruded from her head, bat-like wings fluttered behind her, and her tail ended in a heart shape. All of these were common traits of the demon race—the most populous race in the demon world.
Also, despite her petite frame, she had very large breasts. Indecent. Outrageously indecent. I was thankful for the view. Not that I actually had eyes, being a skeleton and all.
“And you are?”
“I am Al of the demon race. Until your arrival, I have been managing part of this Tokyo Dungeon.”
“Hmm, Al-san, is it? What a lovely name. I am Olden, and though I may not look it, I am a Demon Lord.”
“…Olden? Could it be? Are you that Demon Lord Olden?”
Al blinked in surprise as she asked.
“Oh? So you know me. Fufu, I’ve finally made a name for myself.”
“Yes. You’re that Demon Lord Olden, known for being one of the weakest among the Demon Lords, right?”
“…Fu. Fufufu…”
To be known as weak even by a girl I just met—it was rather painful. If I had a flesh-and-blood body, I probably would have cried. As I silently wept inside, Al opened her mouth again.
“Forgive my rudeness, but do you have any experience running a dungeon, Olden-sama?”
“No, I’ve been holed up in the demon world all this time. To tell you the truth, this is my first time in both a dungeon and on the surface.”
“…I see.”
Though her face remained expressionless, I didn’t miss the faint sign of disappointment. To her eyes, I was just a literal skeleton becoming the new ruler—the Dungeon Master. She had every right to be displeased.
I knew there was no other way to earn her trust than through my actions going forward. Or so I thought—
“Then, I shall continue to manage the dungeon as I have been.”
“Eh? N-No, I couldn’t ask that of you. I’ll take over the management—”
“No need. Olden-sama should remain in the deepest chamber and await any human intruders.”
“Ah, okay…”
Without waiting for my reply, Al turned and walked away. It seemed earning Al’s trust was going to take some time.
“…Well, for now, I guess I’ll start by cleaning up all this garbage.”
Start small. Pieces by pieces. Bone joke intended.
I slung a trash bin on my back and started picking up the scattered garbage with tongs.
Wait, shouldn’t I be waiting in my chamber? It’s fine, it’s fine. I’m a Demon Lord, after all. Only the Great Demon Lord can order me around. Ahh, now that I’m in Japan, I want to try some sushi.
…Not that I have a stomach, haha.

“…This dungeon is finished.”
Walking through a deserted hallway full of trash, Al muttered to herself. Her expression was dark.
This new Demon Lord has never run a dungeon before. Honestly, he’s just in the way. Just what was the Great Demon Lord thinking?
She thought back to the Demon Lord she had just greeted. He didn’t seem like a Demon Lord at all. The atmosphere around him was so relaxed, there was no trace of authority. People said he was one of the weakest demon lords and that must be true.
That really pissed her off. A Demon Lord should be the strongest, an absolute being. Using polite speech with subordinates? Absolutely unacceptable. At least, the Demon Lord Al had once admired (the Demon Lord from two generations ago) had been like that.
Tokyo Dungeon became famous thanks to the Demon Lord from two generations ago.
Only for the previous Demon Lord to ruin everything…
The last one did nothing. He gave no orders, just lazed around in his chamber all day. His lack of motivation spread to the others, and the dungeon became a mess. Humans stopped coming.
When he was finally defeated by a human, they replaced him with this clueless amateur. Al bit her lip in anger.
…No, this is fine. If the Demon Lord is useless, then I’ll fix things myself. That way, maybe everyone will go back to how they used to be.
If she worked hard enough, she could turn things around. She just had to shove the worthless Demon Lord to the back and keep him out of the way.
She took a deep breath, suppressing her rising rage, and prepared to get to work… Then it happened.
“Hey, look! A female-type monster!!”
“…!”
Several armed men approached Al with sleazy grins.
“She’s pretty cute, huh?”
“This one’ll get us some solid views~”
“Should we just go for it?”
Looking at their lower halves, it was obvious what they had in mind. Al fired off a spell the moment she saw them.
“Flare Blast!!”
“Whoa, that was close!!”
“Hey hey, don’t get yourself toasted now~”
“Damn, almost got us! A bit more and we’d be crisp!”
Though she attacked by surprise, the men dodged easily. Their movements were polished. Even Al, with her limited battle experience, could tell they were skilled. Still, even after recognizing the difference in strength, she tried to intimidate them.
“Begone, humans!! Next time, I won’t miss!!”
“Pfft. ‘Begone,’ she says!!”
“Don’t laugh! I like ‘em feisty.”
They laughed as they surrounded her. Al tried to cast another powerful spell—but then..
“Not happening, dumbass!!”
“Guh!”
One man, probably the leader, closed the distance and kicked her in the stomach. The air rushed out of her lungs and she collapsed. Unable to move, the men pinned her down and began ripping her clothes.
She fought back, of course.
“Whoo! She’s got some nice tits!! Jackpot!!”
“L-Let go of me! Don’t touch me, you filthy humans!!”
“Man, shut up! Take this!!”
“Gah!”
“Heh, monster girls really are the best. I don’t even feel guilty hitting ‘em.”
“…You scum…”
Al forced herself to glare at them. The leader straddled her and grinned.
“Hey, come on. The real monsters are you guys, killing all those humans. We’re the good guys here.”
“Yeah! We’re just some righteous adventurers, filming a little justice porn for the internet while we’re at it!”
“Wow~ Look at that~ The bad guy is pretending to be righteous!”
“You’re the one who suggested it first, Leader!”
Al squeezed her eyes shut, trying to push back the rising terror. It wasn’t the first time something like this had happened. She had prepared herself. But now that it was happening to her again, it was still terrifying.
“Huh? Wait, is she shaking?”
“Seriously? Damn, she’s trembling! Poor thing. Not that we’re gonna stop!”
The leader sneered at her.
“Man, it’s so great that you monsters don’t have any rights. We can do whatever we want. Livestream the video, kill some evil monsters and feel like heroes while we’re at it? Goodness. It really doesn’t get any better than this.”
“…”
“Oh? Giving up already? Hey, keep the camera rolling. Time to ‘educate’ this bad monster girl!”
Tears welled up in Al’s eyes as the man turned to the camera with a smug grin and that was when Death arrived.
“Oh my, you there.”
“-!?”
“What exactly do you think you’re doing?”
A figure approached, a trash bin slung over its back, tongs in hand, golden eyes gleaming. It was a jet-black skeleton.

Afterword:
Since monsters are treated the same as vermin, assaulting them isn’t even considered a crime.
