Chapter 9: Mental Check 1
After school. I had come to the family restaurant, our agreed meeting spot.
Katase’s figure was yet to arrive. Feeling bad about not ordering anything, so I casually ordered some snacks and drinks for the both of us from the drink bar.
“Sorry, did I make you wait.”
“Nah~, I just got here a moment ago myself.”
Shortly after, Katase arrived. It felt like the kind of exchange you’d see between a newly dating couple. It’s embarrassing and creepy, so I won’t say that out loud though.
“It kinda of feels like the kind of exchange you’d see between a newly dating couple right… ehehe.”
Katase, who sat across from me, scratched her cheek while chuckled shyly. Really, the fact that even she was feeling the exact same way made me fret a little, as I struggled to respond.
“Ah~… anyway, I went ahead and ordered some snacks and drinks for both of us.”
“Thank you.”
“So, what drink do you want me to you?”
“Eh?”
“Ah~, nope, I haven’t gone to get mine yet as well, so I thought I’d grab yours too while I’m at it.”
“I-It’s okay. That much, I can go get it myself.”
“is that so.”
“Un.”
Since the person in question said so, I figured it was fine. So I got up from my seat to get my drink.
I chose an iced cafe au lait. Then added about five types of syrup to it, and thus creating my signature Kazari blend.
“Eh, Kazari-kun… won’t that make it too sweet?”
Katase, who was contemplating what to drink, had her face twitch in grimace when she saw my Kazari blend in front of her.
“What are you talking about, Katase? A little extra sweetness is what makes it delicious, right? In case of Cafe au lait.”
“I-I see…”
As if unable to quite understand that well, Katase’s had that kind of subtle reaction. Well, it’s fine. Even if others are put off by it, as long as my taste buds are satisfied, it’s all well.
After all, my life is bitter… so let me enjoy my drink a little sweet.
Ku~uuuuuuuu… so cool!
*chug chug.
But let’s not show that on the outside. If I reveal my inner chuunibyou out, my sweet iced cafe au lait will become infected and turn pitch black instead.
…Am I, tired or something?
No, no, this is bad… I need to get some sugar in me as soon as possible. I left the contemplating Katase, and returned to my seat.
Katase returned a little later. After much contemplation, it seems she ultimately chose to go with orange juice.
“It’s a common dilemma at family restaurants, or rather, at every drink bar at that. I always start struggle with what to get myself.”
“Well, why not just try them all? Then you wouldn’t have to struggle anymore.”
“No, no, if I’d do that, my stomach will get too full. Plus, in case of this, the first drink is the most crucial one.”
“Haee~.”
Why are you getting picky on just a drink bar, but I won’t comment on that. After all, everyone has their own different way of enjoying things.
Instead, without realizing it, I had already placed a platter of fried potatoes and sausages in front of Katase.
“Feel free to eat as much you like.”
“Ah, um, thank you… Somehow, today’s Kazari-kun remind me of my grandma when I meet her after a while.”
“Nn? What’s with that oddly specific yet vague comparison?”
“Un~nn, don’t worry about it… ——–Well, then I’ll take you up on your offer.”
Katase picked up a fried potato with her fingers and brought it to her mouth.
“Unn~, delicious.”
I returned her smile with a “glad you liked it” and refreshed my throat with my own Kazari blend.
This sticky sweet aftertaste lingering in my mouth… IRRESISTIBLE.
