Chapter 6: Problems unique to girls 3
“…That girl gave up on her love. Even though she wanted to respond to the confession from the guy she liked, she couldn’t do it in the end,”
“Welp, that must have been tough on the guy too… Rather, didn’t he notice anything strange in her behaviour?”
“He must have noticed, but he couldn’t come to the conclusion that the suspect was Sumire. Or so I think.”
“I see…”
I understood clearly why Hiiragi was being so worried about Katase. The methods Tachibana might use were unknown, but given that the boy never figured it out, they were likely very covert and sinister.
Tachibana might have been a victim of unrequited love as well, but her actions are way beyond forgivable. I can’t sympathize with her.
“I have no right to speak ill of Sumire, considering I used Sayo myself… but what she did was just too much,”
“I agree. Tachibana’s actions are something which can’t be forgiven/excused.”
“Un… That’s why I’m going to protect Sayo in case anything turns to the worst-case scenario. Fortunately, Sumire doesn’t come after me too strongly.”
“That’s a good plan. We wouldn’t want to provoke Tachibana in the wrong way, although it’s hard to figure out the clear-cut line we got to walk in, but it’s still way better than no preparation at all. Ideally, it would be best if Tachibana leaves Katase alone… but given the precedent, we can’t afford to take any chances.”
Saying that much, I looked away from Hiiragi and stared out of the window, feeling awkward about what I was about to say next.
“Um~… well… how to put it… I’ll do what I can do to help as well,”
“………….”
Eh? What the!? You’re ignoring that!? I mustered up all my courage to say that, and you are going to completely ignore it!?
Thinking that I shouldn’t have done something I was not used to, thus, being still slightly embarrassed, I turned my face back at Hiiragi.
“…Umm, could you at least say something? Like, don’t do anything unnecessary, or I don’t want to trouble you, or there are a lot of things you can say you know.”
After I said that, Hiiragi’s stunned expression quickly shifted to a more familiar and cool demeanour.
“I think you’re expecting the wrong kind of reaction from me. So, what about it – Are you willing to help? or not?”
“Take it however you like.”
“…You really aren’t true to yourself now, are you?”
“Welp obviously. Since I don’t have a straight tongue to begin with.”
Although I thought that my response was rather curt and helpless, to my surprise, Hiiragi found it amusing and smirked slightly.
“Then I’ll take you up on your offer and interpret it how I see fit. As you are planning to help me with this, that is.”
“Good to know.”
“Good it is… Then, I’ll contact you if anything comes up—later.”
As if her need was met, Hiiragi stood up and started to leave the classroom,
but paused right at the door and turned back.
“Thanks, Kazari.”
“Oh, yeah, sure.”
Caught off guard by her surprise gratitude, I awkwardly raised my hand in acknowledgment.
She smiled slightly at that and finally left the room.
“Phew…”
Being left alone, I let out a deep sigh.
There was one thing I hadn’t told Hiiragi, or let’s say that as one thing I cannot tell her. That is, —the twisted side of Katase, that the person in question herself made me promise to keep a secret.
Given Katase’s current state, I wonder if she could even be so easily cornered by someone like Tachibana?
I don’t know the extent of Tachibana’s malevolence, so I have no other option than to envision it… But from what I feel, it wouldn’t go that simple as she thinks.
…Regardless, what I had got to do is already decided. I have to back her up much as possible.
Luckily, Tachibana sits next to me, giving me the perfect vantage point to keep an eye on her.
