Chapter 38: A GooD PersoN
If-only scenarios became reality. In the softball second-year division, we… no, the A-team led by Ryougoku, achieved a splendid victory.
As the time after school arrived. The classmates gathered in the classroom discussing things like “Where should we go?” “From what time?” “All-you-can-eat sounds good, doesn’t it?” It’s all about the post-tournament party. If it was an after party for the culture festival or sports festival, then it still made sense. But having a party after a sports event, just what’s the deal with that?
Ignoring the enthusiasm of my over-the-moon classmates, I quietly leave the classroom alone.
“Aren’t you going to be a part of it?” Well, obviously, I’m not going to be a part of that. After all, no one even invited me to… well, even if they had, I wouldn’t go have went anyway. Seriously, I’m not —crying or anything, —got it?
Given how comfortable the chill of the classroom made anyone feel, the stuffy heat in the hallway was just as unbearable. Those wearing glasses must be having a hard time with them fogging up.
And so, I ponder about things that couldn’t matter any less, I walk.
Then, as I was about to reach the start of the stairs, my feet stop. Well, more accurately, they were stopped.
Someone had grabbed on to my right shoulder. Oddly enough, I know who that someone is.
“What’s now?” I turn around and ask briefly, facing “Hiiragi” with a grim expression.
“It’s not ‘what’s now.’ It’s about the party… you should join in as well.”
Hearing Hiiragi’s unexpected words make my heart skip a beat.
Even someone like me… being invited to something like —no, that’s not it! I—I’m not happy about it or anything, got it?!
“Did you come out just for that? Also, to think you were able to figure out my stealth go-home… what’s this now? Don’t tell me, you like me behind the scenes or something?”
Hiiragi’s gaze sharpens, and I quickly drop the playful act.
“…………….”
“I’m not going.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t have the qualifications to participate.”
“What kind of qualifications? Aren’t you also a member of the class. And you’re also a member of the winning team at that.”
“Well, technically… anyway, I’m not going. Sorry for turning down your invitation even after you went your way to invite me officially… well then, see you.”
I abruptly end the conversation and turn my back on Hiiragi.
“If there’s a next time… do make sure to come, okay?”
To the awkward kindness that came from behind, I wave my hand as a gesture of acknowledgment.
She’s such a good person… like truly.
