Chapter 32: A place for apology, a cause of self-satisfaction 2
We changed the place moved in the cafeteria. As it was after-school, there were no other student around, and the only sounds were the casual conversations of the cafeteria ladies.
In this almost exclusive environment, Ryogoku and I, without saying a word, chose the farthest, least sunlit corner, and sat facing each other.
“So, what did you want to talk about?” Ryogoku asked.
“Ahhh, I wanted to apologize for what happened this morning――I’m sorry.”
I placed both of my hands on the table and bowed.
“…I don’t understand. Why do you say that requires an apology? No, not just you. I don’t think anyone did anything that requires an apology this morning.”
His tone was neither sarcastic nor as if feigning ignorance. Ryogoku’s voice and manner conveyed pure confusion.
Was he serious? When I looked up at him. His expression seemed to say, “What’s wrong? Come on, explain fast.”
“Are you serious?”
“Serious? I really don’t understand why you think you need to apologize.”
“…As I told you, I asked Katase to reject me. But in the end, all turned out the way it is now… and I’m apologizing for that especially.”
My explanation was clear enough, even if not detailed. However, Ryogoku’s face still showed confusion.
“Just to confirm, ‘the way it did’ means to say that Katase-san accepted your, Kazari-kun’s confession, right?”
“Yeah.”
“And in where do you need to apologize for that?”
“Why you mean? Ryogoku, don’t you have feelings for Katase?”
“I do. But how is that even relevant?”
He answered every question with question, it’s as if he is not understanding my point.
Ryogoku wasn’t stupid. In fact, he was the kind of person who would catch on to things which even others might miss.
He’s doing this on purpose, without a doubt. I don’t know why, but…
“It’s very relevant. Even it was a fake confession, but Katase ignored that. I don’t mean to apologize on her behalf, but… things didn’t go as I told you they would. That’s why I’m apologizing. But please don’t worry, I plan on breaking up with Katase as soon as things settle down. I can’t keep causing you, Ryogoku, any more trouble after all.”
I didn’t miss the slight twitch of Ryogoku’s eyebrows as I spoke.
Now, as I finished, his smile had completely vanished, replaced by an expression of displeasure.
“Now I see. It seems being with you was just a waste of my time.”
Standing up, Ryogoku looked down at me with disdain. This was the reaction I should have received from him from the start.
“A waste of time, huh… You’re right, this is my own selfish satisfaction.”
“Selfish satisfaction would be far better… You’re being way irresponsible… And one more thing.”
Ryogoku glared at me with sharp eyes――then said,
“Don’t underestimate me too much.”
With that, he walked away.
“……”
