Chapter 23: A confession based on the premise of being rejected.
Katase who lifted her face gently but immediately, looked at me with tearful eyes, tilting her head sideways.
“…Did you perhaps, fall in love with me?”
“Ah, yeah, nope, that’s not it… let me explain now.”
[TL: LMAO]
A closeness where I can feel her breath touch me, her slightly flushed cheeks, and the feverish gaze with which she was looking at me, it was becoming just too much to bear. Unable to withstand them, I turned my face away, and shift my gaze off her eyes.
“Anytime is fine… no, ideally, I want to resolve this before we enter summer vacation, but that’s just my ideal preference and doesn’t take your feelings and mental into account. So, it’s all up to you, Katase. When you feel like going to school again and actually step into the school, then —come to my class and see me.”
“…To Kazari-kun’s, class?”
“That’s right. Also, it’d be helpful if you could let me know in advance —nevertheless, from here on is the crucial part. First: When I see you, I’ll come and confess to you immediately. Then I need you, Katase, to ‘turn me down spectacularly’.”
“……”
There was no response from Katase.
I glanced at her sideways, trying to gauge her expression. Just a little—maybe it’s just my imagination—but she looked a bit pissed off at that.
Even still, I continued not minding it.
“After you turn me down, tell everyone—make sure Tachibana also hears it—that you don’t have anyone you like and that you don’t plan on dating anyone right now. You can phrase it however you like. If thinking about ‘what’ words is a hassle, you can use the exact that I just said to you.”
This was the grand romantic scheme Hiiragi came up with to win over Ryogoku. Welp, what I am using is just an adaptation to it.
‘Tachibana thinks Ryogoku likes Katase. But then what about Katase?’ That’s where Tachibana’s present information stops.
Then, we just need to give her the information regarding that. It’s as simple as that.
Being in an unrequited love is frustrating. Not knowing Katase’s feelings does irritate Tachibana. Tachibana has had these previous times as well, so it’s not entirely a far-fetched theory that I thought of as well.
By having Katase publicly reject me, it creates an opportunity for Tachibana. That is, a hope that Ryogoku might give up on his crush… allowing her to believe there’s still one chance to grasp his heart. It will definitely make her think like that.
….I know this isn’t enough on its own. That’s why I am still thinking about it. Actually, I also have another move in mind. But it’s a lousy plan that involves having another ‘one person’ to become a sacrifice… but if that brings us to a resolution, I’m sure it can be went along with as well.
And surely, I’m sure even Katase would go along with it too…
“…Say, Kazari-kun.”
Katase’s voice, calling my name, had clearly dropped in tone.
“Y-Yes?”
In a timid-fearful manner, I looked back at Katase. She was puffing her cheeks slightly, glaring at me with a narrowed gaze.
