Chapter 12: A handsome man who doesn’t even see the heat from the summer as a worthy opponent.
Under the blazing sun, a softball game was going on. Us boys were giving their all, batting, pitching, and running with sweaty bodies.
Today’s PE class was together with another class. With the ball game tournament just around the corner, everyone was serious.
Each class was split into two teams: A and B.
Currently, the match was going on between A team playing against another A team, and B team playing against another B team. Just so you know, I am in team A.
See how easily he was accepted into the team, I can’t believe he goes and call himself a bocchi after that! He does not even come close to how bocchi are in real! Or such voices I can almost hear to coming towards me, so let me tell you, it’s not that I got in easily. Don’t underestimate me.
During the team selection just the other day, did you already forget that I was left out until the very end… or rather, I was forgotten.
The reason why it was that simple this time. It’s because, at that time, unlike other class that had sixteen boys, making it an even number, my class had seventeen boys, making it an odd number.
This meant each team had eight players, leaving one person out… and that just happened to be me.
Really, it was such nerve-wreaking. It wasn’t like I was ostracized; I was just simply … forgotten; just, genuinely forgotten. When they started discussing positions like ‘defence’ and ‘batting orders’, at that time, I was really in a bind. I had no idea what to do anymore at that time.
Well, in the end, Ryougoku noticed my existence and included me in his A team as a designated hitter.
Typically, a designated hitter is someone who bats in place of the pitcher. But in a high school ball game tournament, no one enforces such specific rules. It simply meant having an extra batter, that’s all.
As a matter of fact, my teammates had no expectations on me. It was only fair since I lacked the power to hit the ball out of the stadium like a foreign helper, and can just barely make contact with the ball, which is also rare.
In truth, I had just blown a golden opportunity in the previous inning with two outs and the bases loaded. Some of my teammates had even started preparing for defense as soon as they saw I was up to bat you know.
This might be the unfaltering proof that they fully trust me to be unreliable. What the heck, is it okay for me to die already?
While my teammates sweat themselves out in the field, I, as the designated hitter, was cooling off in the shade, looking towards the gym.
My incompetence isn’t something that developed recently. Moreover, what worried me more was what was happening “over there.”
The boys’ event for the summer ball games tournament was softball. While for the girls, it was basketball. Right now, the girls’ were likely to be engaged in a heated battles taking place in the gym.
That was fine. The problem was that Katase was in the opposing class.
Though our class had Hiiragi and the PE teacher was supervising so something severe might not happen per se, still, there was no guarantee Katase would be completely protected just because of that.
Even if I wish that nothing severe would not take place, Tachibana’s past records meddles in.
“But don’t worry, I’m fine, I’m really fine.”
Yesterday, Katase said repeatedly that ‘I’m fine.’ But truthfully, I couldn’t fully trust those words. Still, I had no intention of criticizing her decisions.
All I can do, was only to pray. Pray that she would somehow endure until summer break.
And hope… that time would solve everything during that long vacation.
“—-You’re making quite a troubled expression, Kazari-kun,”
Hearing my name, I turned around.
Standing there was the presence of Ryougoku, who was defying the extreme summer heat with a refreshing bright smile on his face.
