Chapter 28: Casual Walk 2
Taro barked ‘Wan!’ along, imitating his owner.
Walking along the riverside path with Katase and Taro, the three of us.
It was quite enjoyable to walk with someone together. That’s the new discovery I made. Walking besides Katase, I learned that I usually walk unusually fast, as I matched Katase’s pace.
It’s something I wouldn’t notice on my own. While I might blend in perfectly with the fast-paced pedestrian traffic at Shibuya’s scramble crossing, here, I’m a bit too fast. It’s an insight I gained and understood because of this.
Even though it’s the same road and the same scenery, yet, by just simply adjusting my pace changes my perspective completely. It goes to show how the experiences and knowledge a person begets in their lifetime can be so limited in comparison. The world is felt so vast that it seems to go on and on.
Well, discussing about the world solely based on our walking speed might seem a little —too foolish per se.
As I mentally reprimanding myself for constantly blowing things out of proportion, my gaze unexpectedly met Taro’s, who was walking ahead of us.
He was waiting for Katase and me, who were lagging behind. Maybe once we get there, he will again go to his next checkpoint. This has been happening repeatedly since a while ago.
People often say that pets resemble their owners, but maybe that’s actually a false? To even make me question that, Taro was that lively instead.
“Do you often come here for walks, Kazari-kun?”
“Yeah, sort of. Not every day, but I come here now and then.”
“I see. You seemed quite friendly with grandma. Did you become close while coming over here?”
“Well, something like that.”
I gave a vague answer because I felt hesitant to speak the truth out loud.
“Sorry, I pretended not to know, but I actually already knew. Kazari-kun, you helped grandma that time, didn’t you?”
“You knew? Then what was it, did you want to see if I’d boast about it?”
“Um… just a little, I guess.”
Katase smiled apologetically, forming a ‘C’ shape with her right thumb and index finger.
“Rather why do you even know about that?”
“Grandma was actually talking happily about it. How you’re such a kind-hearted benefactor. Even now your name would appear in her mouth quite a lot you know.”
“Eh, what’s that? Am I already a celebrity in the Katase house-elderly. Ugh~ so troublesome”
“Haha, you’re so casual. Are you perhaps trying to hide your embarrassment?”
Katase teased, covering her mouth with her hand. She started off shy, but as we conversed, she gradually became mischievous and sly teasing. I noticed this side of her when we went out with Hiiragi and the others.
Perhaps the way she is acting right now, in front of me, is her true self.
“Grandma was really grateful. And just as much, even I am grateful towards you. Thank you for helping grandma at that time, Kazari-kun!”
“I would’ve felt nice if I had been thanked sincerely from the beginning itself… but since, I was tested a bit first.”
“Sorry, sorry. You see, I’m a bit, kind of twisted. So, please do forgive me?”
While keeping up her teasing smile still, clasping her hands together she asked for forgiveness.
