Chapter 39: Lunch With Amatsuka Family (1)
“Motobu-kun!”
Miu and her mother arrived at the station where we were supposed to meet.
Miu-san spotted me and waved, running towards me.
“Hello, Amatsuka-san.”
“Hello!”
Her dazzling smile was truly precious.
“You’re Motobu-kun, right? Miu always talks about you. I’m her mother, Rin Amatsuka. Thank you for coming today.”
“Oh no, thank you for inviting me.”
She doesn’t look like she’s in her forties at all. My mind couldn’t quite process it. Her outfit gave off a chic and mature vibe, but for some reason, standing next to Miu-san, she only looked like her older sister. With her great figure, she seemed to be in her late twenties.
And just like that, it was DNA-level proof that Miu-san inherited her mother’s angelic features. They’re both…quite well-endowed…
“Well, let’s get going!”
“Mom, you’re too excited.”
“Of course I am! I took a day off just to have lunch with my daughter’s future husband!”
“Mom, stop!”
Oh, she really is Miu-san’s mother. The way she talks and the energy she gives off are a lot like Miu-san’s.
Seeing a glimpse of their everyday life warmed my heart.
“Oh, Mom…Sorry about that, Motobu-kun.”
“No, it’s fine. It’s nice to see everyone so happy.”
“That’s right! Having fun is the most important thing.”
We walked for about five minutes from the station. During that time, Miu-san was cheerful and excited. Seeing this side of Miu-san, one she doesn’t show at school, was amusing.
I started wondering why I was even here. Watching these two enjoy a meal together felt like it was all that was needed. It made me appreciate how special family bonds are.
“I’ve been curious about this place for a while.”
“As soon as I scheduled this lunch with Motobu-kun, Mom rushed to make a reservation. She’s too efficient.”
“It’s always better to secure things early. You don’t want to miss good opportunities.”
“How much were you looking forward to this?”
“Miu, you were the same! You even did a little fashion show by yourself in front of the mirror, wondering what to wear!”
“W-well, that’s just basic manners, isn’t it?!”
Miu-san’s face turned red in embarrassment. I understand how she feels. As someone who often gets scolded by Chika for what I wear, I know how important basic manners are. Yeah, definitely.
We entered the cafe, and we were ushered to our seats. The place had a gentle aroma of coffee, fitting for a coffee shop. It wasn’t overly trendy like a Seattle-style cafe, but the calming interior and design gave a comforting feel.
“This is their third branch, apparently.”
“It doesn’t feel like a chain or franchise at all. It’s impressive they’ve opened a third cafe.”
“I heard some famous writers visit here too.”
“Famous writers?”
“Kusunoki Jun.”
Miu-san and I exchanged glances. Kusunoki Jun is Naoto-san. He’s a well-known writer, though the public often speculates that he might be a woman. He writes famous works like the “Cross-Dressing Detective Series”, some of which have been adapted into films. However, he never shows his face in the media.
Kusunoki Jun writes novels that resonate with both men and women, his mix of humor and mystery giving off an air of charisma that only a novelist can have.
And only Miu-san and I know Kusunoki Jun’s true identity.
“Oh my, you two seem to have your own little world going on. Am I being left out?”
“No, we were just remembering a conversation we had about Kusunoki Jun’s work the other day.”
“Y-yeah, Mom!”
At that moment, our food arrived, and the three of us began eating.
“Mmm, this is delicious.”
With a mouthful of food and hands on their cheeks, the mother and daughter looked so happy. They look so much alike that seeing their identical expressions made me feel like coming today was worth it.
Family resemblance is amazing. Their joyful faces while eating delicious food were like mirror images of each other.
I bet the chef would be delighted to see them like this too.

Chapter 40: Lunch With Amatsuka Family (2)
“Really, Motobu-kun, you’ve been such a big help teaching me how to cook.”
We had finished eating, and now we were waiting for the desserts we had ordered. I was already full, so I just ordered coffee.
“Well, it just sort of happened, but Miu-san learns quickly, so teaching her is enjoyable for me too.”
“R-really?”
Miu-san smiled happily, her cheeks slightly flushed, probably because she was praised by me, her self-proclaimed teacher.
“Please continue to take care of Miu from now on.”
“Mom! That’s embarrassing!”
“…Sure.”
“From now on,” huh?
People can die suddenly. So, being able to stay with someone for a long time, whether good or bad, is probably a good thing.
One of the faint memories I have of my mother is her saying, “As long as you don’t die, you’ll be fine.” I used to think that relationships with parents and siblings would last a long time, just by looking at our small circle of relatives. That was my idea of “for a long time.”
But now, I can’t picture anyone staying by my side for a long time.
“Oh, excuse me. I need to take this call. It’s from my guardian.”
“Sure, go ahead.”
I stepped away to answer the call from Manoka-san. If my guess was correct, things could get troublesome if I didn’t take it now.
“Hello?” “
‘Takeru-kun!!’
Okay, it’s not an emergency. Manoka-san was acting as usual.
“…What is it?”
‘I want to hear words of love from Takeru-kun.’
“That’s sudden. Did you hit your head or something?”
‘You’re being harsher than usual!’
“It would be better for you to rest during your lunch break instead of calling me.”
‘I’d rather get a little Takeru-kun boost than sleep!!’
This had happened before. Apparently, she experiences withdrawal symptoms if she doesn’t see me for two days.
I’ve never witnessed these symptoms myself, but according to Chika, she becomes as wild as if possessed by a demon. Chika once described to me how the mascara would run down her face like black tears, creating a terrifying atmosphere, as if it were the end of the world.
“Sorry, but I’m having lunch with friends right now. Can I call you back later?”
‘You’re choosing other girls over me… boohoo…’
“Why do you assume it’s a girl?”
‘Because all your friends are girls!!’
“There are guys too, you know.”
Manoka-san can be quite a handful when she’s in this sulky mode. I might end up making Miu-san and her mom wait for a long time. I’ll just have to deal with her later.
“I’ll cook your favorite dish when you get back, so please behave until then.”
‘Really?! Yay!! Manoka Onee-chan will do her best at work!!’
That was easy.
I managed to calm her down, and she happily hung up. Well, I was planning to cook for her anyway, so it’s not a problem.
“Sorry about that.”
“It’s fine. I’m sure guardians have their own worries.”
“Well… yeah.”
It seemed Miu-san had stepped out too, so now it was just Rin-san and me. It felt a bit awkward.
“The stuffed cabbage rolls were delicious.”
“Stuffed cabbage rolls?”
But Rin-san had pasta earlier. The conversation seemed to have taken a sudden turn.
“I’m talking about the stuffed cabbage rolls Miu made for me the other day. You taught her how to make them, right?”
“Oh, right. Yes, I did.”
Now that she mentioned it, I did teach her that before. I also taught her some variations afterward.
“Stuffed cabbage rolls were the first dish I ever cooked for my husband. It made me remember a lot of things from the past.”
“There are times when you just get nostalgic.”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Rin-san gazed out the window. I didn’t know what memories she was thinking of, but I could tell that she was looking at something she had lost.
“Oh, by the way, Miu’s birthday is on August 18th, so keep that in mind, okay?”
“…Alright.”
She turned her gaze from the window back to me and said that. I wasn’t sure why she suddenly mentioned it.
“Sorry for the wait, Motobu-kun. What were you and Mom talking about?”
“Oh, that’s a secret between us, right, Motobu-kun?”
“That’s not fair!”
“Ahaha…”
After that, for some reason, Miu-san ended up sitting next to me while Rin-san took pictures of us. Throughout the meal, the atmosphere of the Amatsuka family was warm and pleasant, making it an enjoyable time.
