Chapter 122: Going to the Maid Cafe (1)
“Welcome back, my ladies and gentlemen♡”
“So, so cute!”
“This, this is a maid?!”
“I-I’ve never been to a maid cafe before…”
“…For now, let’s just go in.”
Right now, I’m at a maid cafe with Amatsuka-san, Kurose-san, and Momohara, the four of us together.
A smiling maid greets us warmly as we head inside.
Even though it’s the day after Miaki-san had a lot to say to me, the reason we’re here isn’t just to enjoy the maid cafe. We’re also scouting it out as a reference for our own maid cafe at the school festival. It’s part of our research.
“The cafe is so cute. Excuse me, Maid-san, we’re planning to run a maid cafe for our school festival. Would it be okay if we took some pictures for reference?”
“I’ll confirm with the head maid. For now, please take a seat.”
“Okay! …The maids are so cute…”
Amatsuka-san looks like she’s having fun.
Kurose-san, on the other hand, is staring seriously at the maids’ uniforms.
“I’ve done some research on maid outfits, but making them ourselves seems like a challenge.”
“Can’t we just buy ready-made ones, Touka-chan?”
“That would be difficult with our budget. They range in price, but on average, one costume costs about 5,000 yen. We’ll need at least five, maybe eight, for the festival. That would really stretch our budget…”
“Mmm…That sounds tough.”
After we decided on the maid cafe during homeroom, one of the problems we discussed in more detail was the maid uniforms.
At first, the plan was to buy cheap maid costumes and have Kurose-san’s craft team modify them.
However, even cheap ones cost about 2,000 yen. When you add in the cost of accessories to modify them, it ends up being the same. And if we need several of them, it might be better to make them from scratch. We had lots of debates like that.
On top of that, because the school festival is a school event, our homeroom teacher asked that we do something that would contribute to our growth as students.
In other words, “Don’t take the easy way out.”
“Sorry for the wait. It seems that as long as it’s inside the cafe, taking photos is fine. Just make sure to wear these visitor badges, and if you want to photograph any of the maids, please ask them first.”
The maid handed us a name-tag-like badge with a smile.
Even the way she handed it over was so polite. I almost found myself falling for her.
“If you’re ready to order, I’ll take it anytime.”
“I’ll have the ‘Heart-Pounding Pure-Pure Omelet Rice’ and a ‘Pastel cafe Latte,’ please!”
…What’s with these embarrassing spell-like names…
“I’m not that hungry…I-I’ll take this ‘Puffy Pretty Strawberry Parfait,’ then.”
Since Momohara is in charge of sweets, he ordered a parfait. I’m curious to see just how “pretty” it’s going to be.
“What about you, Touka-chan?”
“Hmm…What should I get?”
Kurose-san looked at me.
For Kurose-san, eating food that I didn’t make doesn’t really matter, taste-wise. She’s here because she’s in charge of the maid outfits, but it would feel wrong for her to just sit out.
“Kurose-san, how about trying this Cocoa Latte? It’s supposed to have cute latte art.”
“Cute…? As someone who needs to improve my femininity, that might be important! Maid-san, I’ll have the Cocoa Latte, please.”
Latte art, especially with coffee, cocoa, or matcha, is great for Instagram. I’ve looked into it before, but I’ve never actually seen it in person.
Sorry, Kurose-san, but I’ll be using this as a reference.
“Uh, I’ll have the Bear Curry, Fluffy Mochi Pancakes, and a Blended Coffee, please.”
“Certainly. Would you like the blended coffee served after your meal, sir?”
“S-Sir…Yes, please bring it after the meal.”
“Certainly, sir♡”
“M-Maid-san, I’m a guy too, though…”
“Huh?! Oh, no! I’m so sorry! You’re just so cute, I thought you were a girl!”
Here we have the lively and angelic Miu Amatsuka, the cool beauty Kurose-san, the adorable Momohara, and plain ol’ me.
Well, it’s not surprising, considering Momohara is practically a boy who looks like a girl.
“Amatsuka-san, why are you giving me a thumbs-up with that smug look?”
“Because cuteness is justice!”
Recently, Amatsuka-san has been teasing Momohara a lot for his cuteness.
Though he was shy and nervous at the start of high school, Momohara has become quite comfortable in class now. More so than I have, honestly.
“Sometimes, I get jealous of you, Momohara-san. How are you so cute? I’m so envious.”
“Wha?! K-Kurose-san! Don’t tease me like that!”
Everything feels so peaceful.
And Kurose-san probably means it seriously. It’s just the way she is.
A cute boy who is envied by one of the class’s beauties. It’s easy to see why some romantic comedies feature cute boys as main heroines.
Once the school festival is over, I’ll make sure Momohara wears a maid costume.
I made up my mind.

Chapter 123: Going to the Maid Cafe (2)
“Thank you for waiting!”
The dishes and drinks everyone ordered arrived. The bear-shaped curry was actually quite cute. It felt a little embarrassing, but at the same time, it almost felt too precious to eat.
“For the lady who ordered the ‘Exciting Pure-Pure Omelette Rice,’ I will now cast a spell.”
“Yes! Please do!!”
Amatsuka-san’s eyes were sparkling. I guess she really likes things like this.
“If you don’t mind, could you also tell me your name, my lady? Since we’re here, it would make the experience more special.”
“My name is Miu Amatsuka.”
“Since your name is written as ‘Angel’ in kanji, why not have the maid call you ‘Angel-chan’?” Kurose-san suggested.
“Uh, no, that’s too much, Touka-chan…”
“That sounds cute! Let’s go with that!”
“What?!”
It was rare for Kurose-san to suggest something like that. While I was still surprised, the maid, getting into the mood, started her spell.
“Here we go! ‘Delicious, delicious, moe-moe-kyun for Angel-chan!’ My lady, please enjoy your meal!”
“Hehe, hehe. What should I do? The maid is too cute.”
“So, this is a maid’s true magical incantation…This is really useful!”
Angel-san was giggling uncontrollably, while Kurose-san earnestly studied what was happening. It seemed like the girls were way more excited about being at a maid cafe than I expected.
“If we’re here anyway, why not have Momohara-san…or should I say Momohara-chan, wear a maid outfit too?”
“What are you saying, Motobu-kun?!”
“You can try on maid outfits here, too, my lady…or sir,” the maid added mischievously.
“Maid-san, you’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you? I’m a guy! A man!!”
Momohara was pouting angrily, but there was no sense of intimidation coming from him. The maid seemed to enjoy teasing Momohara-chan. This maid knows what she’s doing…
“Try them on, huh…Angel-san, it would be helpful for research if you could try one on.”
“Huh? Me?!”
“Could you also try it on, Momohara-kun?”
“Motobu-kun?!”
“Well, since your shoulder width and height are similar to what we need, it would be helpful as a reference for making the maid outfits. It’s a reasonable decision.”
“That makes sense. I do need some data for the costumes.”
“Uh, uh…Well then, my lady…I mean, sir, and Angel-sama, please come with me.”
“…Hey, Kurose-san, isn’t that maid a little…off? Is this okay?”
“Why are you asking me…?”
“…Yeah, you’re right.”
Forgive me, Momohara. Even so, I really want to see you blush in a maid outfit.
“Still, I didn’t expect them to take you away right after the food arrived.”
“It’ll get cold.”
“Well, with that maid, I guess there’s no helping it. Let’s just accept it.”
That maid did seem a little strange. In the meantime, I’ll take some pictures of everyone’s food and drinks.
Since maid cafes offer a different kind of service than usual cafes, they really put effort into presentation.
“This curry is definitely from a ready-made package.”
Since not everyone was here yet, I decided to taste just a little of the curry roux as a sample.
“Ready-made, is it? I can’t really tell the difference in flavors, so I envy you for being able to tell.”
“Well, it’s just something you pick up when you cook.”
Given the nature of a maid cafe’s business, it’s unlikely they get a lot of curry orders. The advantage of using store-bought curry roux is that it’s easy to prepare in bulk.
“In a cafe like this, adding a little extra to ready-made curry is a smart move. It’s convenient, and you can prepare it quickly per order. Ready-made food often gets a bad reputation for being lazy or ‘not real cooking.'”
It’s not smart to make a large amount of curry when you don’t know how much will be sold. The reason I ordered the bear-shaped curry was to check if it was store-bought.
Before coming to this cafe, I did a little research online about maid cafes. I wanted to decide whether we should prioritize detail or authenticity for our school festival.
“Kurose-san, your cocoa latte art bear is also pretty cute.”
“So this is what it means to have ‘feminine charm.'”
“Well, I don’t know about that.”
I had expected it to be a 3D latte art, but it wasn’t.
“When I heard ‘latte art,’ I imagined leaves or hearts, but you can make a bear too, huh?”
“Apparently, you don’t need to use a toothpick for leaves, hearts, or roses, but it does take practice.”
“Watching Angel-san in a maid outfit making latte art in front of customers would be a good performance. It could be really cute.”
“Ah, you’re right.”
Even though we’re only open for two days, having the maids perform latte art in front of the customers might be a great touch. I’ll need to look into that further.
