Chapter 92: Emotions, Tools, and Loyalty
The car interior was unbearably quiet. Only the low rumble of the engine and the faint sound of the tires on the road reached their ears. The black car sped through the city without slowing down, heading into the darkness of the night.
Luna and Aizawa Konoha sat side by side in the back seat. A silent man gripped the steering wheel in the driver’s seat, aiming for their destination. The air inside the car was frigid, a different kind of coldness enveloping the two of them, distinct from the comfort of the air conditioning.
Outside the car window, the city lights gradually faded, and the buildings appeared as dark silhouettes. As they progressed, the number of streetlights decreased, and instead, they encountered more rugged roads and buildings that resembled ruins.
Luna silently checked the gun in her hand, feeling its hard texture. Each time her fingers traced the smooth metal surface, the tension deep within her heart seemed to ease slightly.
But this calm did not last long.
“You, too, are loyal to Hiro-sama.”
Luna whispered these words. Her voice, low and suppressed, seemed to pierce the quiet air.
Konoha turned her gaze toward the window, barely moving her eyebrows.
“Of course. It’s my duty.”
“Duty…”
Luna smiled slightly. Her smile was cold and slightly sarcastic.
“Yes, duty.”
Konoha didn’t move her face but only directed her gaze at Luna. Her sharp eyes held a questioning expression.
“Isn’t it different for you?”
“For me?”
Luna frowned and narrowed her eyes.
“For me, Hiro-sama is…”
She paused once, gazing at the darkness outside. There, the desolate road and the eerie ruins loomed vaguely.
“Everything.”
Luna’s voice was flat, but her suppressed emotions seeped through. Konoha tilted her head slightly.
“Is that enough reason to be loyal?”
Luna glanced at Konoha and exhaled softly.
“I don’t need a reason. To fulfill Hiro-sama’s wishes—that’s all.”
“Blind obedience…”
Konoha spoke these words briefly, with a hint of provocation.
“What’s wrong with blind obedience?”
Luna answered immediately, her voice cold and sharp.
Konoha seemed to smile slightly, but the smile was so faint it disappeared in an instant.
“If that’s what you think, then so be it.”
She said this and turned her eyes forward again.
Once again, silence fell upon the car interior. But this silence was not comfortable; it was like a taut thread, somehow unstable.
Eventually, Konoha spoke again.
“You intend to give him ‘everything,’ but sometimes it seems like you’re too emotionally invested.”
Luna’s face clouded at these words.
“Emotions have nothing to do with it.”
“Really?”
Konoha’s voice carried a hint of doubt.
“Our duty is to protect him. Nothing more, nothing less.”
“I understand.”
Luna answered quietly, but frustration flashed in her eyes.
“But sometimes, in front of him, that doesn’t work, does it?”
Konoha’s voice carried a probing tone.
“…What do you mean?”
“You must feel it, too.”
Konoha continued, her gaze fixed on the window.
“In front of him, we can’t be just tools. We’re not just beings that follow orders.”
Luna remained silent, gazing outside for a while. The car advanced on the rugged road, and the interior shook slightly.
“It’s because he’s special.”
Finally, Luna spoke. She gripped the hem of her skirt tightly.
“He’s not just a human. His presence, his intellect, his… everything is different from others.”
Konoha narrowed her eyes.
“The more perfect he is, the more we feel our own imperfections.”
“Imperfections…”
“In front of him, we should be tools… but there are moments when we’re not. Don’t you feel that, too?”
Luna didn’t answer, but her silence was the answer.
“Emotions are unnecessary for us.”
Konoha continued her words quietly.
“If we have emotions, it clouds our ability to protect him. We’re just tools. Beings that follow orders and carry out our missions… that’s what we’re supposed to be.”
Luna exhaled softly and furrowed her brow.
“But in front of Hiro-sama, we can’t do that.”
Konoha nodded. Her expression, usually cold and stern, now showed a slight wavering.
“He reminds us that we’re women. That’s his power.”
“Is that weakness?”
“No, it might be a kind of strength.”
Luna looked at Konoha in surprise.
“That’s why it’s also dangerous.”
Konoha said this decisively and turned her eyes forward again.
The man in the driver’s seat spoke briefly.
“We’ve arrived at our destination.”
A dilapidated building appeared in the darkness. The air inside the car became even more tense, and the two of them, without exchanging words, prepared themselves.
As soon as the car stopped, Luna and Konoha looked at each other, nodding briefly.
“Let’s go.”
Luna’s voice echoed coldly, but determination shone in her eyes.
