Chapter 89: Aizawa’s Nostalgia ②
The room is characterized by its sterile white walls, cold fluorescent lights, and pristine vinyl tiles on the floor—an embodiment of orders and discipline itself.
At the center of the room lies a strangely colored space. Wooden blocks are scattered on a large carpet, and a small table and chair set are placed there. This space, in contrast to the rest of the room’s sterility, exudes a warmth that seems to mask the room’s true nature, but it is an obviously artificial warmth.
In the corner of the room is a black window, behind which is an observation room. Researchers on the other side of the glass monitor and record every situation.
As Konoha enters the room, she takes a brief moment to survey the entire space. To her eyes, everything seems artificial. It is only natural; this “playroom” is merely a set designed to make Adam appear like a normal child.
“Konoha, begin your mission.”
A cold voice instructs her through the earpiece embedded in her ear.
Konoha replies briefly, “Understood,” and then turns her gaze toward the boy at the far end of the room.
Adam is playing with the wooden blocks. He sits on the white carpet, carefully stacking each block with his small hands. The texture of the blocks feels handmade, warm, and inviting, complementing the pastel-colored patterns on the carpet.
The boy’s expression is one of intense focus. His blue eyes, concentrated and shining, make minute adjustments to the position of the blocks.
Konoha observes him expressionlessly for a while. In her heart, which has been taught to remain calm, she feels a slight movement of emotion that should remain still.
“Do you think these blocks are just a game?”
She recalls the words her father said in the corridor.
“Games are a way to measure his emotional and ability growth. It’s important for you to stimulate him as his playmate.”
Konoha keeps these words in the back of her mind as she approaches Adam.
“What are you doing?”
Konoha asks him in a monotone voice, and Adam raises his face in surprise.
“Konoha-oneechan!”
He jumps up, his voice full of excitement, and points to the tower of blocks. His movements are innocent, as if he had been waiting for Konoha’s arrival.
“Look! I was able to build it so high without it collapsing!”
Konoha confirms the tower with a glance and replies coldly.
“What’s so special about that?”
Adam tilts his head slightly but maintains his smile.
“Because it’s amazing for me!”
Konoha frowns at his words, unable to find meaning in the word “amazing.”
“Ridiculous.”
At her unintentional remark, Adam looks at her quizzically, but without showing any concern, he takes two blocks in his hands and offers them to Konoha.
“Hey, Konoha-oneechan, you try it too!”
Konoha stares at his action for a moment, hesitating whether to accept the blocks. But the voice of the researchers, heard through her earpiece, prompts her to act.
“If Adam invites you, accept. Pretend to react naturally.”
Following the command, Konoha nods slightly and takes the blocks.
“What do I do?”
“Like this,” Adam demonstrates a simple action, but to Konoha, the act feels strangely difficult. Watching his fingertips move playfully, stacking each block, a restlessness stirs within her heart.
“It’s fun!”
At Adam’s words, Konoha unconsciously tilts her head.
“I don’t understand what ‘fun’ means.”
But Adam maintains his smile, unbothered by her cold words.
“Then I’ll teach you!”
He gently takes Konoha’s hand and guides her to stack the blocks. The warmth of his small hand touches her cold body, and for a moment, she feels a tightening sensation in her chest.
The tower they build together is crooked and not aesthetically pleasing, but Adam seems satisfied with it.
“Wow! Konoha-oneechan, you’re good at this!”
Konoha listens to his words intently, feeling something spreading in her heart. However, she lacks the words to describe this sensation.
A voice is heard through her earpiece.
“Now, take his hand. Observe how he reacts.”
Konoha follows the instructions and takes Adam’s hand. His small hand fits perfectly into hers, and the warmth once again disturbs her heart.
“Thank you, Konoha-oneechan! Let’s do this again together!”
Adam’s words, spoken with a smile, leave something more than just a command in her. It might be the first “emotional stir” Konoha has ever felt.
