- Chapter 9: The Woman in the Robe
After miraculously fending off three villains, a self-indulgent Shion approached the woman to check on her.
“Are you okay?”
“Of course I am! Even without your help, I could have handled those men myself!”
Shion, who had probably experienced a once-in-a-lifetime fear and despair, spoke to the woman with deliberate gentleness. However, her response was surprisingly bold, contrasting her earlier state of terror where she couldn’t even talk.
“So, that’s how it is…”
“And what’s with that self-satisfied look? You just drew your sword and threatened them; you didn’t do anything! It’s utterly nonsensical!”
“Oh, oh…”
Her critique hit the nail on the head.
Though a bit deflated by her piercing observation, Shion managed to maintain his composure while responding.
“Looks like you’re fine then. I’ll be on my way. Be careful on these deserted streets at night.”
“Wait a minute! Leaving a fragile lady like me here, are you out of your mind? Are you even a man?”
Despite her earlier claim of being able to handle the men, she now referred to herself as a ‘fragile lady.’
“What do you want from me, then?”
“I’m allowing you to escort me to the town market. You should be grateful!”
“…That’s an honor.”
Her audacity was remarkable, considering she was just immersed in fear, silently praying for help, and still unable to stand up due to the remaining terror.
“(So she just wants me to walk her to town…)” Shion sighed and agreed to her request. In truth, he didn’t find it bothersome at all.
The woman before him acted as if the recent events were nothing, but Shion knew that a fragile woman couldn’t have possibly gone through such an ordeal unscathed.
It could lead to a lifelong trauma, perhaps leaving her unable to face the public again, or worse, driving her to end her own life.
It wasn’t hard to imagine all this.
Therefore, he had no objections to escorting her to town to reassure and protect her.
He wouldn’t think twice about it if he was the only one who could help someone in need. That was Shion Kurosaki’s innate sense of justice, conscience, and conviction.
“Well then, let’s go. I’ll guide you to town.”
“Are you serious? Can’t you see? I can’t even stand up yet because my legs are still weak! Think before you speak! You’re such an infuriating man. Just stand there looking foolish until I can stand up!”
“(…Maybe I should just go home now.)”
It was the moment when Shion Kurosaki’s steadfast belief almost wavered.
