- Chapter 5: The Homeroom Teacher
After all the day’s classes ended, Shion headed to the document storage used by teachers at the edge of the main school building.
He was there because his homeroom teacher, Lina Lestia, had asked him to “come to the document storage after school to help carry some documents.” She needed his help to prepare for the next day’s class.
Shion often helped with Lestia’s class preparations, not because he held a position like the class president or was officially appointed as her assistant, but because Lestia personally favored him.
There’s a reason why Lestia took a liking to Shion.
Her classes revolve around plant-related magic, which doesn’t involve practical or academic exams at Crawford Magic Academy. Moreover, plant magic is less popular than other fields, and there are fewer related careers. As a result, most students need to take her classes more seriously.
While other students would use her class time to prepare for other lessons or simply sleep, Shion Kurosaki took her classes seriously.
His knowledge of magic is extensive, and he can follow only some classes attentively.
However, this only applies to the magic subjects he had previously studied and found interesting.
He was primarily interested in magic useful in combat, basic elemental magic, or magic that looked impressive. He never voluntarily studied other types of magic.
Plant-related magic was outside his interest until he enrolled in the academy, mainly because he didn’t find it visually impressive.
But fundamentally, he enjoys learning new magic. After attending Lestia’s plant magic class for the first time, he began to take it seriously.
Lestia always taught with sincerity and enthusiasm. Even when most students ignored her class, she never cut corners and tried to make her lectures understandable, interesting, and engaging.
She would be visibly pleased when asked questions about the class content, showing her happiness that someone was interested in her teachings.
Shion liked “people who are dedicated and take pride in their work, even if others do not appreciate them.”
Despite being undervalued, the magic Lestia taught, such as “magic to grow and multiply various plants” and “alchemy for creating medicinal plant ingredients,” undoubtedly served a valuable purpose.
That’s why Shion took her classes seriously. He believed that her classes were worth attending with full attention.
While maintaining his composed demeanor, he focused on the lectures, took notes, and often visited Lestia after class to clarify anything he didn’t understand.
Since no other student apart from Shion visited Lestia to discuss the class, he naturally became the student with whom she interacted the most.
There was a time when Shion told Lestia, “I like your classes.”
For Lestia, who taught earnestly yet felt unnoticed and unappreciated, struggling not to lose hope despite the indifference of her students, Shion’s words were incredibly comforting. That day, she went home and couldn’t help but tear up.
Because of such history, Shion, who had the most interaction with Lestia in Class C and understood her well, was often asked by her for various tasks.
He was not obligated to accept these requests, but Shion willingly took on tasks Lestia asked of him.
