Volume 2- Chapter 13: A Miracle
It was Monday.
I called the president’s smartphone to let inform him/her know I’d be a little late, and then I drove to Sakuragi Mika’s address. (T/N: No gender was given.)
I don’t know where she lives, so I’m headed to the cemetery where her remains might be buried.
While waiting for the red light to change, I quickly opened the status screen for the wizard’s exam. Sakuragi Mika’s name remains grayed out, unchanged. It only indicates that the mission has been cleared, not whether she’s alive or dead.
“It’s daunting, but it’s better to know sooner rather than later.”
I think Mika is dead. She’s supposed to die ten years from now. That’s her lifespan. I understand that, but I can’t bring myself to accept it. Just before returning from the time leap, I was naked in the hospital bathroom. The damp warmth and the scent of her shaved pubic hair are still lingering with me.
I’m afraid to find out, but I know that I won’t be able to move on until I do. Even if it makes me feel worse, I need to know.
A journey that would have taken two hours by bus, subway, and JR only took me half an hour by car. As I drove, I thanked my father, who had made me get my driver’s license during university. I stopped at a flower shop on the street to buy some flowers and a Japanese sweet bean cake at the wagashi (traditional Japanese confectionery) shop next door before arriving at the cemetery.
It wasn’t a holiday like equinoctial week or Bon Festival. There were no visitors at the cemetery on a Monday morning. My feet led me without hesitation to the block where my destination was located. I stopped in front of the Sakuragi family grave. I hesitated to look at the name engraved on the stone plaque. I closed my eyes, unable to muster the courage to read it.
I knelt down and touched the cold stone plaque. Starting from the left, I traced the more than 20 engraved posthumous names with my finger. There are people who can identify mahjong tiles by touch alone, but I don’t have that skill. The newest posthumous name on the far right… could this be ‘The Spirit of Mika’?
I opened my eyes. I looked at the characters for ‘Mika’, but I couldn’t bring myself to look up.
If only there could be a response from the other side…
I whispered her name, seeking a foolish escape from reality.
“Mika…”
‘What do you want, Stalker-kun?’
I longed to hear that voice, but of course, the gravestone wasn’t the one that answered.
I remained crouched there for a while, tracing the characters on the stone plaque. In the end, I couldn’t bring myself to confirm her fate. I placed the flowers in front of the grave and joined my hands in prayer. Then, I turned my back on the grave and left.
“What a coward I am.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I felt ashamed of myself. I lowered my gaze to the stone floor and made my way back.
She was just “someone I shaved down there”. That’s all she was when I put it into words. She was a woman I had only spent a few trivial hours with, indulging in adult play. According to my online research, shaving pubic hair wasn’t uncommon in sexual play.
After such play, one wouldn’t usually worry about the other person afterward. My relationship with her was shallow, and there was little difference between her and a stranger I happened to pass by. If it weren’t for the status screen and the news, I wouldn’t be so disturbed. Maybe I’m just being childish, but I was certain that I would never forget her for the rest of my life.
As I approached the exit of the cemetery, I heard the lively voices of a child approaching.
“Mom, were you sick before you got married?”
A child was asking her mother. Her voice was loud and cheerful, dispelling the gloomy atmosphere of the cemetery.
“Yes, I had bone cancer. Even with surgery, there was no hope of recovery.”
“But you’re fine now, right? Is it because of Dad?”
“No, your father was no help. When the surgery failed, he wanted to perform euthanasia on me and then kill himself. When he confessed that to me, I was so shocked.”
“Euthanasia?”
I was surprised to hear this. Hiding behind a signboard that showed a map of the cemetery, I quietly spied on the child and the woman.
“There was a kind stalker-kun.”
“There was this kind Stalker-kun.”
The woman was holding the hand of a child who was smaller than Sugumi. They walked side by side, their voices cheerful as they passed by the signboard. I couldn’t see their faces clearly, but the woman had a slender figure and her long hair was tied in a ponytail.
“A stalker? Did you call the police?”
“Haha, yes, I did call the security guard. It brings back memories.”
All the strength drained from my body. If it weren’t for the signboard I was holding onto, I would have collapsed to my knees.
It was Mika. Thank goodness she was alive…
“He didn’t do anything perverted, did he?”
“Yes, he did. When we were alone together.”
“W-what did he do? Did he kiss you?”
“No, he didn’t kiss me. But he did something really naughty. It’s too embarrassing to say.”
The child shouted “Eek!” and flailed her arms and legs.
“That’s terrible… But did that person cure you?”
“Yes, because of that Stalker-kun, my cancer disappeared. When I, a wheelchair-bound woman, suddenly started walking, the hospital was in an uproar. They performed various tests before the surgery and were surprised to find that the cancerous lesion had completely vanished. They had to do more tests to find out the cause, and I couldn’t leave the hospital for a while.”
Lesion… she must be talking about the bone cancer. So, it disappeared? Come to think of it, when I was putting her panties back on, she was moving her legs, wasn’t she?
Mika looked very healthy. She had gained some weight since I had carried her, and her body now had well-toned muscles, like a marathon runner. I was sure that her weight had increased. Could it be that the goddess’s panties had the power to perform miracles? No, that’s ridiculous.
“I’m glad. Who was that stalker-san? Do you want to meet him?”
“I know who he is and where he’s from. But he hasn’t come to see me. I think he must have his reasons, so I haven’t gone to see him either. I keep the memory of that miracle in my heart…”
As the mother and child continued their conversation, they gradually moved out of earshot. The child was probably on her way to kindergarten or elementary school, and the mother would be heading to work afterward.
Their voices faded away completely. I descended the stairs of the cemetery and stepped onto the road. I watched their retreating figures as the mother smiled gently at the child. There was no mistaking it. It was Mika, looking just as she had the day before yesterday, full of life. Her complexion was good, and she had become a kind mother, shedding the label of a woman with a tragic past.
“A miracle, huh?”
The lingering scent was overwritten by the refreshing fragrance that remained on the path. I was relieved that she was alive. For the first time, I felt grateful to the goddess. Without even seeing her face, I watched the two of them walk away until they were out of sight.
“Now, let’s go meet the next miracle.”
As I got into the car, I opened the status screen to check the next panties woman target.
A/N: Thank you for always reading this novel.
The second season, ‘Sakuragi Mika Arc’, ends here.
T/N: Seriously, WTF is the author cooking!?
