Chapter 581 Evil God Subjugation Battle: Leireine and the others’ activities
——◆◇◆◇——
After a few hours, the battle intensified. Naturally so. After all, we were positioned in the path of the evil god. Even if we reduced their numbers, it didn’t halt their advance. And as the distance between us narrowed, the fighting inevitably grew fiercer.
Our soldiers continued to unleash flames, but some managed to withstand it and charge at us, while others exploited the openings created by those attacks to strike.
Because of this, while we managed to decrease their numbers, injuries were inevitable.
And with injuries, soldiers naturally fell back, thinning our defenses.
Furthermore, our formation played a role.
Arranging ourselves in a horseshoe shape was meant to lure the enemies in and trap them in the center.
But even with such a formation, there was no guarantee the enemies would follow our plan. If they were human, they would undoubtedly be suspicious and avoid it. And even if they lacked intelligence like our current foes, they might target those closer to them—those on our flanks.
However, that assumes they’re ordinary enemies.
The enemy this time is not just any evil god… in this case, it’s the Divine Tree. The Divine Tree is advancing towards the Sacred Tree, likely because it’s aiming for powers similar to its own.
As evidence, we received reports of disturbances in the Divine Tree’s movements when we deviated from its path before. This suggests it was contemplating whether to hunt down those possessing the power of the Sacred Tree, like myself, Lilia, or Flora.
Indeed, even during the endurance battle before reinforcements arrived, there were notably more enemies wherever I, Lilia, or Flora were present. It felt like they were specifically targeting our locations, becoming more apparent as we dealt with the enemies.
The reason for this might be that, despite being mere minions, they can’t generate endlessly. They likely targeted us, who possess similar powers, to recover some of the energy consumed by creating minions.
Therefore, they’ll likely advance towards our location again this time, straight toward the center of our formation.
However, dividing our troops into three locations like this inevitably means fewer soldiers will be stationed at each point, resulting in thinner defenses. Moreover, there are fewer soldiers at the front compared to the flanks. While it’s partly because we’re here to provide assistance if needed, it’s primarily because of the strength concentrated here.
That strength being…
“Ugh… I’m still scared…”
“Leireine-sama, please pull yourself together. Come on, be sharp. You’re claiming to be a queen, right?”
“Y-Yes… th-that’s right. I… I’m a queen. Thank you, Lu-Luna.”
Elf Leireine, trembling as she watches the enemy from atop the makeshift earth walls conjured with magic, is still visibly frightened. Despite being persuaded by Edward to join us instead of staying secluded in the forest, she remains fearful.
Nevertheless, she manages to regain some composure and places her hand on her hip, gazing ahead resolutely.
“Leireine! The enemy might break through here soon. I’m leaving the defense to you!”
By dispersing our troops, our defenses have weakened, and with injured soldiers falling back, they’ve become even thinner.
Exploiting these gaps, the enemy advances relentlessly towards us. At this rate, they’ll break through our allies’ lines and reach us. Our soldiers are fighting back, but the mutants are made of plants. They can take some hits and still advance without issue.
However, we anticipated this. In fact, we’re counting on it.
Even though Zaviet’s forces number seventy thousand, they can’t sustain continuous combat indefinitely. Injuries and fatigue will take their toll. But if they fall back and leave our rear vulnerable, it’ll be meaningless. Apart from the wounded, there are others distributing flame magic tools and managing weapons or treating injuries. It’s their presence that allows us to fight smoothly without problems. If they were to disappear, the situation would deteriorate instantly.
That’s why it’s crucial to protect the injured and those aiding in combat at all costs.
Therefore, anticipating the enemy’s breakthrough from the beginning, we built walls in the rear to fortify our defenses. We decided to entrust the defense to the elves from Lilia’s homeland, led by Leireine.
Those guys, being reclusive, are incredibly skilled in defending their stronghold. If you’re deploying them for war, defense is all they’ll think about.
“Bye!”
…But can we really rely on them?
Considering she’s Lilia’s mother, it’s understandable for her to react this way, and I believe she’ll do what needs to be done when the time comes, but I can’t shake this unease.
“T-The enemy is here, but there’s no need to fear.”
Oops, slipped up.
“…As always, we’ll just take care of the ones who come attacking. Then, our allies will finish everything. Our role is to defend. Not a single enemy must pass beyond this point.”
Her demeanor as she speaks to our allies from atop the walls is commanding enough that one could readily accept her as the elven queen… if not for the recent mishap.
However, whether Leireine‘s behavior is normal or not, the elves brush it off as nothing out of the ordinary.
“Everyone, ready your weapons.”
At that command, the elves lined up along the wall shed their usual relaxed demeanor and simultaneously wielded their weapons.
And finally, the enemy broke through our defenses and appeared—thud.
The mutant creature that appeared was pierced through the chest by an arrow after taking only a few steps.
However, the enemy was a mutant made of plants. Being struck by an arrow wouldn’t halt its movement.
Yet, despite understanding this, the elves, though aiming their weapons, refrained from further attacks and simply watched.
I was about to call out to Leireine regarding this, but…
“Remain vigilant without letting your guard down.”
Immediately after Leireine’s warning, the mutant creature with the arrow lodged in it burst from the inside with a pop. Did something explode from within?
It certainly seemed that way, but if you asked what exploded, well, it was probably magic. There was no gunpowder involved, and the projectile was just a regular arrow.
Since only regular arrows were prepared, there were no special tools involved.
Despite that, the fact that such a thing could happen implies that magic was imbued just before firing the arrow. Moreover, it wasn’t done by a special individual like a general; it was just an ordinary soldier.
“I’m glad we didn’t antagonize them…”
They may seem foolish as a group, but they’re truly terrifying when provoked. Well, that’s why they managed to survive for years on the outskirts of Karakas. In fact, it’s probably natural for them to be able to do something like this.
“More enemies will come. Fight without leaving a single one standing.”
While it may not have been directly prompted by Leireine’s words, once again, enemies broke through our allies’ ranks and appeared.
However, as expected, arrows struck the enemy, and this time, countless sharp stones erupted from around the arrow lodged in its forehead, tearing through the enemy’s head.
