The Strongest Farmer in Another World ~I’m a “Farmer”, Not a Demon King! ~
Chapter 462 Report to father
“Dad, I need to talk. Is it okay for a moment?”
Afterwards, as planned, we headed to Karakas to discuss things with my father…
“Oh. …Mom.”
“Vesnar-kun! Oh my, you came over here!”
Normally, Mom would be in her room assisting with paperwork, but it seemed she was on a break and having tea with Dad in his room.
“Would you like to join us, Vesnar-kun?”
“…I told you to stop calling me ‘kun.'”
“Oh. That’s right, isn’t it? I’m sorry.”
Apologizing as I scolded her, Mom dropped her shoulders in disappointment.
Seeing her like that, Dad signaled me with his eyes to do something about it.
This is getting on my nerves somehow. Well, as long as they’re happy together…
“Well, I just came here to report, but since I’m already here, maybe I’ll take a short break. Is it okay if I join you, Mom?”
“Oh, of course! Wait a moment. I’ll get everything ready for you.”
Watching Mom stand up to prepare tea, I quietly exhaled. I took a seat, and the three maids, including Sofia, stood by the wall waiting. However, Lilia didn’t come over. She mentioned that I was only here to report and mumbled that it seemed boring, then disappeared somewhere.
“So, what’s up?”
“I’ve already sent a message, right? It’s about the Hero, that’s the report.”
Since we had a brief discussion beforehand, Dad should already have an idea of why I came here.
“Speaking of a report, considering the positions, you’re the one superior here. So, shouldn’t I be the one reporting to you?”
“Well, that might be true, but don’t worry about it. Besides, you have more actual power.”
As the ‘King,’ I technically held a higher position than Dad, who was a ‘Minister.’ However, in terms of wielding power and utilizing personnel, Dad was superior. Edward and Granny were also higher than me. I might have an edge over other officials, but I still hadn’t fully grasped control of this city, let alone this castle. Well, the people gathered here were quite assertive in their own ways.
“Anyway, considering a Hero has arrived, you seem surprisingly calm. I got worried and went to check things out myself.”
Dad looked at me with a sly smile, and I understood why he was displaying that attitude. It was because of my composure. If it were the me from a little while ago, I would’ve been anxious and troubled over any odd situation, especially one involving a ‘Hero.’ Such circumstances were particularly precarious.
However, since I didn’t show any signs of panic or haste this time, Dad wore this irritating smile, likely mocking my usual reactions.
“Well, having a Hero show up at this point isn’t that big of a deal anymore.”
In reality, I was quite concerned about the Hero. However, upon meeting them in person, they didn’t seem as intimidating as I had imagined. Of course, I didn’t plan to let my guard down, and if anything, I intended to increase caution in the future. But, when thinking about a direct confrontation, I felt like I could handle it with relative ease.
It wasn’t an unfounded illusion. It was more like I didn’t sense any ‘fear’ from that Hero. People with combat skills, whether strong or weak, often exuded an air of ‘I’m strong.’ This was a common trait, shared by regular folks and monsters like my father.
That Hero seemed to possess a strength that kept others at bay, yet his actions and words felt ordinary. Perhaps this was due to suddenly gaining power and being able to win battles easily. Consequently, his behavior and mindset remained unpolished compared to those who underwent rigorous training. It could be the confidence that came from the experience of being unbeatable, except by the Demon King. Or maybe the situation of ‘receiving power in another world’ made him see himself as the protagonist of a story.
However, if someone like that showed so many vulnerabilities, no matter how much power they had, they could be killed easily if I decided to.
“No need to worry, Vesnar. If it comes to it, I’ll defeat them for you.”
As my mom returned after preparing tea and snacks, she joined the conversation. I couldn’t help but wonder about that. I mean, it’s my mom. Letting her fight is a bit…
“No, well, I appreciate your offer to help, but regardless of whether you can fight or not, Mom, I can’t let you go into battle.”
Being on the tenth rank means she’s capable of fighting. However, that doesn’t mean I want her to fight, and besides, it’s not the kind of opponent you’d expect her to face.
“Is that so? But, if it becomes necessary, feel free to ask anytime. I’ll always be on your side.”
“Thank you. If I ever find myself needing your help, I’ll make sure to ask. Counting on you when that time comes.”
“Sure thing. Leave it to me.”
With that settled, Mom took a sip from her cup. Having grown up as a noble’s daughter and lived as a queen, her graceful manners were evident. Her impeccable movements were something I should learn from, considering the stark contrast to the man sitting next to her, nonchalantly sipping his tea.
As I observed Mom’s refined gestures, she took another sip, placed the cup back, and spoke again.
“Though I believe everything is truly fine this time. After all, he just returned a little while ago. That’s why he’s resting with me.”
“Hey, wait a minute.”
Dad, upon hearing Mom’s words, appeared a bit flustered. Unlike before, his demeanor was now a bit more abrupt.
However, in response to his rough address, Mom merely smiled and nodded. Her expression seemed to say, “I understand,” and it was evident how accustomed she had become to such situations.
But well, leaving that aside…
“Returned? Wait, did you go somewhere?”
“It was a safety check.”
Mom promptly answered my question, but is it really okay? Wasn’t Dad trying to stop her just now?
Thinking that, I glanced briefly at Dad, who remained silent, staring up at the ceiling.
…I never expected to see Dad like this.
“Safety check? What does that mean?”
“Actually, when we received the report about the hero from you, he went straight to your place. That’s when he was secretly followed, keeping an eye on him for your safety until a moment ago. It was just a precaution, in case the hero were to attack, and you couldn’t handle it.”
I had no idea… Plants and subordinates might have noticed, but I didn’t gather information about Dad. He’s not a dangerous entity requiring a report; after all, he’s my father. Additionally, my focus was on the hero, so I never expected Dad to come to the flower garden and observe us.
“Quite overprotective, aren’t you?”
Saying that, I turned my gaze towards Dad, who slowly returned his face to the front… or so I thought, as this time he turned his face to the side. Despite avoiding eye contact, he seemed to have the intention to continue the conversation, as he sighed once before speaking.
“You’re the king. If there’s a report about the hero and you’re involved, it’s only natural for me to look into it. I can’t just sit still.”
Certainly, holding the position of “Captain of the Knights” requires protecting the king. So, it’s not entirely unreasonable for him to act out of concern. Still, the fact that Dad would do such a thing is surprising.
“Well, whatever. More importantly, how was the hero?”
Dodged the question. Well, for now, I won’t press further on that matter.
“As a basic evaluation, he’s mediocre. Summoned from another world, been here for about two or three years, and most of that time was spent on combat training or something. Doesn’t seem to have a knack for strategy. Can’t speak for his combat skills, but well, he’s probably not weak.”
Not weak, but not a significant threat. That’s my assessment of the hero.
“How about the others?”
While nodding to that evaluation, Dad further inquired, and I continued to answer.
“The Holy Maiden is somewhat naive, but she’s more cautious than the hero. She seems to be a priest affiliated with the church, but she gives off more of a politician vibe.”
“Just being pretty won’t cut it, huh? Well, in a way, she’s probably also acting as the hero’s watchdog. Can’t afford to have someone with their head in the clouds.”
However, what caught my attention was her Divine Jobs. She was supposed to have two: ‘Light Mage’ and ‘Healing Mage.’ I don’t know which one is her Primary Job and which is the secondary, but having such Divine Jobs and yet displaying such a dark side in her actions intrigued me.
If you look at Lilia, you’d understand. Normally, she should emanate a calm and gentle atmosphere. That’s a lie. She wouldn’t become such a foolish person. Well, even though not as extreme as her, she should have a somewhat similar vibe. Yet, she acts differently. That bothered me a bit.
However, Divine Jobs are just a manifestation of the person’s talent and aptitude, so it doesn’t necessarily align with their personality. While they usually have a similar feel, it’s not absolute. There are those with healing talents who enjoy hurting others.
That ‘Holy Maiden’ might be a rare case where her Divine Jobs’ nature doesn’t match her personality.
“The Temple Knight is a bundle of wariness, naturally disliking Karakas and the residents here.”
“Yeah, I can see that. It’s only natural they’d feel that way about those people. If they can’t feel that way, they might be treated as heretics. Plus, if they didn’t have that foolish faith, he wouldn’t be called ‘Divine Shield,’ right?”
‘Divine Shield’—that’s one of the three tenth-rank residents in the Holy Kingdom. He seems to serve as the hero’s escort and bodyguard. The actual capabilities are unknown, but rumors say he’s never been injured in battle.
Personality-wise, as Dad put it, they have a foolish level of faith and adhere to the teachings of the church absolutely. From the brief interaction, they don’t seem like fanatics, but they might have a similar vibe. Persistently believing without wavering in faith—something along those lines.
“The mage gives off a shrewd vibe. Depending on the situation and conditions, she might betray them.”
The last person is Lina, a mage known as ‘Twin Mage.’
From our conversation and the feeling I got, she doesn’t seem to have much aversion to this city. Also, she wasn’t supposed to be affiliated with the Holy Kingdom, so with some effort, we might be able to recruit her.
“…Betrayal, huh? I wonder about that.”
“What’s up? Is there something you know?”
“No, it’s just that she might be surprisingly decent.”
I thought I might be able to bring her in, but it seems my dad’s thoughts are different. Perhaps it’s due to a difference in the amount of information we have about her. I’ll probably ask my dad to show me the information he gathered later.
