Chapter 4: Wednesday is the day to play the game of sekkusu after all.
*Poppo.
The cuckoo in that cuckoo clock placed on the wall peeks out.
“Ah, it’s seven o’clock…….”
Haruhime wakes up as if snapping back to life. I also get up from the futon at the same time.
Haruhime dries her sweaty body with the help of the pedestrian fan and stares at the corner of the wall with a red-blushed face.
There’s a reason why we played sekkusu every Wednesday.
It is the day of the week when our parents usually come home late. It was by complete coincidence that the day of the week at which our parents would happen to work late was Wednesdays.
Ever since we were little, Haruhime and I would play at each other’s home, and play the game of sekkusu without fail.
Haruhime turned her head to me again, fixing her messy hair with a comb.
“So, Tet-chan, what about your math homework?”
That brings me straight back to the topic at hand.
This game of sekkusu, when compared to these complicated math problem, is something that even more unexplored and un-allowed to touch upon. After the act is over, it disperses completely without a trace.
“…… Actually, I still haven’t finished the 32 page.”
“Me neither. And actually, I don’t understand this question on page 30.”
“That question is supposed to be done the same as the developmental questions already there in the textbook.”
“Eh, really? Show, show?”
Haruhime opened her notebook on the table as if nothing had occurred. I and Haruhime go to the same high school and are in the same class.
“Even though Tet-chan is a slacker, but got such a smart head right.”
Haruhime blurted that out as if meaning it was a complete waste of talent.
“Why don’t you put a little more effort into it?”
“Not being able to work hard is another one of my talents.”
“You are stubborn in a weird way, mou~.”
“I have got no choice, you know. I was born with it. Since, I am the type of person whose tendency is to run away from troublesome situations.”
“When you put it that way, yes, but still ……”
Once the play of sekkusu was over, Haruhime and I would go back to being regular childhood friends found just about anywhere.
Not once in the past ten years have we ever talked to each other regarding that. We would start playing sekkusu in silence and when it is time, end it.
That was the norm, and had become a part of our daily routine.
Just like in the morning, we turn on a certain TV channel. Similarly, it was something we do as a matter of course.
Naturally, I have never told anyone about this. And most probably, even Haruhime had never shared this with anyone as well.
And it’s not that we are dating, nor are we on bad terms. If you ask me whether we are friends with benifits, I would say that it is different.
Just that, keeping aside that we would play sekkusu every Wednesday, there was absolutely nothing unusual about us.
We’re just like any childhood friends.
When my parents would come home, Haruhime would say her farewell, and go back to her own home after that.
When next week comes, Haruhime will come to my room and play sekkusu with me again. That’s for sure.
