Chapter 39. Harder! Push me even harder!
Haruhime and I made our way home on foot. Even our usual route back home looked somewhat different today. Somewhat embarrassed, without much conversation, we walked home without saying a word.
Thinking of something to say, when I turned to look at Haruhime, my chest throbbed and tightened against my heart.
Her hair blowing in the wind, her arms visible through the sleeves of her school uniform, the gap between her mouth that was slightly open… when I caught a glimpse of these things, my chest would tighten without notice.
This is no good.
I can’t get the words out.
“……”
Conversations that are ordinarily normal don’t come forth easily now.
While waiting at a traffic light at an intersection near my house, Haruhime muttered as if she remembered something.
“Come to think of it, that park …….”
Looking at the small entrance gate of the small park, located across the street, Haruhime continued
“I heard it’s going to be taken out soon. Did you know about that?”
“This is the first time I’ve ever heard of this…….”
“I heard they are going to widen the road. Such a shame. We used to play there so much in the old days.”
Haruhime entered the park in a daze. After passing through this park, I could see the house of Haruhime and me.
Since, just a few blocks away, this park was where we used to play, just as she said.
“Can I play on the swings?”
Haruhime pointed at the old swing set in the corner of the park. After I nodded, she happily sat on it and began to swing.
“Do you want me to push you?”
When I asked her that,
“Un. ……!”
She nodded with a wide smile on her face.
As the swing moved, I could hear the creak of the chains. Listening to the gradually quickening sound, I slowly pushed Haruhime’s back.
“We used to play here all the time, didn’t we?”
Haruhime said to me in a slightly louder voice.
“That brings back so many memories. Even when I said it was scary and frightening, Tet-chan, being the mean one that you were, didn’t stop at all, remember.”
“Did that really happen?”
“Un, that happened, it really did! I, of course, remember it!”
In an excited tone, Haruhime shouted, ‘Push even harder!’
As I pushed her back harder, following her words, the swing gained momentum. To the point that I, the pusher, became frightened, as the swing started going back and forth at a tremendous speed eventually.
“Aren’t you scared?”
“U~unn, not at all! Rather, Even harder!”
Haruhime was laughing happily and squinting her eyes pleasantly. The sun was shining directly in front of her, shining bright red on her cheeks.
Just as I was mesmerized by the sight, Haruhime suddenly let go of my hand.
At the highest point in the air, Haruhime leaped into the air.
“HIME-CHA ……!”
I involuntarily screamed.
Haruhime’s body sailed up into the air, high in the air, one head higher than mine.
Her body bathed in a steady line of the red evening sun.
Just before she touches the ground, Haruhime dexterously bends her knees and adjusts her landing position. She landed on the ground much more lightly than I anticipated.
“…… landed safely.”
With her hands outstretched, Haruhime spun around to face me and smiled ehehehe.
“Were you surprised?”
“I was surprised. It’s bad for the heart.”
“I have grown a lot too, you know.”
“You’re quite different than you used to be.”
“Yes, I am. I am changing little by little. This park, me, and even you, Tet-chan.”
Saying this, Haruhime said, “A~h, that was fun,” and turned on her heel with her bag in hand.
Following her lead, we made our way through the park to the front of our house.
Stopping in front of the front door we said nothing to each other for a while.
“Will you be coming in ……?”
I said, looking back at Haruhime.
“Un.”
Haruhime grabbed my hand tightly and replied.
“After all, today is a Wednesday.”
