- Chapter 65: Genus and the Mirror
“Well done, Calut.”
“Uh… yeah. Thanks, Bal.”
Truly, she’s an incredible child for being able to annihilate the Demon Lord.
Moreover, Calut has taken her first step in overcoming her trauma.
I’ll have to buy her some Anpan later as a treat.
“Way to go, Calut! Blowing away the Demon Lord like that!”
“Hehe, you did well, Calut. I bet the Demon Lord never expected to be caught in a meteor.”
Alesia and Milene, who arrived in haste, forcefully pat Calut’s head as she tries to escape. To Calut, they are like elder brothers, though she’s always irked by being treated like a child. But to them, she’s probably like a little sister.
Then, two angelic voices join in.
“Baldo-sama~~”
Liena and Mariessia-sama, the two princesses.
“Sigh…”
Looks like we can safely return home now.
But just as I let out a sigh of relief…
A familiar voice, one I heard when I was banished from Fridania, cuts through the moment of peace.
“What the hell is this?!”
“My army… why has it been annihilated?!”
Prince Genus…
“Don’t mess with me! What the hell is the Demon Lord doing?!”
As Prince Genus loses his composure, a dark shadow creeps closer to him, hissing.
“What do you mean ‘my army’?!”
Is that—the Demon Lord?!
The shadow takes the form of the Demon Lord and clings tightly to Genus’s body. Is he still alive?
I lay my hand on the hilt of my sword, watching the situation unfold. What is this commotion?
“What’s with that guy! He blew away my physical form with just a throw of a stone! Calling me just an old man!”
“Ah? Like I care! It’s your own damn fault for getting beaten by such an old man. What kind of Demon Lord are you?”
“Because of you, I have been reduced to a mere soul again! Now I must enter a long slumber once more!”
“Don’t mess with me! What about my plan to restore my kingdom? You promised to kill that damn Baldo! Do it now! Hurry up!”
“Silence… you idiot prince.”
Right after the Demon Lord speaks, Genus’s body bursts into black flames.
“Guhaaa! What the hell is this?!”
“Kukuku, idiot prince… may you be forever scorched by the black flames.”
With those final words, the shadow of the Demon Lord silently crumbles away.
Genus writhes on the ground, enveloped in black flames, screaming in agony.
“It’s hot, it’s hot! Mirror! Do something!”
“Hahaha~ There’s nothing to be done.”
What’s going on?
Who is Genus talking to? Is the Demon Lord still around?
“Hurry up and do something!”
“I told you, there’s nothing I can do. It’s time for you to pay your dues, haha.”
Even as Genus converses with something, the black flames continue to burn him. His skin starts to melt and drip, and the smell of burning flesh begins to fill the air.
“Brother…”
Next to me, Lady Mariessia utters an indescribable sound. Genus has done far too much. He has brought misery to many innocent people, sometimes even taking their lives. He must face the consequences of his actions.
But I never expected it to end like this.
All I can do is gently hold Lady Mariessia’s hand. Then, Genus glares at us with incredible hatred.
“You… my Mariessia… damn it… it’s all your fault… damn it!”
Prince Genus…
His eyes begin to cloud over with a pitch-black murkiness.
“Baldo!”
Even as he writhes in agony, Genus glares at me with hate-filled eyes, as if his hatred outweighs his pain.
“Hahaha~ Finally, this moment has come. You’ve done well, Genus.”
Another strange voice flows through the air.
What is this?
“What the hell are you—’this moment’? What are you talking about—Mirror!”
“Hahaha~ I am a malevolent god. For thousands of years, I have fed on the malice of others to revive, hahaha~”
“What is this! Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn!”
Genus’s body turns pitch black, a darkness so profound it even swallows the Demon Lord’s black flames.
“Genus, your malice was delicious. Who would have thought you’d produce enough malice for me to revive?”
It seems a malevolent god has possessed Genus’s body. From the tips of his fingers to the top of his head, everything begins to be consumed by darkness. His entire body convulses, transforming into something so grotesque it’s hard to tell if he’s still human.
“Hahaha~ Fall, descend~ Now is the time. I shall revive…”
However, the malevolent god’s laughter abruptly stops.
“I… will revive… damn…”
Mixed into the voice of the malevolent god…
“Rise… damn…”
This voice!
“Damn it! I can’t end like this!”
Indeed, the voice of Genus…
“Foolish… to think you’re absorbing me… could it be… you’re more evil than a malevolent god…?”
“Huh? Stop spouting nonsense! Just shut up and stay down!”
“Impossible… what is this… ah…”
As the voice of the malevolent god fades away, Genus’s face emerges from the grotesque form.
“Huh? I feel power surging through me—here goes!”
With a swing, the grotesque form hurls something that looks like an arm. A black mass is launched at an incredible speed, smashing a rock into pieces.
“Awesome! I’m the strongest! Gyahaha! I’m unbeatable!”
Genus turns his pitch-black body towards me, smirking wickedly.
“Now, damn Baldo! I’m going to kill you! Gyahaha! Get ready!”
Drunk on his newfound power, Genus bursts into gleeful laughter.
Sigh…
Alright then.
I fix my gaze on Genus’s murky eyes.
“Genus! It’s time to settle this—come at me!”
