- Chapter 19: The Old Man Goes 'Sei!' Against the Golem Unit
Clank! Screech! Clank! Screech! Clank! Screech!
Our guerrilla unit hid in a nearby forest to observe the enemy.
Unfamiliar black objects were marching in formation, making creaking noises.
“What are those? Black figures?”
“Baldo-sama, those are likely magical golems.”
“Magical golems? They’re nothing like Sera; they sound terribly noisy and badly constructed.”
“Aaaah! General Baldo! This Nuketel has heard of them! They’re probably Black Golems made of Dark Super Alloy Heavy Armor!”
“What did you say? Isn’t that Northmanea’s strongest magical golem unit?”
Liena also raised her voice, seemingly shaken by Nuketel’s words.
—But wait a minute.
That’s right, I shouldn’t rush in situations like this. Haste leads to overestimating the opponent.
I took another careful look at the black figures.
“Yikes! General Baldo! We have no chance of winning with such a small unit!”
“No, both of you, calm down. Take a good look at those black figures. They’re not the strongest unit.”
Liena and Nuketel squint to take a closer look at the enemy.
“Um, Baldo-sama, they look like a rather formidable golem unit to me.”
“I agree with Princess Liena; they seem to be tough.”
“No, you’re not looking closely enough. Don’t you see the smoke coming out from their joints?”
“Ah, indeed…”
“See? They’re malfunctioning junk.”
“What? What do you mean!?”
Hmm, observing makes it quite evident. When our magical golem, Sera, had issues, it emitted smoke.
Even a furnace will start to smoke when it’s not functioning well. In other words, those black figures are malfunctioning and unfit for the front lines.
“Think about it. Why must they move such a powerful unit through a back route? It would make more sense to place them in the front to deal a decisive blow to the enemy.”
“Eh, ah… Baldo-sama, is that so?”
“Exactly; due to their lack of maintenance, they’re only useful for diversion tactics through back routes. There’s no need to be overly scared. Let’s quickly deal with them and head for the main enemy force.”
“Is, is that so? Um, wait, I’m starting to get confused…”
Liena holds her head, troubled. Well, they do look tough, but they’re just malfunctioning units.
Knowing that—
“Alright! I’ll be back in a bit.”
“Wha—wait, Baldo-sama, you’re going?!”
“Ah! General Baldo! Why are you charging in alone? Do you have a death wish?”
“All units, wait for my signal!”
Saying that, I sprinted towards the golem unit at full speed.
“The number is… around 20, good!”
As I ran, I infused myself with [Fighting Spirit].
Power surged through my body, and I quickly closed the distance to the golems.
I drew my sword, targeting one golem, and raised it high.
Then, as I ran past—
“One Strike, Two Cuts! Sei!”
Caught off guard, the golem had no time to defend. It was cleanly split from the head down, crumbling to the ground with a resounding thud.
“One down…”
Without losing speed, I kicked off the ground and launched my blade towards the next golem.
“Whoa—Captain! We’re under attack! Someone just slashed a Black Golem!”
“Slashed a Black Golem? Impossible!”
“No, it’s true! Our Dark Super Alloy Heavy Armor Black Golems are being split in half one after another!”
“What’s going on? Is Natol using some powerful magical weapon?”
“No! It’s an older man! He’s slashing them with a sword, yelling, ‘Sei! Sei!’ as he goes!”
“Oh my God, he is cutting them down with a sword! Is that guy insane?!”
“Captain! Already, five units are incapacitated! The old man is still going, yelling ‘Sei!’ in an incomprehensible chant!”
“Dammit… Not here. Our strongest golem unit was supposed to flank the Natol army…”
—Hmm, as I thought. These things are no match!
If these were well-maintained golems, Alesia might have been able to handle them, but I wouldn’t stand a chance.
But…
“Even an old man like me is more than enough for malfunctioning golems!”
While maintaining my [Fighting Spirit], I slash through the golems.
Their movements are slow, making them easy targets.
“Captain! Another five have been taken down!”
“Damn it! Surround the older man with the remaining golems! Prepare to fire the magical golem cannon! We’ll turn him to ash with a blast as powerful as advanced magic!”
The golems lumber closer to encircle me, their mouths opening wide.
A humming noise emanates as the light starts leaking from the golems’ mouths.
“Come on, this…”
Ah, their magical power, their source of energy, is leaking. They’re entirely malfunctioning. Who brings such units to the battlefield? They’re nothing but a hindrance.
Light beams shoot out of the golems’ mouths, leaking magic.
I grip my sword tightly and—
“One Strike, Two Cuts!!”
“Sei! Sei! Sei! Sei! Sei!”
My slashes cleave through all of the golems’ beams.
Magic attacks are powerful because they combine complex incantations with magical energy. So, dealing with mere leaks of magical power is no problem.
“Captain! The old man is cutting through the magical golem cannon!”
“What the hell is that old man cutting?! Is anything fair game?!”
“The old man is slashing through the golems again! We won’t have time to reload the Magic Golem Cannons!”
“What… what is he?”
Zuun!
Having sliced the last golem in half, I gaze at the soldiers behind them.
“These golems had no business being on a battlefield.”
“Heck! I don’t even understand what you’re saying! You single-handedly wiped out our strongest Black Golem unit from Northmanea! You’re a demon! An old man demon! Re-retreat~~!”
The man who seemed to be the commander was saying things that made no sense as he and his soldiers fled.

“Alright. Let’s resume the march. We’ve dawdled long enough.”
Having dealt with the malfunctioning golems, I return to my troops.
The main forces of Natol and the enemy might already be engaged in battle. We must move quickly to fulfill our original mission of disrupting the enemy’s rear lines.
Huh…?
Liena and Nuketel are staring at me with wide eyes.
“What’s up? You both look like you’ve seen a ghost. Could it be a restroom issue? Nuketel can probably find a spot easily, but it’s not that simple for Liena, right?”
“Huh? Huh? Didn’t Baldo-sama go ‘Sei! Sei!’ and slash through those golems?”
“Heck! You wiped out the Black Golems equipped with black super alloy, the magical weapons! Who is this person!?”
Seems like it’s not about needing a restroom. Gave me a little scare there.
“Ah, those were as I expected—just a showpiece unit. No real challenge at all. Let’s focus on resuming our march.”
“What!? Are you kidding? Weren’t they supposed to be an elite unit? Huh? Baldo-sama, are you even listening?”
“General Baldo~ Wow~ he’s just marching ahead like nothing happened~”
We need to hurry. The primary fight might have already started.
My disciple Alesia is battling in much harsher conditions than I am. I can at least deal with some puppets.
If I can be of even slight help, that would be good.
