What Kind Of Partner Will My Niece Marry In The Future? - V1 Chapter 2.1 - Video Editing
Chapter 02 Video Editing.
The work of video editing can be summed up in one word, but the process varies depending on the project, media, and the editor.
Whether it’s a TV broadcast or a movie, a music or a promotional video, or even YouTube videos, and etc.
I’ve been involved in a variety of projects in my career, but recently I’ve been taking on jobs as a YouTube video editor for some experience.
If I were to make this my main goal, I’d have formed a team and focused on sales as a way to make more money, but I prefer to work by myself, so I haven’t considered it yet.
Currently, I can deliver about eight projects a week, at a good price, but if you have the speed and skill to handle that amount of work, you can make enough money that you don’t have to count anymore.
|| “──Oi. All confirmed! Thanks a lot, Yuji!”
Today, I had just finished a project for one of my clients, Shun Kasuga, aka Sugashun, a top YouTube star.
In these two years of working together, I’ve gotten used to his easygoing attitude, which I usually hear from the video conferencing apps.
|| “Yuji, you’re so reliable! You work fast, and your performance is just as I desired. Could it be that we got separated from birth?”
“What do you mean, separated from birth? Like twins or something.”
|| “You don’t get it! It feels as if the other me is working there! Look, here’s the Tequila you made exactly as I imagined.”
Umu, I don’t understand. Especially the last one, what is that?
Is this how the thought process of the top YouTuber, who is raking up a huge fortune at the age of twenty-three, works?
I wonder if an ordinary person can ever catch up with him.
“So you meant to say, my directing and editing has a similar mindset to you, Shun?”
|| “Probably so!”
Shun laughed it off as if to say I shouldn’t mind it.
|| “But to be honest there are a lot of similarities. Like how come you used this font here? Or, why didn’t you put any effects on this scene? And the brakes, it didn’t fit, right? I can’t help but admire your attention to details.”
“Well, I guess I understand what you’re saying. I don’t think any editor can do this without thinking. In my case, I think a little care and attention can make a video much better.”
|| “Yes, you’re right! I also care a lot about the details. It’s all for the audience, I prioritize having it easy to watch rather than having fun.”
Given the tone of his voice, I can’t deny that he is a bit of a sucker for life.
I admit that he has a high income and a lot of courtesy to back it up.
He makes his videos in a way that puts the viewer first. That’s what I like about him.
|| “Guess I don’t have to tell you all these Yuji, you already know all that stuff.”
“You’re overestimating me. Even though I’ve been working on this for a long time, I’ve still been editing based on minimal guidelines and have been studying your style for a while.”
|| “That’s what makes you a god, Yuji! You know me so well that it feels as if you even know there’s a mole on my butt.”
“I have no interest in knowing that fact, enough with it.”
But, yeah, I was getting bored of this trend for a while.
Because there’s no proper way to edit YouTube videos.
However, certainly notions can be derived from analytics and other sources.
How lengthy should a clip be?
How much background music and sound effects should be added to a scene?
The question is whether you can pay attention to each of these points.
That’s an essential skill for editing videos, and I’m just carefully applying each with care.
|| “Well, that’s why. Rather than tossing it to a third party, I’d appreciate it if you continue to work with me, Yuji.”
“Okay. I still have time this coming week, so if you have any files, feel free to toss them to me.”
|| “Sure! I’ll make sure to toss them to you. That’s a relief.”
“Relief, but why?”
|| “Oh, let’s start with the usual chit-chat.”
This sudden change of subject is not new to me. After a quick conversation to confirm the work, we usually spend about ten minutes chatting.
This time is very important.
It’s during these chats that I learn about the content that the client is looking for, the channel that they are running, and what trends are going on in the world that I haven’t been able to keep up with.
|| “There’s a channel that’s seen a huge increase in subscribers views in the past six months. It’s a channel that uploads a bunch of short films.”
“Huh. But that’s not unusual. There are many channels like that…”
|| “That’s right. They’re not as good as me, but I can smell that it’s going to be successful. And what’s interesting is that a very short drama they uploaded recently got a million views overnight.”
As the number of newcomers has spiked in recent years, it is said that it has become difficult for even the top YouTube users to get 100,000 views, let alone for those who are not so well-known. Of course, it depends on the project, the thumbnails, and the time to upload.
Nevertheless, for such a channel to get a million views in a short period of time is a wonderful feat worthy of the title “rising star”.
|| “I used to think that it gained popularity through a shoutout, but when I looked at the content, it became crystal clear as to why it’s so popular.”
“By shoutout? That’s an ideal strategy for the management to have it spread on YouTube.”
While I was answering, I had the feeling that this was not a topic that Shun was after.
He is not the kind of guy who would go out of his way to a topic that is ‘normal’ in his sense.
|| “So, the problem is, I have no idea who’s the one behind that channel, because there’s nothing in the credits as well.”
“Aren’t they posting short films? The actor could be the owner.”
|| “The actors change almost every time. Most likely they use unsuccessful actors. And the owner might be the cameraman or…”
“Yeah, channels can also be run by an organization. If that’s the case, it’s an organization with enough funds to change the actors every time.”
|| “So I’m assuming it’s a group of professionals from the film industry. Looking at the quality, script, filming techniques, the sound, the editing, and all other elements, everything is beyond the scope of normal Youtubers. But they’re putting it into a format that won’t raise an issue on YouTube.”
“You mean like a powerful organization from overseas running amok in the domestic league?”
|| “That’s why the YouTubers are like ‘interesting’. And the YouTubers in the lower tier are in a festival of screaming.”
“A festival of screaming, you say…”
I brushed it off, because it was a strange thing to say, or rather, it gave me an unpleasant image.
