- Chapter 8: Conclusion (Jacqueline's POV)
With a thud, I felt a strong jolt.
Just as I finished declaring my ceasefire, it seemed Wito had kicked the wheel of my wheelchair. Given that I had exposed entirely my back to him, I had expected him to strangle me. But he missed the mark.
Although he caught me off guard, I thought he might go for my weak point next. However, he aimed yet another strike at my wheelchair’s wheel.
“How much do you think I rely on reviving?! Targeting my means of mobility first is so devious! Devious!”
Even as I verbally lashed out, he looked sad and continued kicking the wheelchair. He was not getting into the spirit of things. His face showed that he genuinely didn’t want to kill anyone.
“‘Cloth of Gold,’ ‘Ecliture of Rage,’ ‘Heaven’s Favored Rakwiphe,’ ‘Tomato Soup,’ ‘Grilled Bonito with Herbs.'”
I recited a simple incantation for fire magic. A ball of fire immediately enveloped Wito.
“But, Wito, I’ll be killed if I don’t kill. Yes, I’ve already killed ten people.”
I hoped my words would diminish his guilt and spur him into action.
Moreover… After confirming that Wito had been completely burned to ashes, I murmured to myself.
“It’s hard for me when you do that.”
“Please, spare me. I’ve never killed anyone. I hate killing and being killed.” I recalled those words from Wito, which overlapped with my past self. Well, back then, I was the one invading the dungeon and doing the killing.
I mustn’t get sentimental now. He’d rendered my means of transportation useless.
“You did it, huh… This is going to be a long battle.”
While I had no magic to repair the wheelchair, I could at least levitate it slightly. I considered abandoning the wheelchair but didn’t fancy floating around with my immobile legs dragging behind me. So, I decided to fly while seated in the wheelchair.
From then on, like in other dungeons, I kept awaiting Wito’s naked kamikaze attacks, blasting him away with high-powered magic each time. He probably hoped to drain my magical energy. It might be wise to lie in wait using my horns, but he was relentless. Sure, my magic power was being depleted, but it was a breeze mentally.
Come to think of it, I was intrigued by something that resembled an accessory embedded in his chest. It doesn’t seem like anything other than cursed equipment would be embedded inside one’s body…
“However, the allocation of his stats isn’t perfect. He’s probably using DP for attacks, but shouldn’t he allocate more to magic defense? Why hasn’t he done so already? Does he not have much room to maneuver?”
There’s a suspicious odor, but he doesn’t seem to be revealing any secret strategies. While I can keep using fire magic as is, I might lose if I get too cocky and exhaust myself. Maybe it’s time to play another card.
When Wito-sama approached, I activated a different magic than before.
“He who bathes in pig oil. The one who carries a child and crosses the river. To all, the mire of heated joy.”
Sleep magic. This not-so-popular spell is a very effective measure against dungeons that rely on the Dungeon Master’s privilege of instant revival. It’s also one of my specialties.
Every dungeon has its weaknesses… and strategies to conquer it. For instance, many novice Dungeon Masters mistakenly believe that filling a corridor with insurmountable traps will stop adventurers. However, dungeon explorers can quickly disarm traps and effortlessly defeat such designs. Similarly, if a Dungeon Master overly relies on zombie attacks, spells of mental corruption can easily break through.
Most of the remaining dungeons employ traps, wave attacks by the Dungeon Master, and monsters, all combined. Relying solely on one method is bound to be countered by a single technique, which means that even with my level of skills, I can conquer a dungeon that doesn’t place any monsters at all.
“But, did he spend his DP on self-enhancement? However, if attacked by multiple monsters, solely strengthening oneself seems risky. Perhaps it’s best to assume he stored up to 500DP without overextending the dungeon.”
If you deposit 500DP, as long as the dungeon entrance is closed, you won’t die, and no spell can allow entry into a closed dungeon.
“I should’ve surveilled a bit more before entering.”
Considering the level of this Dungeon Master, Wito-sama probably isn’t a potential ally. He seemed like such a kind person, though…
“If I can’t even land a blow on you, I doubt I’d last another year. At the very least, I should kill you in your sleep… Just kidding.”
It seemed I had reached the top floor. There stood a door with a gentle ambiance crafted from wood. Was it a living space? There seemed to be no hidden tricks up to the end. Thinking this, I opened the door.
“What is this place?”
I may have let out a gasp of surprise for the first time during a dungeon conquest. Firstly, entering such a fancy room after the exterior had been so plain was surprising. But what startled me most was the immediate formation of a barrier at the entrance as soon as I stepped in.
“A boss room?”
The main feature of a boss room is simple: neither can leave until one perishes. All this while, the design of the dungeon was to prevent entry. Suddenly, it aimed to avoid an exit, which caught me off guard. But the surprises didn’t stop there.
“A unique monster?”
Unique monsters… They transform into particular forms upon ranking up and meeting certain conditions. Inside the room stood a white zombie, a creature I had never seen before.
Its entire body was as white as ash, lacking a face, but there seemed to be stitches resembling a sewed-up mouth. Surprisingly, the zombie wore a black dress and moved in a very human-like manner. It was about the average height of a woman, but its body was so slender compared to its chest size that it felt unbalanced, almost as if it could break upon touch.
Despite my confusion, the zombie acted as if following a script. Just when I thought it was reaching out its arm to me, the arm tore off and flew towards me.
“…!”
It exploded just as I thought I had successfully dodged the flying limb. Such an event was utterly unexpected… The flying arm itself was incredible. Who would imagine that the flesh would scatter without any apparent cause?
However, of course, the explosion wasn’t without purpose. I immediately noticed unfamiliar dark red spots forming on my skin. Although I didn’t recognize the symptoms, I quickly realized it was some infection.
“Scorpion. Your tail resembles the shining white celestial king, Nathaniel. Scorpion, your pincers resemble the horns of the bull god, Abaiti. Grant me mercy, cauterize my wounds.”
I quickly chanted a spell to counteract the poison. When I looked, the zombie’s hand was regenerating at an alarming rate, and it was already preparing to launch its other hand. Isn’t this thing overly aggressive?!
I was certain. If the detoxification were delayed, I’d die.
“I’m sorry! It doesn’t seem like playtime anymore!”
I finally resorted to my last measure. It’s a tactic I didn’t want to use when conquering a dungeon because it feels unfairly advantageous.
Monsters have rankings from G to A, but items also range from G to A. Whether for monsters or items, the difference in rank is absolute; a higher-ranked entity is almost certain to win. Just possessing an item that is one level higher is said to guarantee overwhelming victory.
… The main reason major new dungeons aren’t being created recently is this. Every country possesses at least one A-ranked item. If a government indeed faced a crisis, it could handle any dungeon. And so, I retrieved my cherished A-ranked item, the “Chalice of Denibaji,” from beneath my wheelchair.
There’s no need for chants. A chalice is something you raise.
Once I raised it, the white zombie fell asleep. The Chalice of Denibaji has the effect of inducing a powerful, wide-ranging, unlimited hypnosis. Its effect is so potent that one could proceed directly to the core room if activated in an average dungeon.
Once I confirmed the zombie was asleep, I regained my composure. But what was this monster? It appeared undead, but I’ve never heard of a beast whose limbs fly off…
At that moment, I heard a heavy thud behind me. Instantly, a blade was swung down at me. Reacting swiftly, I used a concealed dagger to sever its neck.
“Are you a non-combatant? A mechanical monster hiding, I see.”
The Chalice of Denibaji is ineffective on creatures like the mechanical ones, which fundamentally do not sleep. This monster seemed unique, too, but thankfully, it wasn’t built for combat. Its surprise attack felt like a first-timer’s effort; even the dungeon master could’ve made a better surprise attack.
Then, remaining wary of lurking mechanical monsters, I surveyed my surroundings. I found monsters hiding everywhere. If I were to conquer this usually, it would be quite a challenge; they seemed prepared for group combat.
And what surprised me most was that all of them were unique monsters. Simply considering probabilities, this was impossible. There was some trick involved.
“You passed. I’ve finally found you.”
I entered the core room and finally took a breather. Threatening my life and forcing me to use the “Chalice of Denibaji” meant this dungeon had power far surpassing any mid-tier jail. I touched the core as I heard the sound of intruding into the core room.
“I’ll be taking this. Quite an impressive dungeon you had. Unique monsters and a brave dungeon master. I promise not to treat it poorly.”
Just as I claimed my victory, it happened.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t want to kill you. But if the core breaks, everyone dies. I have to protect them.”
From the core, Wito emerged, clutching a knife with a look of terror so genuine it made me want to vomit. He stabbed it into my left chest. My mind raced with questions.
Wito, who should’ve been asleep, respawned. Why? Did a wild monster conveniently come in? Impossible. The timing was too perfect. After a few seconds, I understood.
“You had them kill you.”
Had he ordered his subordinates to kill him beforehand? As a measure against mental corruption or binding?
“Tell me one last thing. How did you know the exact moment I would touch the core? I saw no messenger monsters on my way to the core room.”
Perhaps because of my calm questioning, Wito seemed even more disoriented.
“…I had a slime monster stay inside me. When the core room alarm activated, it was instructed to kill me.”
I see. Searching through history and geography, perhaps only Wito would employ such a strategy that disregarded his life. It’s a precise pass. After all, a nameless dungeon master managed to pierce my heart.
“But it’s a pity. If you had stabbed my lower half, you might have succeeded.”
I tore off one of my jackets to show him. Seeing the blouse underneath, Wito’s face twisted in shock. There wasn’t a drop of blood on my blouse.
To begin with, Wito’s assumptions were flawed. He always mentioned not wanting to kill anyone or having never killed, but I never once said I was human. Jacqueline Spoonbender is a monster with a human lower half and a zombie upper half.
“Wito. You caught me off guard at the end just as you intended but in this game of deception… I still win. Now, you must be tired after today. I apologize, but please rest for a bit.”
Saying that I activated the sleep spell once again. Holding the slumbering Wito in my arms, I had successfully conquered the dungeon with unique monsters.
Spoiler: It’ll be explained later, but basically, Yuto didn’t want to tell his real name so he said that his name is Wito
